BOOK 2: A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

SUMMARY

In A Court of Mist and Fury, Feyre Archeron grapples with the trauma of her time Under the Mountain and her new life as a High Fae. Though she’s finally free from Amarantha’s grasp, she is haunted by the guilt of what she had to do to survive. As she prepares to marry Tamlin, Feyre finds herself suffocating in the Spring Court, where Tamlin's overprotectiveness only worsens her inner turmoil.

Things take a turn when Rhysand, the enigmatic High Lord of the Night Court, calls in the bargain Feyre made with him Under the Mountain—spending one week each month at his court. At first, Feyre resents Rhysand for pulling her away from Tamlin, but gradually, she finds solace and healing in the Night Court, a place far more complex and beautiful than she ever imagined.

As Feyre spends more time with Rhysand and his inner circle, she begins to see that he is not the villain she once thought. Rhysand helps her rediscover her strength and self-worth, teaching her to wield her new powers and preparing her for a looming war with the King of Hybern, who seeks to reclaim the human lands. Along the way, Feyre uncovers shocking truths about Tamlin’s behavior and realizes that their relationship is not what it once seemed.

Meanwhile, Feyre’s feelings for Rhysand deepen, and she learns of his sacrifices and the true nature of their bond: Rhys is her mate, a revelation that forces her to confront her emotions and choices.

In the climactic battle, Feyre, now a force to be reckoned with, helps secure a critical victory, but the war is far from over. She makes a daring sacrifice to infiltrate the Spring Court, pretending to reconcile with Tamlin, in order to protect her new family and prepare for the battles ahead.

Introduction to A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
Maybe I’d always been broken and dark inside.
Feyre's journey begins with a haunting introspection on the weight of her actions. The horrors of what she endured Under the Mountain linger, particularly the guilt and shame of the lives she took to save Tamlin and Prythian. Her reflection on the blood-soaked choices she made to free them all reveals her shattered spirit. She recalls standing before Amarantha, forced to wield an ash dagger to kill innocent Fae—an act that left her broken, a murderer of innocents and the reluctant savior of a land.
Now, as she wrestles with her trauma and the part of her that was lost in those violent moments, Feyre questions whether the darkness she feels has always been inside her or if it was Amarantha's cruelty that pushed her into the abyss. The vivid image of blood splattered across her hands, boots, and soul introduces readers to the psychological scars that will shape Feyre’s path in A Court of Mist and Fury. She is not just a survivor but someone irrevocably changed by the things she did—and the person she had to become.
As she picks up another dagger to face her own reflection in a faerie she is about to slay, Feyre is trapped in an internal battle of identity and morality, setting the tone for the heart-wrenching, emotional journey ahead. The nightmare of her time Under the Mountain marks the beginning of her struggle to reclaim herself in the aftermath of trauma.
This introduction encapsulates the emotional and mental turmoil that drives the second book, setting the stage for Feyre’s quest for healing, redemption, and power in a world where the lines between hero and monster are blurred.

PART 1 THE HOUSE OF BEASTS

CHAPTER 1 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

Three months after escaping Amarantha’s clutches Under the Mountain, Feyre is still haunted by the horrors of what she endured and the innocent lives she took to save Tamlin and Prythian. Nightmares plague her, and she often wakes in a panic, sick with guilt and trauma. Now immortal, Feyre struggles to adjust to her new Fae body, dealing with its unnatural strength and heightened senses, which make her feel disconnected from her humanity. Her heart, still fragile and full of human emotions, feels darker and heavier, a painful reminder of the cost of her survival.

Feyre's relationship with Tamlin is also strained. Though they sleep beside each other, the unspoken toll of their experiences keeps them distant. Tamlin is similarly haunted by his own nightmares, but they refuse to talk about it, choosing instead to pretend that everything is fine, letting the weight of their shared trauma fester in silence. Feyre feels the weight of her deal with Rhysand—the bargain that grants him one week with her every month, though she has yet to hear from him since Amarantha's defeat. The tattoo on her arm, a symbol of that agreement, serves as a constant reminder of the debt she owes to the High Lord of the Night Court.

As Feyre lies in bed, wrapped in darkness and her own swirling thoughts, she longs for the numbness of a heartless existence, as the trauma continues to chip away at her soul. Despite being free and beside the one she loves, Feyre feels broken beyond repair, uncertain if even eternity will be enough to heal the wounds she carries.

CHAPTER 2 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

Feyre wants to help the local village rebuild after the devastation caused by Amarantha. However, Tamlin refuses to let her go, claiming it’s still too dangerous, as they are hunting down Amarantha’s remaining beasts. He reminds her that Naga slipped past the wards, and he needs to focus on ensuring her safety. Despite her newfound High Fae strength, Tamlin is adamant that Feyre shouldn’t leave the estate without protection, as it would put unnecessary worry on him.

Feyre, growing frustrated by her lack of freedom, reflects on how distant she and Tamlin have become. Since Amarantha’s defeat, Feyre has been preparing for her wedding, but the preparations feel empty to her. Though Ianthe, a High Priestess, assists with the plans and helps Feyre navigate courtly life, Feyre struggles with the emotional and psychological aftermath of the trials she endured. She tries to push down her inner turmoil, but it lingers.

Ianthe, who sees Feyre as an important symbol of hope and stability, offers guidance. The wedding is approaching, and Feyre is overwhelmed with the pressures of her role as Tamlin's bride and what that will mean for her in Prythian.

Tamlin reassures her of his love, but Feyre feels increasingly trapped in her role, stifled by the expectations placed on her. Even though she outwardly agrees to stay safe, she internally battles with the trauma of her past and the cage of her future.

That night, Feyre and Tamlin share an intimate moment, but even then, Feyre’s internal conflict looms. Despite their physical closeness, Feyre feels the growing distance between them. She questions her place in Tamlin’s world and what her future as his wife will truly look like. When Tamlin mentions there’s no such thing as a High Lady, it underscores Feyre’s fear that she will forever be relegated to a supporting role, with no real power or control over her fate.

CHAPTER 3 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

Tamlin's guilt over Feyre's restrictions weighs heavily, but he's still absent the next day. Instead, Lucien offers to take Feyre to inspect the village nearby, which she hasn't visited in over a month. As they prepare to leave, Feyre confronts Lucien about lying regarding a recent naga attack. Lucien admits he technically didn't lie but explains that Tamlin ordered him not to tell her, as Tamlin is trying to protect her.

Lucien reminds Feyre that Tamlin is under immense pressure and is terrified of losing her. He stresses that while Feyre once had freedom, things have changed after Amarantha's defeat. Now that Tamlin is High Lord and they're rebuilding Prythian, he must ensure her safety, especially given how vulnerable Tamlin is when it comes to Feyre. Lucien insists that they need to follow rules and rankings to maintain stability.

As they ride toward the village, Feyre feels the strain of being cooped up and longs for the freedom she once had. Lucien reminds her that being Tamlin's wife comes with expectations, and that she will have to uphold traditions, including overseeing the Tithe, where the people pay Tamlin in exchange for his protection. Failure to pay results in punishment.

Lucien shares a deeply personal story about watching his father murder the female he loved, revealing that the trauma of that experience shapes Tamlin's protective behavior toward Feyre. Tamlin is haunted by the sound of Feyre's neck breaking during her death, and he will not risk losing her again, even if it means keeping secrets.

When they reach the village, Feyre feels like an outsider. Despite her desire to help, the villagers reject her and Lucien's offer, treating Feyre with reverence but distance. Lucien explains that the villagers see her as a reminder of the trauma they endured, having been locked in camps under Amarantha's reign for fifty years.

The weight of immortality begins to suffocate Feyre, as she realizes that despite her efforts, she cannot help the people the way she wants to. The vastness of her unending existence looms before her, leaving her feeling overwhelmed and swallowed by the emptiness within.

CHAPTER 4 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

As Feyre navigates the final days leading up to her wedding, more guests arrive, overwhelming her with endless dinners, luncheons, and parties. The constant smiling and pretending take their toll on her, and she begins to long for the wedding to be over so she can retreat into solitude. Tamlin tells her these gatherings are to celebrate their union and to introduce her to his court, but Feyre feels increasingly isolated despite his reassurances.

At the festivities, Ianthe stays close to Feyre, offering support as they endure conversations with Tamlin's friends and sentinels. Though Feyre outwardly smiles, she is haunted by memories of Under the Mountain and the trials she faced, particularly the encounter with the Middengard Wyrm. Some of the guests even bring up her past, calling her the Savior of Prythian, but to Feyre, the title feels hollow. The weight of being seen as both savior and jester is suffocating, and she longs for freedom from the expectations placed on her.

As the day of the wedding arrives, Feyre is dressed in a monstrosity of a gown chosen by Ianthe. The ceremony is set to take place at sundown, with three hundred guests watching her every move. Tamlin waits at the end of the aisle, but as Feyre approaches, she is overwhelmed by the memories of blood and the lives she took. The red petals on the ground remind her of the blood she spilled, and she begins to feel trapped by the vow she is about to make, shackling herself to Tamlin forever.

Just as she is about to collapse under the weight of it all, desperate for someone to help her, thunder cracks behind her. The crowd screams as darkness erupts, and Rhysand appears, casually straightening his jacket. He greets her with a chilling, “Hello, Feyre darling,” signaling that her deal with him is far from forgotten.

CHAPTER 5 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

As Rhysand interrupts Feyre's wedding, chaos erupts. Tamlin and his sentries are immediately on guard, but Rhys effortlessly stops them with a mere gesture. He taunts Tamlin, stating he’s come to collect on the bargain Feyre made with him Under the Mountain. As tension fills the air, Ianthe disappears, along with most of the guests, leaving Feyre feeling abandoned.

Rhys insists on taking Feyre with him, despite Tamlin's protests and offers to negotiate. Feyre is in shock, unable to react as Rhys claims her. Though Tamlin warns Rhys not to harm her, he does nothing to stop him from taking her. As darkness envelops them, Feyre is transported to the Night Court, clinging to Rhys with both hatred and fear.

Upon arriving, Feyre is stunned by the beauty of the Night Court, with its moonstone pillars, endless mountains, and starry skies. Rhys reveals that they are at his private residence, far from any of the horrors she imagines about his court. The place is serene, and Rhys is calm as he mocks her for her wedding dress and her predicament.

Feyre, emotionally and physically exhausted, lashes out, hurling her shoe at him. To her surprise, Rhys is momentarily caught off guard but quickly regains his composure. Despite the tension between them, Rhys insists that she’s a guest, not a prisoner, and tells her to clean up and rest. Feyre is left in a room fit for royalty, feeling completely overwhelmed and trapped by her circumstances.

Later, as Feyre tries to come to terms with everything, Rhysand informs her that for the rest of the week, he expects her to learn how to read, hinting that there is more he wants from her than just fulfilling the bargain.

CHAPTER 6 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

Rhysand insists that Feyre needs to learn how to read and shield, mocking the expectations of her becoming a High Lord's wife. Feyre, however, refuses to let him teach her, clinging to her independence. Despite her resistance, Rhys reminds her of her resurrection, hinting that she might possess powers transferred from the seven High Lords. Feyre denies it, but Rhys finds it interesting.

Their conversation is interrupted when Morrigan, Rhys’s cousin, enters. Mor, as she’s called, is vibrant and playful, immediately befriending Feyre. Mor’s arrival lightens the tense mood, especially with her teasing of Rhys, much to Feyre’s amusement.

Later, Rhys begins Feyre's lessons in reading and shielding. Feyre struggles, but with his persistent encouragement, she manages to read a sentence, though it turns out to be Rhys flirting with her through the text: “You look absolutely delicious today, Feyre.” When Rhys delves into her mind to demonstrate how easily she could be controlled, Feyre learns to build a mental shield, blocking him out. Rhys praises her progress but warns her that she should be afraid of what could happen if she doesn’t master these skills.

The lesson continues with Feyre trying to balance reading and shielding, but her mind is exhausted. Rhys, pushing her to get better, hints that he finds her progress promising. As the lesson ends, Rhys takes her to a tower chamber where a map of Prythian and Hybern is laid out. When Feyre questions the blankness of the Night Court, Rhys steers the conversation towards something more ominous—war. He tells her that war is coming, and her human family, living close to the wall, could be in danger.

CHAPTER 7 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

The word war hits Feyre like a shock, as Rhys tells her about the King of Hybern's plans to reclaim the world south of the wall. She begs him not to invade the mortal lands, but Rhys reassures her that Prythian will be the first target, not the human territories. The King of Hybern plans to remove Prythian swiftly and bring down the wall, using stealth and trickery.

Feyre is horrified by the news and feels the weight of what’s coming, as Rhys explains that Prythian is vulnerable with untested High Lords and broken courts. He tells her that he needs her help because of her skills—how she captured the Suriel and Middengard Wyrm—but also because of the powers she might have gained from the seven High Lords when she was resurrected.

Rhys suggests that Feyre might have abilities akin to those of a High Lady, and that they could be useful in the coming war. He insists that Tamlin isn’t her keeper and challenges her to not be a pawn or a trophy. Rhys offers her a choice: either she can master her powers and become a weapon, or she can stand by and watch Hybern destroy everything, including the mortal lands.

The chapter shifts to Feyre recounting the week she spends at Rhys's court, practicing reading, shielding, and contemplating her choices. Her lessons consist of writing ridiculous sentences praising Rhys—but she persists in raising and lowering her mental shields, growing stronger in controlling her mind.

At the end of the week, Rhys and Mor discuss an attack on a temple in Cesere, which leaves Feyre with even more to process. When Rhys flies off to handle the situation, Feyre demands to be taken home. Rhys winnows her back to Tamlin's estate, where she is reunited with Tamlin. He is desperate to ensure she's unharmed but quickly shifts to interrogating her about the Night Court and Rhys.

Tamlin refuses to believe there will be a war, dismissing Rhys's warnings. Despite Feyre's desire to train and use her powers against Hybern, Tamlin insists she doesn’t need to train, believing he can protect her. The chapter ends with Feyre feeling the weight of her choices and the conflict between being Tamlin's subject and Rhys's offer of power.

CHAPTER 8 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

Feyre feels increasingly isolated as Tamlin returns briefly before being called to the border. With little explanation, he leaves her with sentries guarding her constantly, and she spends the week alone, enduring nightmares and vomiting in the night. Ianthe visits but doesn't mention the massacre of her sisters in the north, offering no real comfort or conversation.

The Tithe, an ancient system of taxes, arrives. Tamlin insists Feyre observe, not participate. From the dais beside him, Feyre watches as emissaries from the Spring Court arrive with their payments—gold, jewels, livestock, and goods. After hours of watching, she grows restless and detached from the endless gratitude and offerings.

A water-wraith appears, a creature from a nearby pond, pleading with Tamlin for mercy. She claims there are no fish left in the lake, and she has nothing to pay for the Tithe. Tamlin coldly refuses her request for mercy, stating the rules of the Tithe are absolute, giving her three days to pay or face double the amount next time.

Feyre, troubled by Tamlin's harshness, asks him to reconsider, but he dismisses her concerns, citing that exceptions would weaken his rule. After the wraith leaves, Feyre follows her outside, feeling empathy for the creature’s situation. She offers the wraith her own jewelry, the ruby bracelet, gold necklace, and diamond earrings, asking nothing in return. The wraith, surprised by Feyre's kindness, accepts and vows that she and her sisters will never forget this.

At dinner, tension explodes between Tamlin and Feyre. He confronts her about giving away her jewelry, accusing her of undermining the laws of the Spring Court and making him look weak. Feyre, furious, defends her actions, pointing out that she refuses to let others starve while they sit on a house full of gold. Their argument becomes heated, with Tamlin slamming the table in anger and Feyre refusing to back down, citing her past experience of hunger and her empathy for the water-wraith.

During the argument, something strange happens to Feyre—she briefly sees through Lucien's mind, sliding into his mental walls and experiencing his thoughts and emotions. Horrified at this violation, she excuses herself abruptly, unsure of the power she has tapped into. She notices burned handprints on the table, a sign that something within her is changing—gifts that likely came from the High Lords who saved her.

The chapter ends with Feyre storming out, unsettled by her newfound abilities and the growing distance between her and Tamlin.

CHAPTER 9 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

Feyre spends time in her room after the confrontation at dinner, reflecting on whether she truly caused the burn marks on the table or slid into Lucien's mind. She’s confused and unsure about her new abilities.

As Alis helps her prepare for bed, they talk about the water-wraith incident. Alis reveals that the water-wraith will likely still starve because of her insatiable hunger, but now she will be indebted to Feyre for life. Alis also warns that word of Feyre's kindness will spread, a fact that makes Feyre nervous.

Later that night, Feyre finds Tamlin in his study, and the two attempt to apologize for their earlier argument. They reconcile, and Tamlin offers Feyre a present: a traveling painting kit filled with brushes, paints, and supplies. However, instead of joy, the kit triggers painful memories for Feyre, reminding her of the time she killed Amarantha's faerie servant and the trauma she still carries.

Though she tries to be grateful, Feyre feels suffocated by her situation and the constant protection imposed by Tamlin. She asks him to let her help him, to allow her some freedom and to stop being surrounded by guards. Tamlin refuses, insisting that Feyre has already given enough and doesn't need to help any further.

The conversation escalates when Tamlin, speaking with soft menace, implies that he’s trying to protect her because his own family was killed despite their power. Feyre, feeling trapped and smothered, tells him that she’s drowning under the weight of his overprotectiveness.

In a moment of extreme frustration and anger, Tamlin’s power explodes uncontrollably. The windows shatter, the furniture breaks, and the painting kit—the symbol of his gift—explodes into dust. Feyre is left reeling, both emotionally and physically, as the chapter ends on a tense, devastating note.

CHAPTER 10 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

Feyre is in the wreckage of Tamlin’s study after his outburst of power, realizing that she had unconsciously shielded herself with an invisible wall of air. Tamlin is devastated, filled with guilt and grief. He apologizes repeatedly, expressing how he feels like he’s drowning in rage and fear, asking Feyre to give him more time to improve.

Despite the destruction around them, Feyre chooses to comfort him, although internally, she acknowledges how drained she feels, as if she has nothing left to give. Tamlin remains apologetic for days, trying to make it up to her through intimacy and affection. He reduces the number of guards around her, but it’s clear he’s still monitoring her.

Feyre spends her time practicing reading, writing, and her mental shields, and while she yearns to have a real conversation with Tamlin, he remains distant. Nightmares plague her, and she’s relieved when Tamlin isn’t around to witness her breaking down. She, too, notices how Tamlin is haunted by his own fears and responsibilities, often unable to find rest.

One morning, Feyre wakes up to the sound of Rhysand arguing with Tamlin. Realizing that the time for her monthly visit to the Night Court has arrived, Feyre wraps herself in a blanket and joins them in the hallway. Rhys, always observant, comments on her appearance, causing tension with Tamlin.

Tamlin demands that Rhysand leave, telling him that Feyre will go to him when she’s ready. Rhys brushes off his threat and mockingly suggests Tamlin should have his wards checked, as Rhys had entered the house too easily.

When Rhys reaches out to take Feyre’s hand, Tamlin intervenes again, offering Rhysand anything he wants in exchange for ending the bargain between him and Feyre. Feyre is shocked, but Rhys coldly refuses, saying that he already has everything he wants. He takes Feyre's hand, and with a swirl of black wind, they vanish into the Night Court.

CHAPTER 11 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

Rhysand brings Feyre to the Night Court, immediately noticing her deteriorated condition. He offers her breakfast and shows genuine concern for her well-being, but Feyre is emotionally exhausted, having lost weight and feeling trapped. Rhys, while lighthearted in his teasing, makes it clear that he is deeply worried. When he asks her about a recent spike of fear through their bond, Feyre dismisses it as just an argument and insists it’s none of his business.

Their conversation turns tense as Rhys presses her about the Spring Court, mentioning the silence he feels through their bond. Feyre, still reluctant to open up, doesn’t want to discuss it. Rhys suggests that she looks haunted by grief, guilt, and rage, and he challenges her to push him out of her mind when he senses her emotions. Feyre refuses, deflecting the conversation and asking where Mor is, trying to avoid the deeper issues.

The topic shifts to Rhysand’s offer to work together, which Feyre still refuses, saying that being either a weapon or pawn feels the same, regardless of who is wielding her. Rhys becomes frustrated, trying to explain that he genuinely needs her help to prevent another war and avoid the horrors he endured Under the Mountain. But Feyre remains firm, refusing to engage further.

After breakfast, Rhysand assigns her reading exercises to keep her mind sharp, but Feyre is still distant, going through the motions of her life without much energy. She avoids him for days, retreating into books and solitude. When Rhys returns after a week, he continues to press her, bringing her food and trying to draw her out of her emotional isolation. However, Feyre becomes increasingly frustrated, leading to a confrontation where she hurls a book at him in a rare display of temper.

Rhysand sees this as progress, encouraging her to continue showing her emotions and not let Amarantha win by breaking her spirit. Yet, Feyre pulls back again, feeling hollow and exhausted. Despite the tension between them, Rhysand keeps trying to help, but Feyre is caught in a free fall, overwhelmed by the weight of everything she’s endured.

The next morning, Tamlin is waiting for Feyre back in the Spring Court, visibly furious with Rhys. Rhys simply advises her to “fight it” before vanishing. Feyre knows that after this, her freedom will be further restricted. Tamlin is determined to protect her at all costs and vows to find a way to end the bargain with Rhysand. However, his solution is to increase the sentries and control around her, tightening his grip on her life once again.

CHAPTER 12 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

After returning to the Spring Court, Feyre finds herself increasingly isolated and unable to escape her feelings of being trapped. Tamlin and Lucien leave to handle a mysterious threat at the western border, and Ianthe is sent to keep her company, though Feyre feels stifled by her presence. The lords and ladies of the Spring Court are dismissed, leaving the manor in silence. This silence becomes oppressive for Feyre, who is already struggling with her trauma and feelings of entrapment.

Feyre continues to burn through books, trying to stave off despair. When Tamlin returns eight days later, Feyre is kept in the dark about whatever new threat is looming, further heightening her sense of powerlessness. During a brief encounter with Lucien, Feyre's newly developing powers surface when her nails grow into claws. Though Lucien notices and promises to ask Tamlin about allowing her to train, Feyre already knows what Tamlin’s answer will be.

Later, overhearing a conversation between Tamlin, Lucien, and Ianthe, Feyre learns they are deeply concerned about the gifts she’s inherited from the High Lords and the danger she now poses to other courts. Ianthe even suggests that Feyre could be stolen for breeding purposes, causing Feyre to feel more like an object of power than a person. Lucien pleads with Tamlin to allow Feyre to train and defend herself, but Tamlin refuses, insisting on keeping her powers hidden. He also insists that Rhysand could become a major threat.

Feyre becomes increasingly desperate to leave the manor, to do something meaningful, but Tamlin continues to deny her any involvement in the affairs of the court. When he prepares to leave again to handle the situation at the western border, Feyre begs to go with him, expressing her frustration at always being kept behind. Tamlin, however, refuses and dismisses her pleas, citing that her untrained abilities make her a liability.

As Tamlin leaves, Feyre discovers that he has trapped her inside the manor with a magical barrier. She is unable to leave the house, sparking a panic attack as memories of being imprisoned Under the Mountain overwhelm her. In her panic, Feyre tries to summon her powers to escape but finds herself powerless and consumed by a crushing sense of darkness.

Just as she’s on the verge of breaking, Mor arrives, sent by Rhysand to rescue her. She shatters the shield surrounding the house and carries Feyre out, assuring her that she is free. Despite Mor’s words, Feyre struggles to process the fact that she’s been rescued and not imprisoned again. The chapter ends with Mor handing Feyre over to Rhysand, who envelops her in darkness and comfort, putting her to sleep to ease her panic.

CHAPTER 13 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

Feyre wakes up to find herself in Rhysand's palace in the Night Court, surrounded by open sky and snow-capped mountains. Rhys is watching her, his face showing unusual signs of relief but also lingering rage. He tells her that during her escape from Tamlin's manor, she wrapped herself in darkness, which terrified the sentries, although she didn’t harm anyone.

Rhys explains that Mor had to follow protocol to avoid causing a political incident with Tamlin. Rhys broke the shield keeping Feyre trapped, but Mor had to enter Tamlin's lands and physically carry Feyre across the border to avoid an internal war between the courts.

Feyre, still processing the fact that Tamlin had locked her up, admits to Rhys that she has nowhere else to go. Rhys tells her she can stay in the Night Court as long as she wants, offering her work if she chooses to stay. Feyre acknowledges that she can’t return to Tamlin right away and says she needs time to figure things out.

Rhys offers Feyre a mug of tea, and as she drinks, they discuss the powers she has received from the High Lords. Rhys encourages her to take time to rest and figure out her powers, but Feyre is desperate to avoid being alone with her thoughts. She asks Rhys to take her with him on his next trip.

Rhys warns her that if she comes with him, she will have to keep secrets and lie to anyone outside of his court about what she sees. Feyre agrees, saying she won’t tell anyone, not even Tamlin. Pleased with her decision, Rhys tells her they will leave for Velaris, the City of Starlight.

After hurriedly getting ready, Feyre joins Rhys, and they winnow to a townhouse in Velaris. Feyre takes in the warm, lived-in atmosphere of the townhouse, noting its cozy and cherished feel. It's clear that Velaris, a city untouched by Amarantha’s destruction, still stands, and Feyre is about to experience this hidden sanctuary within Prythian.

PART 2 THE HOUSE OF WIND

CHAPTER 14 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

Feyre wakes up in Rhysand's townhouse in Velaris, the City of Starlight. The house is smaller, quieter, and far more personal than the grand estates she has known. It's revealed that this is Rhysand's private home for him and his family—a place where he can relax away from the official business of the Night Court.

While Feyre is still processing her new surroundings, two figures appear at the front door, knocking loudly and bickering with each other. Feyre hears male voices, one cocky and the other cold, referring to each other with playful insults. Rhys tells Feyre she can either meet these two males—members of his Inner Circle—or rest upstairs in private. Feyre chooses to retreat upstairs.

As Feyre climbs the stairs, she hears a new female voice joining the conversation downstairs, calling the males “pathetic” and demanding to speak with Rhys. This playful banter gives Feyre a glimpse of the camaraderie shared between Rhysand and his Inner Circle, hinting at a close, informal relationship that contrasts with the cold, formal environment of Tamlin’s court.

Upstairs, Nuala and Cerridwen, the twins from the Night Court, greet Feyre and lead her to a warm, comfortable bedroom that overlooks a winter-kissed garden. Feyre takes note of how human the room feels—unlike the grand and imposing rooms in Tamlin’s manor. While preparing for bed, Feyre finally asks about Velaris and how it managed to survive Amarantha’s reign.

The twins are hesitant to answer, saying that Rhysand's power and devotion to his people were key in protecting the city, but they prefer to let Rhys tell the full story himself. Feyre is left with many questions about the city's safety and how it remained untouched while the rest of the world was ravaged.

Before leaving her to rest, the twins offer to close the curtains, but Feyre, still haunted by her confinement in Tamlin’s court, insists they remain open. The thought of being trapped in darkness is too much for her to bear.

Alone in the soft bed, Feyre reflects on how different Velaris feels from the Spring Court and wonders if not returning to Tamlin might be a punishment for what he did to her. As exhaustion takes over, sleep claims her swiftly and deeply.

CHAPTER 15 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

Feyre wakes up after four hours of rest, disoriented but no longer feeling the overwhelming exhaustion that had plagued her. After dressing in warmer clothes, Feyre joins Rhysand outside, where the open front door reveals a glimpse of the peaceful city of Velaris. The city is beautiful, full of life, light, and laughter, unlike anything Feyre had seen in Prythian before. The Sidra River winds through the streets, and in the distance, Feyre sees red mountains looming like silent protectors of the city. The sea glimmers beyond, and everything about Velaris is untouched by the horrors Amarantha had unleashed on the rest of Prythian.

As Feyre takes in the sights, her growing resentment surfaces. She questions how Rhysand managed to keep this city hidden and safe while the rest of Prythian suffered under Amarantha's rule. Rhys explains that Velaris remained a secret, thanks to the work of his ruthless ancestors who had warded the city and kept it hidden. He also admits that the decision to protect Velaris came with difficult choices, but Feyre remains frustrated that no one else had been offered refuge here.

Rhys takes Feyre through the bustling markets of Velaris, including the Palace of Thread and Jewels and the Palace of Bone and Salt, where clothes, jewelry, food, and spices are sold. Despite the vibrancy of the city and its contented citizens, Feyre feels distant and disconnected. She’s still grappling with the weight of what she’s endured and the stark contrast between Velaris and the rest of the world that had suffered under Amarantha.

Rhys eventually takes Feyre to the Rainbow of Velaris, the artists' quarter of the city, known for its galleries, potters, and sculptors. However, being in the presence of so much creativity and beauty makes Feyre realize how deadened she feels inside. Once, she might have delighted in these sights, but now, she can only feel the emptiness and the anger at how her world had been shattered while Velaris thrived. Overwhelmed, she asks to return, admitting she is tired.

As they prepare for dinner at the House of Wind, Rhys informs Feyre that she will meet his Inner Circle, including Cassian, Azriel, and Amren. Feyre is nervous, especially since she has already heard about Amren’s formidable reputation. Rhys reassures her, explaining that his Inner Circle operates differently from most courts, with Amren being his second-in-command and Mor his third. Amren, according to Rhys, is far older and more dangerous than anyone else Feyre has ever met.

Before flying to the House of Wind, Rhys insists on carrying Feyre. She is reluctant but allows him to do so. As they fly over the city, Rhys shares a personal memory of sneaking out to fly as a child and sometimes being joined by his Illyrian mother, who would fly with him until dawn. This tender moment gives Feyre a glimpse into Rhysand’s softer, more vulnerable side.

When they land at the House of Wind, Feyre is struck by the scale and beauty of Velaris from above, with its twinkling lights and the vast sea beyond. Rhys suggests they exchange one thought each. Feyre reluctantly admits that she feels like she was once a hopeless, lonely person, who might have fallen in love with the first person who showed her safety and kindness—likely Tamlin. She questions whether that relationship worked for who she was then but no longer works for who she is now.

Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Cassian and Azriel, who grin in amusement, setting the stage for Feyre’s introduction to Rhysand's closest allies.

CHAPTER 16 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

Feyre is introduced to two of Rhysand's Inner Circle, Cassian and Azriel, as they stand outside the House of Wind. Cassian is large, muscular, and has a rough-hewn demeanor, making jokes to put Feyre at ease, while Azriel is quieter and more mysterious, his scarred hands a testament to his past. Cassian immediately tries to charm Feyre with his bold humor, and it’s clear he’s the more playful of the two. However, Feyre quickly realizes that Azriel, Rhys’s spymaster, is someone to be cautious of due to his reserved nature and the dark shadows that seem to cling to him.

Inside the House of Wind, the group gathers in the dining room, and Mor and Amren join them. Amren is introduced as a small, delicate woman who is far from ordinary. Despite appearing High Fae, there’s something distinctly otherworldly about her, especially in her silver, swirling eyes, hinting at the dangerous power she holds. Feyre is unnerved by her presence, realizing that Amren, like her, was once something else and has been trapped in a new body.

The conversation at dinner quickly turns to the shared past of the Inner Circle, particularly the Illyrian origins of Cassian and Azriel. Both are bastards and warriors, with Cassian commanding Rhys’s armies and Azriel being a shadowsinger, capable of hearing and sensing things others cannot. They reveal that the Illyrians are a brutal warrior race, treating their females harshly, often clipping their wings to keep them from flying. Rhys’s mother was Illyrian, and her story is a heartbreaking one—she tried to escape the cruelty of her people but was only saved from a terrible fate by Rhys’s father, who recognized her as his mate and took her away to the Night Court.

Through Cassian's recounting of their past, Feyre learns that Rhys, Cassian, and Azriel bonded over their shared outcast status in the Illyrian war camps. They were stronger and faster than their peers, and their unique powers set them apart. Despite the Illyrians’ harshness, the three formed an unbreakable bond, becoming brothers in all but blood. Their history of fighting in the War against Hybern is touched upon, and Cassian reveals that Rhys's father had kept them separated during the War to prevent them from uniting against him.

Amid the stories of their past, Feyre is introduced to the concept of the Siphons, the stones worn by Cassian and Azriel that help them focus their raw, powerful Illyrian magic into something more controlled and precise. This allows them to use their destructive magic in a more refined manner during battle.

As the dinner progresses, Mor shares her own story of being born into the Court of Nightmares but finding her way out, while Amren’s vague history remains a mystery. When the conversation turns to Feyre, she shares her background of growing up in poverty, taking on the role of the family provider after her father’s downfall, and teaching herself to hunt. This earns her the respect of the group, especially Cassian, who offers to train her in fighting.

The tone of the evening shifts as Rhysand reveals troubling news: the King of Hybern is planning to start a war and resurrect Jurian, the ancient warrior whose soul had been trapped in Amarantha's ring. This revelation shocks the group, and Rhys expresses his intent to find out how the king plans to accomplish this. Amren suggests seeking answers from the Bone Carver, a mysterious and dangerous being imprisoned in the Prison. Despite the risks, Feyre volunteers to accompany Rhys to visit the Bone Carver, realizing that fear no longer holds the same power over her.

CHAPTER 17 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 17, the tension builds as Feyre processes the looming threat of Jurian's resurrection and the potential consequences it holds. After a long dinner filled with discussions of the plan, Feyre is flown back to the townhouse by Rhys, who, despite their earlier conversations about bonding and nightmares, remains somewhat distant. The conversation turns heavier as Feyre questions the cost of keeping Velaris hidden during Amarantha’s reign, and Rhys confesses to the terrible choices he made to protect his people, including becoming Amarantha’s whore. He reveals how he used his limited power to shield Velaris, creating a web of forgetfulness in the minds of his people to keep the city a secret. Rhys's love for his people and the sacrifice he made to protect them leaves Feyre with a deeper understanding of his past.

After Rhys flies away, leaving her to contemplate his confession, Feyre falls into a nightmare about Amarantha, haunted by the trauma of her time Under the Mountain. In her dream, Amarantha tortures her, reinforcing her fears and self-loathing. Feyre wakes screaming and finds Rhys by her side, trying to calm her down. He shares his own nightmare, revealing his guilt over not being able to save Cassian or Azriel in his dreams, hinting at the deep bond between the members of his Inner Circle.

Feyre’s nightmare triggers her new powers, specifically the flames of the Autumn Court, which she struggles to control. Rhys helps her extinguish the flames, showing his understanding of the weight they both carry. The connection between them deepens further as they acknowledge the traumas they’ve endured and their shared guilt.

The next morning, Rhys and Feyre travel to a remote island where the Prison lies. The Prison, embedded in a mountain, holds the most dangerous and ancient criminals and creatures of Prythian. However, the idea of going underground into a stone prison triggers Feyre’s PTSD, reminding her of being trapped Under the Mountain. Despite Rhys's gentle encouragement, Feyre is unable to go inside, paralyzed by fear and trauma. True to his word, Rhys doesn’t press her and winnows them back to Velaris, allowing Feyre to retreat to her bed for the remainder of the day, deeply shaken.

CHAPTER 18 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 18, Feyre wakes up to find Amren standing at the foot of her bed, offering her an amulet with a warning: it will allow her to escape from the Prison, but Feyre must return it or face consequences. The amulet holds significant weight as it was what allowed Amren to leave the Prison herself. Despite her lingering fears, Feyre accepts it, knowing it will help her in their task to visit the Bone Carver.

Feyre and Rhys hike to the Prison, a long and grueling journey. During the climb, they have a deep conversation, touching on the traumatic pasts of Azriel, Mor, and Amren. Rhys explains how Azriel was burned by his brothers, Mor’s position as his Third, and hints at Amren’s terrifying power, implying that unleashing her true form would be catastrophic.

When they arrive at the Prison, Feyre’s fear and trauma from being trapped Under the Mountain resurface, but Rhys helps her push through. They descend into the darkness, surrounded by ancient and dangerous creatures, with Rhys explaining the eternal nature of their imprisonment.

Inside, they finally meet the Bone Carver, a mysterious being who appears as a young boy to Feyre but can take different forms to different people. He asks her a question she dreads answering: where did she go when she died? Feyre describes the darkness, the bond that tethered her to Rhys, and her journey back from death. The Bone Carver is fascinated by her story and, in return, tells them that to resurrect someone from the dead requires the Cauldron, a powerful object from ancient times.

The Bone Carver explains that the Cauldron was broken long ago, with its three feet hidden in temples. The recent raids on those temples indicate that someone is trying to reunite the pieces—likely the King of Hybern—to restore its full power. The Book of Breathings, which was split between the High Fae and the human queens, holds the spells needed to nullify the Cauldron's power. Both halves of the book must be reunited to prevent the Cauldron from shattering the wall that protects the human lands.

The Bone Carver confirms that Hybern is the one responsible for the temple attacks and hints at the king’s desire to use the Cauldron to resurrect Jurian. Feyre also reveals that during Amarantha’s trials, she had been so devastated that she had considered taking her own life after breaking the curse.

As they leave, Feyre reflects on the encounter, shaken by the Bone Carver’s knowledge of her darkest moments and Rhys’s reaction to her confessions. Rhys reveals that the Bone Carver appeared to him as Jurian, a haunting reminder of what they are up against.

CHAPTER 19 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 19, Feyre and Rhys return to the town house after their visit to the Bone Carver. Inside, they find Cassian, Mor, and Azriel waiting, tense and eager to hear what happened. As Rhys explains the Carver’s information regarding the Cauldron and its connection to the Book of Breathings, Feyre struggles to process the new weight on her shoulders. The conversation turns to strategy, with Rhys outlining the dangerous mission ahead to retrieve the halves of the Book of Breathings—one from the Summer Court and one from the mortal queens.

Rhys reveals that he believes Feyre’s newfound abilities, gifted from all the High Lords, will allow her to track and retrieve the Book’s pieces. However, before they make any moves on the Summer Court, Rhys wants to test Feyre’s skills. He plans to take her to the Weaver, a dangerous ancient being who hoards objects of great value, to see if Feyre can retrieve something Rhys had once lost.

The group debates the dangers of this plan, but Rhys insists that Feyre’s ability needs to be tested before they face the greater challenge of retrieving the Book. Despite her exhaustion and fear, Feyre agrees to the mission.

Rhys also presents Feyre with a new role: Emissary to the Night Court for the human realm, a position that has not existed for five hundred years. This title would allow her to act as a bridge between the humans and the fae, particularly with the looming threat of Hybern and the potential shattering of the wall. Though the idea of involving her sisters, Nesta and Elain, worries her, Feyre agrees to help.

The next morning, Rhys wakes Feyre early to prepare for their trip to the Weaver. He gives her a belt of knives and helps her dress in fighting leathers, warning her that the mission will require stealth and precision. Rhys explains that while the Weaver is blind, she possesses other deadly senses, and Feyre must not touch anything but the object she is sent to retrieve. If she fails, the consequences could be dire.

As Rhys kneels before her, preparing her for the mission, the tension between them simmers, and Feyre realizes the danger she is about to face. Rhys, ever the strategist, reminds her that while he cannot interfere directly with the Weaver due to ancient laws, Feyre is still unknown to the creature, giving them an advantage. With the weight of her new role as both thief and emissary, Feyre heads into the unknown, ready to face whatever challenges await her.

CHAPTER 20 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 20, Feyre and Rhysand winnow into an ancient, eerie wood on the eastern edge of the neutral territory that separates the North and South of Prythian. This forest, older and more aware than any place Feyre has ever been, belongs to creatures that answer to no High Lord. At its center lies the domain of the Weaver of the Wood, a powerful and dangerous creature at the top of the food chain in this lawless territory.

Rhys explains that even Amarantha had not dared to disturb these beings, a testament to their fearsome reputation. Feyre is sent into the Weaver's lair to retrieve an object belonging to Rhys—her test to determine if she can use her powers to find magical items, a necessary ability for their mission to find the Book of Breathings.

As they trek through the woods, Rhys makes offhand remarks, teasing Feyre about Cassian and hinting at his own flirtation. His remarks irritate Feyre, but she recognizes that he is trying to distract her from the terrifying task ahead. Feyre’s fear and tension build as they approach a seemingly ordinary, quaint cottage—home to the Weaver, who is singing a chilling, ancient song inside.

Feyre, on edge, cautiously makes her way into the cottage. The interior is a hoarder's dream, filled with random objects: books, jewelry, dead birds, and odd trinkets. The Weaver, a beautiful but unsettling figure, sits at a spinning wheel, weaving thread from some unknown material. Feyre realizes the horror of the situation—the Weaver is spinning from something far more sinister than wool.

Carefully, Feyre searches for the object Rhys sent her to retrieve, following a faint tug of magic. After what feels like an eternity of tension and unease, Feyre spots a ring on a high shelf. It emanates a sense of Rhysand, its blue stone gleaming with a six-pointed star. This is the item she came for.

But just as she quietly takes the ring, the Weaver stops singing.

CHAPTER 21 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 21, Feyre faces the Weaver and her darkest fears. After successfully retrieving the ring, she is caught as the Weaver becomes aware of her presence, sealing the door and windows. The fear that crashes over Feyre is overwhelming, reminding her of her helplessness as a human and the terror she had endured Under the Mountain. As the Weaver, with her grotesque and decaying features, approaches, Feyre feels trapped, with no way out but up the chimney.

Desperate, Feyre lights a fire to distract the Weaver, who screams as the flames consume her precious tapestries made from the skins and lives of others. Feyre attempts to escape through the chimney, but gets stuck, panicking as the Weaver climbs after her. In this critical moment, Feyre manages to regain control of herself, remembering her strength and her gifts. She loosens a brick and throws it at the Weaver’s face, causing her to fall, allowing Feyre to escape.

Feyre scrambles through the forest, running for her life until she finally encounters Rhysand, who waits nonchalantly in a tree. Angered that he didn’t help her, she lashes out, but he calmly winnows them back to Velaris. There, in the war room, she vomits from the stress and disgust of the experience, only to have Amren clean it up instantly with magic. Cassian and Amren are stunned at her ordeal, and Feyre angrily confronts Rhys for putting her through the test. She realizes it wasn’t just about retrieving the ring—it was about mastering her panic and proving her ability to control her powers under duress.

After a brief conversation, Rhys reveals that the ring Feyre retrieved was his mother's, given to the Weaver for safekeeping so he wouldn't waste it as a young man. Feyre, exhausted from the ordeal, demands training to learn how to fight, feeling helpless and weak in the situation. Cassian agrees to train her, warning her that it won’t be easy.

Rhys then offers to train her in controlling her magical gifts as well, but Feyre is hesitant, knowing that their sessions would be intense. Rhys, however, insists, making it part of her "work requirements." He taunts her to try and break into his mental shields again, which Feyre attempts but fails, only to find herself drawn into a memory Rhys shares with her.

The memory is of Ianthe, naked and in his bed, attempting to seduce him while he coldly rejects her advances. Ianthe's manipulative and predatory behavior infuriates Rhys, who threatens her before finally throwing her out. The memory reveals the darker side of Ianthe, who had been pursuing not only power but also an inappropriate relationship with Rhys—and likely others, such as Lucien. Feyre is disturbed by what she sees and realizes how dangerous Ianthe could be.

After seeing this memory, Feyre reflects on the fact that Amarantha had done the very thing to Rhys that he had despised in Ianthe, using him and his body for her own ends. It highlights the deep scars Rhys bears from his time under Amarantha's rule and his willingness to endure such horrors to protect his friends.

Feyre, shaken by both the memory and her own experience with the Weaver, retreats to a hot bath, reflecting on how far she has come from being the "party-planning wife" that Ianthe had wanted her to be.

CHAPTER 22 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 22, preparations are made for Feyre, Rhysand, Cassian, and Azriel’s journey to the mortal realm, where Feyre will reunite with her sisters. Mor, lounging on Feyre's bed, discusses the restrictive roles of women in both human and faerie societies. Feyre reflects on how wealthier women in the mortal lands often have their freedoms limited, while Mor shares her personal experience growing up in the oppressive Court of Nightmares.

Mor reveals that because of her immense power, she was treated as a commodity, with her family eagerly trying to marry her off to the highest bidder. She recounts how her power fully awakened when she was seventeen, but instead of protecting her, her family and society saw her as an asset to be used. Mor doesn’t go into full detail, leaving the rest of her story for another time. However, she tells Feyre that she won’t be joining the trip to the mortal lands, as she might not be able to control her emotions when dealing with mortals who subjugate women. Though Rhys tried to convince her to come, Cassian understood why she couldn’t, given their history together.

Afterward, Feyre expresses her desire for her sisters to meet Mor one day, hoping they could learn from her strength in overcoming hardship while remaining warm and kind. Mor, touched by Feyre’s words, reminds her not to let the hard days win, offering Feyre some much-needed encouragement.

When the time comes to travel to the mortal realm, Feyre chooses to fly with Azriel instead of Rhysand. She feels uneasy around Rhys due to the lingering intimacy of his touch from the day before. Azriel, who is quiet and reserved, accepts without complaint. Rhysand winnows them all to the coast, where they prepare to fly through a tear in the magic of the wall separating the human and faerie realms.

During the flight, Feyre feels the strange and powerful presence of the wall, sensing the magic trying to prevent their passage but ultimately failing. As they break through the barrier, Feyre and Azriel have a brief conversation about identity. Azriel confesses that even after centuries of living, he’s still unsure of his place in the world, a sentiment that resonates with Feyre as she struggles to figure out where she belongs now that she’s fae.

Once they cross into the human lands, the cold and barren landscape greets them, reminding Feyre of her former home. Despite the differences between the fae and human realms, she reflects on the complexity of where she stands—caught between two worlds, unsure of her place in either.

CHAPTER 23 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 23, Feyre returns to her family's estate after a year, now transformed into a faerie. She stands at the doorstep of the mansion, grappling with the emotions of seeing her sisters again while concealing Rhys, Cassian, and Azriel under a glamour. The estate is as beautiful as she remembered, but the weight of her new reality as a fae makes her feel like an outsider in the human world. She feels too powerful and changed to belong in this place anymore.

Mrs. Laurent, the housekeeper, answers the door and is immediately wary, sensing something different about Feyre. Elain, Feyre’s younger sister, enters the scene, and upon seeing Feyre, is overcome with emotion. Despite Elain’s tears, Mrs. Laurent remains protective and cautious. However, when Nesta, Feyre’s eldest sister, appears at the top of the stairs, her response is less emotional. Nesta stares at Feyre, as if seeing a ghost.

As Feyre steps inside, she feels the house is untouched by the time that has passed, while she has irrevocably changed. She settles into the sitting room, feeling like a wraith or a wolf let loose in the delicate human space. Her sisters, now seated before her, wait for her explanation. Feyre begins by asking about their father, who is away on business, then dives into the story of her transformation—her time Under the Mountain, her death, and eventual rebirth as a fae.

Elain is shocked and rattled, visibly shaken by Feyre’s story, but Nesta remains stern and cold. When Feyre explains the impending threat of Hybern and the need to hold secret meetings with the mortal queens at their estate, Nesta adamantly refuses. She fears the danger it will bring to their standing in the human world, especially given Elain’s engagement to Graysen, the son of a lord who hunts faeries.

Elain tries to reason with Nesta, reminding her that if they don’t help Feyre, even Graysen's well-fortified estate won't protect them from the fae. Elain’s gentle yet firm plea convinces Nesta, though reluctantly. After an intense exchange, Nesta agrees to send the servants away and let Feyre conduct the meetings in secret, with Elain stepping up to handle the arrangements.

In a private moment, Feyre asks Nesta if Elain's fiancé, Graysen, is a good man. Nesta’s response reveals her concern: she doesn’t like Graysen’s father, who is more interested in Elain’s wealth and his hatred of faeries than in her well-being. Despite this, Nesta concedes that Graysen is kind and that Elain is deeply in love with him.

Nesta then shifts the conversation to Feyre’s romantic life, asking about her High Lord and why things didn’t work out. Feyre admits that Tamlin’s overwhelming desire to protect her had become suffocating, stemming from the trauma he experienced Under the Mountain. She acknowledges that Tamlin was broken by those events, much like herself, and couldn’t let go of the need to shield her from everything, including her own freedom.

The chapter ends with Feyre asking if Nesta would like to meet her new court, leaving a sense of anticipation about the upcoming interactions between Nesta and the Night Court members.

CHAPTER 24 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 24, Feyre and her companions—Rhys, Cassian, and Azriel—are finally introduced to her sisters, Nesta and Elain. After Elain skillfully persuades the staff to leave the house, Feyre answers a knock at the door and lets in the three males, who enter the grand mansion with a quiet but imposing presence.

The chapter emphasizes the contrast between Feyre's mortal family home and the untamed, powerful energy of the fae males who accompany her. Rhys, Cassian, and Azriel all seem larger than life in the human setting, and Feyre is acutely aware of the strangeness she brings with her now as part of their world. Inside the house, Feyre’s sisters react with wariness and fear, particularly at the sight of the Illyrians' wings.

When the group moves to the dining room for dinner, the atmosphere is tense. Nesta, as expected, takes a defensive and combative stance, making sharp remarks, especially about Feyre’s ability to eat normal food now that she is fae. Cassian doesn’t hold back, challenging Nesta for letting Feyre fend for herself in the woods all those years. The tension between Nesta and Cassian is palpable, and Nesta's sharp personality provokes Cassian, but he seems intrigued rather than put off.

Elain, on the other hand, is much softer in her demeanor and clearly frightened but trying to navigate the situation as best as she can. She engages in a gentler conversation with Azriel about flying, revealing her curiosity and trying to smooth over the tension at the table. Despite her fear, she makes an effort to show civility and gratitude for Feyre's sacrifices.

Rhysand, although calm and composed, confesses to Feyre later that sitting through the dinner was difficult for him. He had a hard time seeing her sisters in light of their past, knowing how young Feyre had been and how they hadn’t protected her when she had been forced to go out hunting for their survival.

After the dinner, the group discusses the letter Feyre must write to the mortal queens to request a meeting. The chapter ends with Feyre and Rhys sharing a room for the night. They talk about their growing responsibilities and challenges, Rhys revealing that he is paying Feyre a wage for her work and has set up a bank account for her in Velaris. The conversation turns more personal, touching on Feyre's birthday, which she reveals is the Winter Solstice. Rhys is quietly surprised and reflects on how Feyre has lived her life, even under her family's neglect. There's a brief but light-hearted moment as they joke about the budding tension between Nesta and Cassian, both betting that Nesta would come out on top in any confrontation.

CHAPTER 25 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 25, Feyre ventures into a snow-laden forest to begin training with Rhysand, but not in physical combat—this time, it's to practice using her fae powers. As they walk, Rhys casually remarks about the cold, suggesting they visit the Illyrian Steppes, a warmer and more interesting location compared to their current surroundings. Feyre reminds him that she’s still unfamiliar with much of the geography of Prythian, having never seen a full map.

To address her frustration, Rhys finally reveals a map, pointing out the location of the Illyrian Steppes, just south of the Northern Isles. Feyre notes that on a previous occasion, Rhys had shown her a blank map to prevent her from revealing the cities’ locations to Tamlin or Ianthe. Pushing the thought of her past aside, Feyre focuses on the task at hand.

Rhys sets a candle on the snowy ground and challenges Feyre to light it, douse it, and dry the wick, all without touching it. Feyre expresses her doubt, but Rhys insists she try, suggesting she also explore her other abilities, such as shape-shifting. Feyre refuses to engage with the idea of shape-shifting and instead decides to concentrate on elemental magic.

Finding Rhys's presence distracting, Feyre asks him to leave, admitting she can't focus with him nearby. After some teasing banter, Rhys agrees to give her space, reminding her to send a mental shout through the bond if she accomplishes anything before breakfast. Feyre, left alone, struggles for an hour, trying to summon her powers. Despite her frustration and anger, particularly towards Ianthe, Feyre is unable to conjure any fire, water, or air.

Taking a break, she rummages through her pack and finds food and a note from Rhys teasing her about her progress. They exchange playful letters, with Rhys flirting shamelessly, much to Feyre's amusement. She writes back, calling him a shameless flirt, and waits for his reply.

But before the next note arrives, Feyre is violently grabbed from behind. A hand clamps over her mouth, and she’s lifted off her feet, thrashing in terror. The voice that speaks in her ear is unmistakable—it’s the Attor, the creature from Under the Mountain that haunted her nightmares. The chapter ends with Feyre’s chilling realization that she is in the grip of this nightmare creature once again, and it threatens to snap her neck if she resists.

CHAPTER 26 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 26, Feyre is ambushed by the Attor, a creature that once served Amarantha and is now working for the King of Hybern. The Attor, who had fled after Amarantha's death, captures Feyre in the mortal lands, intent on taking her for the king. As the Attor threatens her, Feyre desperately tries to think of a way to escape, but before she can act, Rhysand intervenes, shrouding them in darkness and binding the Attor with bands of night.

Rhys begins to question the Attor, who reveals that it was sent to capture Feyre on the king's orders. The Attor doesn’t know why the king wants her, but it does reveal that Hybern’s army is coming soon, and it’s endless, with allies in every territory. As the interrogation continues, Azriel arrives silently and joins them. The tension escalates as Rhys promises to kill the Attor if it attempts to take Feyre again, and Azriel prepares to winnow the creature away for further questioning.

Feyre, shaken by the encounter, questions Rhys, accusing him of using her as bait. Rhys admits it, explaining that he was curious who would try to capture her first and that she had been safe the entire time. Furious, Feyre lashes out at him, blaming herself for forgetting her own strength in her panic, just as she had with the Weaver. Rhys pushes her to confront that fear and frustration, leading to a heated exchange.

In her rage, Feyre attacks Rhys, but he continually winnows away, goading her to try harder. As she chases him through the clearing, Feyre taps into her fae powers, eventually learning to winnow herself, moving like smoke and stars. With her newfound ability, she manages to tackle Rhys into the snow, surprising both him and herself with her success.

This chapter highlights Feyre’s growing powers and her struggles to fully embrace them, as well as the intense and complicated relationship between her and Rhys. It also reveals that the King of Hybern is actively hunting Feyre, setting the stage for the impending conflict.

CHAPTER 27 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 27, Feyre confronts Rhysand after tackling him in the snow, furious that he had used her as bait without telling her. Sprawled on top of him, she snarls at him, demanding that he never use her like a pawn again. Feyre reminds Rhys that he promised to help her become a weapon, not treat her like an expendable piece in a larger game. She threatens to walk away from their arrangement if he ever manipulates her like that again.

Rhys, who had been laughing, immediately stops and, with a grave expression, agrees, recognizing the seriousness of her words. Feyre pushes herself off him, talons retracting, as she demands to be taken back to the chateau, exhausted and emotionally spent. She’s cold and drained from both the physical and emotional confrontation.

Rhys, sensing her distress, apologizes. His usual charm and playfulness are gone, replaced by a rare moment of vulnerability. Despite his apology, Feyre brushes it aside, still angry at him for his actions. When she asks why the King of Hybern wants her, Rhys admits that he doesn't fully know yet, but he is determined to find out. Feyre realizes she had stopped fighting during the encounter with the Attor, and Rhys had pushed her to remember her strength.

Rhys offers his hand to her, not just as a means to help her up, but as a silent gesture of trust and apology. Feyre, however, is still upset and insists they return to the house for breakfast before heading back to Velaris. When Rhys calls Velaris "home," Feyre coldly responds that it isn’t her home, causing a flash of hurt to cross his face before he winnows them back.

The chapter showcases Feyre’s growing independence and demand for respect, while also highlighting the complex dynamic between her and Rhys. Their relationship continues to deepen, but not without tension as Feyre asserts her boundaries and refuses to be used or manipulated, even by someone she is starting to trust.

CHAPTER 28 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 28, the dynamics between Feyre and the members of the Night Court continue to evolve, as do her relationships with her sisters. After a breakfast with Rhysand and Feyre, Azriel and Cassian depart to handle the aftermath of the Attor’s capture, with Cassian and Nesta exchanging a snarky and fiery farewell that only seems to fuel the tension between them.

Feyre and Rhys take Nesta and Elain to the village to send the letter to the mortal queens, using a glamour to keep themselves hidden. Upon their return, Rhysand becomes increasingly preoccupied with learning what the Attor knows, and Feyre insists that she be informed of everything. She makes it clear that she no longer wants to be shielded from the harsh realities of the situation.

Rhys agrees and shows Feyre the interrogation of the Attor through his memories, using a mental connection to share what happened. In the Court of Nightmares, Azriel quickly breaks the Attor, revealing critical information: Hybern’s endless army is gathering, and they plan to use Feyre for reasons still unclear. The Attor confirms that the King of Hybern desires Feyre and that the threat is imminent. Once the Attor reveals everything, Rhys orders its wings to be shredded and the creature to be dumped off the coast of Hybern, sending a message to their enemies.

Following this grim revelation, Feyre continues to reflect on her independence, reinforcing her desire to control her own fate and identity, stating, "I am no one’s pet." She confronts Rhys about the growing tension between the Spring Court and her decision to leave Tamlin, but the conversation doesn’t delve deeply into the topic.

That evening, Amren visits Feyre in her room, and the two have a candid conversation. Feyre learns more about Nuala and Cerridwen, discovering that they are half-wraiths, trained by Azriel as spies. Feyre also returns the amulet Amren gave her when she visited the Prison, only to discover it was a deception—there was no magic in the amulet after all. Amren reveals that she gave it to Feyre so that she’d believe she could escape, a necessary confidence boost for Feyre at the time. The interaction underscores Amren’s wisdom and the Night Court’s tendency to rely on loyalty, cunning, and compassion rather than brute force.

As the chapter closes, Feyre agrees to go out into Velaris with Rhys and the rest of the Night Court, marking a shift in her desire to immerse herself in the life and vibrancy of the city, embracing its freedom and possibilities. Rhys is pleased with this decision, eager to show her the beauty of the city at night and challenge her to enjoy herself in the world beyond her past traumas.

This chapter highlights Feyre’s growing resolve, the deepening complicated emotions between her and Rhysand, and her increasing involvement in the Night Court’s plans. She is no longer content to be shielded from danger but rather wants to face it head-on. Additionally, the subtle humor and warmth of her interactions with Rhys show the slow build of trust and connection between them.

CHAPTER 29 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 29, Feyre and Rhysand spend an evening in Velaris, the City of Starlight, along with Mor, Cassian, Azriel, and Amren. The chapter begins with them leisurely strolling through the lively streets of Velaris, filled with music, laughter, and bustling life. Feyre reflects on the serene normalcy of the city, marveling at the contrast between the peacefulness of Velaris and the looming threats of Hybern. She’s struck by how the people here live without fear, showing their love for their city and rulers, and Feyre begins to appreciate the vibrant, joyful world she had been blind to in her months of numbness and despair.

As they enter a small restaurant by the river, they are welcomed like family, with the owner kissing Rhysand and the others on the cheek, except for Amren, who receives a respectful bow. The night continues with delicious food, laughter, and conversation under the stars, the warmth of the city and the company filling the void in Feyre’s chest. Rhys flirts with the owner as they discuss the rising price of spices due to rumors of Hybern stirring. Feyre begins to feel alive again, and for the first time in a while, she finds herself enjoying the simple pleasures of life.

During the meal, Feyre also notices Amren drinking a cup of spiced blood, a reminder of her mysterious and inhuman nature. When the meal ends, Mor suggests going dancing at a place called Rita’s, and though Feyre’s body protests from the earlier training, she considers joining them. However, Rhys offers to walk Feyre home instead, and she gladly accepts.

As they walk along the river, Rhys shows Feyre his favorite view of the city, the Rainbow of Velaris, a quarter of the city alive with colorful houses glowing in the moonlight. He tells her it was his sister’s favorite view too, sharing a quiet moment of vulnerability about his past. Feyre asks why the truth of Velaris is kept hidden, and Rhys explains the city’s history—how an ancient High Lord sealed it away to protect it and how it remains a hidden sanctuary to this day.

Feyre also learns more about Rhys’s relationships. She questions his connection with Amren, but Rhys clarifies that they are close friends, not lovers. He explains how his power and position make him a target, and how marriage and children would place even more risk on those he cares for. Their conversation touches on deeper aspects of Rhys’s life and the burden of ruling a secretive court that is hated beyond its borders.

As they cross the bridge, Feyre hears a musical performance and realizes it’s the same piece she heard when she was imprisoned Under the Mountain. She confronts Rhys, asking if he was the one who sent the music to her cell. Rhys admits he did, explaining that he did it because she was breaking, and he had no other way to help her. This revelation brings a new level of understanding and gratitude from Feyre toward Rhys for all he has done to save her, not just physically, but emotionally as well.

The chapter ends with a flirty exchange of notes between Feyre and Rhys as Feyre tries to fall asleep. Their banter is light and playful, showing the growing bond between them. However, Feyre dreams not of Rhys but of the Attor, haunted by memories of her encounter with it. Despite the nightmares, she sleeps through the night, a sign of her growing resilience and healing.

CHAPTER 30 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 30, Feyre’s training session with Cassian showcases the physical and emotional challenges she faces as she tries to regain her strength and cope with the trauma from her past. Cassian, usually known for his cocky humor, is intense and focused in the sparring ring, guiding Feyre through basic hand-to-hand combat. However, Feyre struggles with coordination, especially on her left side, showing that despite her hunting skills, her body still has limitations. Cassian critiques her punches and teaches her to hit correctly, emphasizing that the wrong technique could injure her more than her opponent.

Across from them, Rhysand and Azriel spar shirtless, and Feyre observes the beauty and power of their Illyrian physiques—their muscles and wings illuminated by the winter sun. Feyre admires the intricate tattoos that cover their arms, chests, and spines, symbols of luck and glory as Illyrian warriors. She reflects briefly on how her own tattoo may have been Rhysand’s way of wishing her the same during her time with Amarantha.

During a break, Cassian brings up Feyre’s recent decision to write a letter to Tamlin, officially ending their relationship. Feyre’s reaction is sharp and defensive, especially when Cassian pries into her emotional state. Cassian’s attempt to apologize is sincere, showing his empathy and understanding of the difficult decision Feyre had to make.

The conversation triggers a flood of emotions for Feyre, who reflects on how she gave everything for her love with Tamlin—sacrificing herself, killing innocents, and enduring unspeakable horrors. She recalls how Tamlin’s rage, possessiveness, and failure to protect her in critical moments eroded the love she once felt. Her punches become faster and harder, driven by these realizations, until she breaks down in tears. Feyre admits, for the first time out loud, that she killed innocent faeries and wishes it had been her instead.

At that moment, Rhysand steps in, wrapping his wings around her in a protective cocoon of darkness and comfort. He tells her that the guilt will never fully go away but offers a path forward—either let it destroy her or learn to live with it. Rhys then opens up about his own trauma, confessing that he still has nightmares of the moment Amarantha snapped Feyre’s neck and that he is haunted by the death of his mother and sister. The intimacy and vulnerability in their conversation deepen their connection, with Rhys helping Feyre feel seen and understood in a way she hasn’t been before.

After Feyre regains her composure, they attempt to explore her newfound powers again. Rhys encourages Feyre to summon darkness by channeling different kinds of darkness—comforting, frightening, and peaceful. Though Feyre struggles, Rhys demonstrates his own control of darkness, creating a beautiful, starry night around them. This moment of peace contrasts with the chaos of Feyre’s internal struggles, and Rhys promises they will continue working on it together.

The chapter concludes with Feyre requesting Cassian to fly her home instead of Rhys, signaling that while she is growing closer to Rhys, she still values her space and independence. The chapter is filled with emotional depth, personal growth, and moments of levity, with the banter between Feyre and Rhys lightening the tension of the heavier moments.

CHAPTER 31 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 31, four days after her emotional breakdown in the sparring ring, Feyre is continuing her intense training with Cassian atop the House of Wind. The chapter begins with Cassian giving Feyre more combat advice, pushing her to improve her footwork and stance. Amren, lounging nearby and taunting Cassian, provides a sharp contrast to Feyre’s intense physical effort. Despite Cassian’s relentless instructions, Feyre struggles with mastering the techniques, though she notes that she’s made more progress with summoning flame than darkness.

As they train, there’s an underlying tension, especially when Mor arrives and Cassian questions her whereabouts from their night out at Rita’s. Feyre recalls the evening—how she had quietly observed the dynamics between Rhys, who was politely refusing advances, and Azriel, who seemed more relaxed than usual. Cassian’s prying into Mor’s personal life hints at deeper feelings, and Feyre begins to understand the complicated relationship between Cassian, Mor, and Azriel. She notices the protectiveness Cassian shows, not to keep Mor and Azriel apart, but to shield Azriel from potential heartbreak.

When Rhysand arrives, he brings news that they’ve been invited to the Summer Court. This announcement leads to playful and sarcastic exchanges among the group, particularly between Cassian and Amren. Cassian warns Rhys about the dangers of the Summer Court, expressing concern over the potential for betrayal. However, Rhys insists that Amren’s presence will be more effective and that Cassian is needed elsewhere, specifically in the mortal realm.

Rhys’s invitation to Feyre to accompany him and Amren to the Summer Court signifies her deeper involvement in the court's plans, particularly to retrieve the Book of Breathings. Feyre realizes her role in this mission will require her to act as both Feyre Cursebreaker and a thief.

Cassian's concerns about the message this will send to Tamlin, especially after Feyre’s letter, highlights the growing tension between the courts. Rhys, however, is firm in his decision and leaves, prompting Feyre to follow him.

Their interaction turns flirtatious as Rhys teases Feyre about her lingering anger from their last mission and jokes about the notes they exchanged at night. Feyre, feeling more at ease and perhaps beginning to embrace the lighter side of their dynamic, engages in the banter, even as Rhys hints at the underlying tension between them. The chapter ends with Rhys disappearing into shadow, leaving Feyre to reflect on what lies ahead at the Summer Court and the increasingly complex nature of their relationship.

CHAPTER 32 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 32, Feyre, Rhys, and Amren travel to the Summer Court to retrieve the first half of the Book of Breathings. Cassian is left behind, still unable to convince Rhys to let him join, while Azriel is busy with his spy network in the human realm. Mor stays behind to guard Velaris. Upon arriving in Adriata, the castle-city of the Summer Court, Feyre is immediately struck by the beauty of the place—the turquoise sea, the tan stone palace, and the sparkling white and coral-colored buildings. However, there is no time to dwell on the scenery as they are greeted by Tarquin, the High Lord of Summer, and a small group of his court.

Tarquin's demeanor is cool and composed, but Feyre can feel an unspoken tension beneath the surface. Their history from Under the Mountain, where Rhys spared Tarquin, lingers in the air. Feyre senses a strange connection with him, as if a part of her remembers him on a deeper, more instinctive level—likely due to the spark of power she took from him during her transformation.

Rhys introduces Feyre as his Emissary to the Mortal Lands and immediately shifts into his casual yet commanding persona, teasing Feyre and Amren while maintaining his own hidden agenda. Feyre, however, finds herself in the spotlight when Cresseida, the Princess of Adriata and Tarquin's cousin, begins questioning her relationship with Tamlin and the potential political implications of her presence in the Summer Court. Cresseida hints that by law, Feyre still belongs to Tamlin, and any High Lord could be required to return her if Tamlin requested it. This veiled threat is met with cold resolve from both Rhys and Feyre, asserting that Feyre left Tamlin of her own free will.

The tension rises when Varian, Cresseida’s brother and the Prince of Adriata, makes it clear that any disobedience to these laws could risk war, highlighting the delicate balance of power in Prythian. Amren remains poised and dangerous, while Rhys escalates the stakes by promising that if anyone in the Summer Court attempts to send Feyre back to Tamlin, they would pay with their lives.

This chapter builds the underlying tension and sets the tone for the strained relationships between the courts. Feyre realizes how closely she's being watched, not just as Rhys’s emissary but as a potential political weapon, and as a woman who may have left a powerful High Lord. As always, the theme of autonomy is at the forefront, with Feyre reiterating that no one is her master.

In the end, Tarquin tries to ease the tension by inviting them to a party on his pleasure barge, but the unease between the two courts is palpable. Feyre, reflecting Rhys’s cool demeanor, lifts her glass and makes a comment that eases the tension slightly, earning approval from Rhys through their bond.

CHAPTER 33 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 33, the tension between Feyre and Rhysand intensifies, both emotionally and in terms of the mission. They are staying in the Summer Court, where Feyre's task is to retrieve the Book of Breathings without being caught. The chapter opens with Feyre in her luxurious suite, designed in colors of the sea, when Rhys enters. Their banter is laced with tension, particularly as Rhys implies that Feyre should do whatever it takes to accomplish her mission, even seducing Tarquin if necessary. Feyre, ever defiant, challenges Rhys by asking what he would do if she actually did sleep with Tarquin. Rhys’s response, cool and unreadable, suggests that he would let her, emphasizing her freedom.

Rhys’s outward nonchalance about her seducing another High Lord stirs deep emotions within Feyre. They exchange words, touching on the ongoing struggle between her feelings for Tamlin and the growing complexity of her connection with Rhys. Rhys insists that while Tamlin loves her, it was too much, likening it to poison. He leaves Feyre with the lingering thought that love can be destructive.

Later, aboard a pleasure barge that Tarquin has arranged for them, the mood shifts to one of celebration, but Feyre feels the weight of her mission and the underlying political tension. She converses with Tarquin, who reveals more about his court’s treasures and the losses they suffered under Amarantha. Feyre cleverly steers the conversation toward her interest in seeing his collection, and Tarquin offers to show it to her the next day, suggesting that he’s aware of some game at play but willing to let her get close.

As the night continues, Feyre observes Rhysand flirting with Cresseida, Tarquin’s cousin and princess of Adriata. Their closeness stirs unexpected feelings of jealousy in Feyre, though she doesn’t acknowledge it openly. She finds herself unsettled by the situation and the realization that, despite all her recent strength and independence, she is still deeply unhappy—perhaps even lonely.

Feyre’s emotional turmoil is clear as she steps away from the party, needing space and time to process her feelings. She seeks solitude on the deck of the barge, but even in her isolation, she can’t fully escape the emotional weight of her connection to Rhys. When the barge docks, she notices that Rhys and Cresseida are absent, leaving her to wonder what their absence might mean.

CHAPTER 34 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 34, Feyre continues to wrestle with her emotions and sense of duty while navigating her mission in the Summer Court. She wakes up from a nightmare in the middle of the night, her mind swirling with thoughts of her task: retrieving the Book of Breathings to prevent the King of Hybern from destroying the wall and unleashing war on both the mortal and Fae worlds. She reflects on the relationships she’s formed with the members of Rhysand’s court, particularly the bond she shares with Rhys. Feyre tries to rationalize their connection, telling herself that Rhys’s affectionate gestures are just his way of ensuring she doesn't break, as she is a valuable weapon in his arsenal. Despite these thoughts, she can't shake the feelings of loneliness and disappointment that linger.

The next morning, Feyre doesn’t leave her room for breakfast, unable to face the possibility of seeing Rhys with Cresseida after the previous night’s events. Instead, she prepares for her midday meeting with Tarquin, dressing in a seafoam green gown that reflects the Summer Court’s colors. As she heads to meet Tarquin, she runs into Rhys, Amren, and the others, but she barely acknowledges Rhys, shutting him out.

Tarquin takes Feyre on a tour of his court’s treasure room, and Feyre marvels at the wealth around her—gold, jewels, and priceless heirlooms. While she scans the room for any sign of the Book of Breathings, she keeps up her facade of polite conversation, even when Tarquin offers her a necklace as a token of gratitude for what she did Under the Mountain. Despite her growing guilt over her mission to steal from him, Feyre accepts the gift and continues to engage him in conversation, noting his youthful idealism and desire to break down class barriers between High Fae and lesser faeries. Tarquin even hints that he sees the kindness in Feyre and that he would like her as an ally.

Throughout their exchange, Feyre is torn between her duty to retrieve the book and her sympathy for Tarquin, who seems genuinely interested in change. She reflects on her position as a "thief, liar, and manipulator" but presses on, knowing she has no choice but to complete her mission.

When Feyre returns to her room, she finds Rhys lounging on her bed, clearly aware of her interactions with Tarquin. Their conversation quickly turns heated as Feyre confronts him about his flirtations with Cresseida, accusing him of using seduction for information. Rhys, in turn, accuses Feyre of being jealous, but he also admits that he was jealous of her connection with Tarquin. Rhys reveals his deeper insecurities—his jealousy stems from the fact that it would be easy for Tarquin to love Feyre, while Rhys feels that, because of his own dark past and responsibilities, he will never be that kind of person for anyone.

This raw honesty strikes a chord with Feyre, and she pours a drink for both of them, sharing a rare moment of vulnerability. They toast to the dreamers—people like themselves who look at the stars and wish for something better. Rhys’s final toast, "To the stars who listen—and the dreams that are answered," symbolizes the unspoken connection between them, hinting at the deeper bond they share.

CHAPTER 35 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 35, two days pass as Feyre continues her mission to find the Book of Breathings in the Summer Court. During these days, Feyre juggles the truth and deception as she scours the city in search of clues about the book’s location. She has to be cautious not to seem too interested or eager, carefully balancing her inquiries and exploration. Rhys and Amren keep Tarquin distracted in meetings to give her more time to investigate.

Feyre explores the city and observes the scars left by Amarantha's reign. She notices that while the city is healing, many of the people still bear visible signs of torment, though their spirits seem to be recovering. Despite the lack of success in locating the book, Feyre feels some relief in knowing that her actions Under the Mountain helped save them.

While walking near the palace, Feyre finally spots something unusual—a small, half-submerged building that only becomes visible during low tide. Instinctively, she feels drawn to it, suspecting that it might be hiding the Book of Breathings. However, she knows they must be certain before risking an infiltration.

At dinner with Tarquin, Cresseida, and Varian, Feyre plays her part, subtly steering the conversation toward the mysterious building. Tarquin’s casual response about it being a temple ruin confirms her suspicions. Feyre, now fully aware of the book’s potential location, uses her newfound daemati abilities to infiltrate Tarquin’s mind. She gently manipulates his thoughts, convincing him that she is harmless and should be allowed to explore the mainland with him, away from the temple.

This mental invasion disturbs Feyre, and though Rhys later compliments her skill, she feels uneasy about violating Tarquin’s trust. That night, Rhys and Amren come to Feyre’s room to discuss the plan. Rhys acknowledges how difficult it is to cross such boundaries, but reassures her that it was necessary to ensure the success of their mission. Amren joins the conversation, and they agree to move forward with infiltrating the temple the following night, during low tide.

Rhys plans to fly Feyre and Amren to the site, keeping watch from the sky while they search for the book. Feyre knows she’ll have to rely on her connection to Tarquin’s magic to unlock any barriers they might encounter. As they prepare for their mission, Feyre reflects on the weight of their actions, knowing the stakes are high.

The chapter ends with Feyre and Amren readying themselves for a midnight walk to observe the guards’ rotations and begin planning the final phase of their heist.

CHAPTER 36 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 36, Feyre endures a long, torturous day of deception as she continues playing the role of a guest at Tarquin’s court. She spends the day walking through the city with him, all while knowing that she’s about to steal the Book of Breathings. Feyre feels increasingly guilty, as she recognizes Tarquin’s kindness and generosity, but she rationalizes her mission by reminding herself that the Book is needed to stop the King of Hybern and save not only her people but Tarquin’s as well.

The tension rises as dinner approaches, knowing that the heist will take place that night. When Tarquin bids her a kind farewell, even expressing interest in visiting the Night Court, Feyre almost breaks down, but Rhysand’s presence grounds her, reminding her to stay focused on their task. After dinner, Feyre finds her Illyrian fighting leathers waiting for her, signifying that the moment to act has arrived.

At low tide, Rhys flies them to the hidden temple ruin. The muck and sea creatures make their approach unpleasant, but Feyre and Amren press on, entering the ancient, submerged building. Inside the dark, moonlit chamber, Feyre feels the sleeping power of the Book calling to her, like a clawed hand down her spine.

As they dig through the mud, they uncover a lead door, an ancient safeguard meant to contain powerful magic. Feyre uses her connection to Tarquin’s power to open the door, embodying his essence to trick the lock into thinking she is the High Lord of Summer. The lock responds to her, and the door opens, revealing a spiral staircase leading deeper into the gloom.

Amren and Feyre descend into the putrid water, which rises to their waists. They reach another lead door at the end of a hallway, and again, Feyre uses her borrowed power to unlock it. The power of the Book inside is overwhelming, drowning Feyre in its essence. Behind the second door, they find a dry chamber with a small lead box sitting on a pedestal.

Amren encourages Feyre to hurry, as the tide is rising. Feyre hears the voice of the Book of Breathings, ancient and cruel, whispering to her: Who are you? Despite the eerie sensation, Feyre steels herself and approaches the box. She uses the same mental trick as before, convincing the Book that she is Tarquin and that it must obey her. For a brief moment, the Book quiets.

Feyre grabs the lead box, feeling its icy weight in her hands. But as she does, the Book hisses “Liar,” and suddenly, the door slams shut, trapping Feyre and Amren inside.

CHAPTER 37 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 37, the tension reaches its peak as Feyre and Amren face the consequences of stealing the Book of Breathings from the temple. The chapter opens with Amren desperately trying to break down the door after it slams shut, locking them inside the rapidly flooding chamber. As the water continues to rise, Feyre and Amren struggle to escape, battling not just the water but also their own panic.

Feyre uses the last of her strength to try and break through the door, but it seems hopeless as the water overwhelms them. In a dramatic twist, water-wraiths appear and save them, pulling them to safety just before they would have drowned. One of the wraiths declares that their sister’s debt is paid, referring to the time Feyre had helped a starving wraith by paying her Tithe with her own jewelry back in the Spring Court. This unexpected act of kindness had saved their lives.

Exhausted and shaken, Feyre and Amren swim to a quiet shore, where they collapse. Rhysand arrives, sarcastically asking what they’re doing, revealing that he had been busy taking care of guards they had alerted. Despite nearly drowning, Rhys is more focused on whether they had succeeded in retrieving the Book. Feyre confirms by showing him the heavy lead box containing it.

Back at the Night Court's townhouse, Feyre and Amren finally clean up, and Feyre opens the Box containing the Book. The Book of Breathings speaks to her, calling her "liar," but Feyre persists and manages to unlock it. Inside, they find the Book—not of paper and ink, but metal plates bound by rings of gold, silver, and bronze, with ancient writing that even Feyre doesn’t recognize.

Amren, however, does. She reveals that the writing is in Leshon Hakodesh, the Holy Tongue of ancient, mighty beings who once lived in the world but vanished long ago. The book was written by these beings to combat the Cauldron's power. Rhysand had gambled that Amren would be able to read it, suspecting that it might hold the key to freeing her from her prison-like existence in this world.

The chapter ends on a poignant note, with Rhysand and Feyre sharing a private moment through their bond, where they acknowledge the success of their mission and the unexpected help they received from the water-wraiths. Rhys compliments Feyre for her kindness, which had been repaid in a way neither of them could have anticipated.

CHAPTER 38 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 38, Feyre grapples with the aftermath of their heist in the Summer Court, both physically and emotionally. Amren takes the Book of Breathings to her home in Velaris to study it, while the rest of the group stays behind to recover. Feyre, exhausted from the mission, rests until she wakes up later in the day and decides to relax in the garden with a book.

Eventually, she makes her way to the rooftop patio, where she finds Rhysand lounging, drinking, and clearly deep in thought. Rhys shares his guilt over stealing from Tarquin and his regret over ruining what could have been a valuable friendship with the High Lord of Summer. He explains that he feels responsible for not wiping the guards' memories, which led to them receiving blood rubies—a clear declaration that they are now enemies of the Summer Court.

Feyre listens and tries to console Rhys, suggesting that perhaps one day, after they defeat Hybern and neutralize the Cauldron, they could make amends with Tarquin. Rhys, however, knows that Amren would likely advocate for a far more violent solution, hinting at her destructive power. Feyre encourages him to focus on the bigger picture—winning the war—before worrying about the feud with Tarquin.

They engage in flirtatious banter, with Feyre teasing Rhys about shopping for lacy undergarments, attempting to draw him out of his somber mood. Rhys admits his attraction to Feyre, but their moment is interrupted by Azriel, and Feyre leaves, shaken by how close she had come to acting on her feelings for Rhys. Feyre realizes how much she has changed, reflecting on her past with Tamlin and the growing complexity of her emotions toward Rhys.

Later, as Feyre tries to sleep, she is awakened by a strange sensation. The house shudders, and darkness begins to flood the hallway. Realizing it's coming from Rhysand, she follows the trail to his room, where she finds him trapped in a nightmare, consumed by pain and guilt. Feyre uses her own connection to darkness to reach him, pulling him back to reality. When Rhys finally wakes, disoriented and still affected by the nightmare, Feyre soothes him and offers comfort.

In an intimate moment, Feyre kisses Rhys on the cheek, acknowledging the shared pain and understanding between them. As she leaves his room, Feyre reflects on the depth of Rhys's suffering, imagining him as a "dark, fallen prince," and feels the faint glimmer of healing within herself—a sign that she, too, is starting to mend from the traumas of her past.

CHAPTER 39 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 39, Feyre visits Amren at her apartment in Velaris, a small, simple space despite Amren’s fondness for lavish jewelry and clothing. They discuss Amren’s progress with decoding the Book of Breathings and her attempts to relearn the ancient language. Amren admits it will take time, and Feyre also learns that Varian sent Amren a necklace of rubies and diamonds to soften the feud between Tarquin and her. This gesture hints at the complicated dynamic between Amren and Varian, with Amren mentioning that Varian is unsure if he hates or desires her.

Feyre spends her days training with Cassian, learning to use Illyrian blades and honing the powers she inherited from the High Lords. Rhys helps her work through her gifts, giving her lessons on the nature and history of the other courts. Their bond continues to deepen, with Rhys writing her notes during his travels and encouraging her to open up about her painting and what she wants for her future.

As Rhys and Feyre exchange notes, their playful banter reveals their growing connection. Rhys admits he always wanted to be a High Lord, but he wanted to do it differently from his father, focusing on protecting his people and eliminating corruption. Feyre reflects on how this vision of leadership contrasts with Tamlin, who resented being High Lord.

Their peaceful days end when the mortal queens finally respond to their request for a meeting. The group, including Feyre's sisters Nesta and Elain, prepares to meet the queens at the Archeron family estate. Feyre dresses in a white gown adorned with gold accents, and Rhys wears his usual black attire, crowned with a raven-feathered crown. Cassian, Azriel, and Mor also accompany them, prepared for anything.

When the clock strikes eleven, five queens arrive, flanked by guards, revealing their ability to winnow—a significant and unexpected display of power.

CHAPTER 40 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 40, the mortal queens arrive to meet Rhysand and his court, an event fraught with tension and condescension from the outset. The queens are diverse in age, appearance, and temperament. The most notable are the eldest queen, cold and dismissive, and the youngest, a beautiful queen with golden hair who exudes cunning. Their guards are present but seem inadequate compared to the might of Rhysand and his companions, including Cassian and Azriel, who play the role of silent but formidable guards.

Rhysand introduces the group, including Mor, and they all take their seats for the negotiations. The conversation quickly turns to the impending war with Hybern. Feyre explains the gravity of the situation, pleading with the queens to provide their half of the Book of Breathings to prevent the wall between human and Fae realms from being destroyed. However, the eldest queen coldly declares that the human lands in this territory are insignificant and would be sacrificed in the war for the "greater good" of the continent.

Nesta, showing her fierce protectiveness and disdain for the queens' arrogance, snaps back, condemning their willingness to leave innocents to die. The queens, particularly the golden-haired one, continue to belittle the Night Court's efforts, accusing them of being responsible for the troubles between humans and Fae.

Mor takes control of the situation, calling on her ancient reputation as The Morrigan, a truth-teller from the War, to remind the queens of their ancestors who once sought peace between their peoples. She reveals the secret of Miryam and Drakon, who live in peace on a hidden island with both Fae and human peoples, free of war and strife. This revelation stuns the queens and forces them to reconsider.

The eldest queen, however, demands proof of Rhysand's peaceful intentions, doubting the rumors of his brutal reputation. Rhys does not immediately reveal Velaris, the peaceful and hidden city of his court, but he promises to provide proof, setting the stage for another meeting.

As the queens depart, the room is left in a heavy silence. In a rare moment, Elain, usually gentle and soft-spoken, quietly expresses her anger, saying she hopes the queens "burn in hell."

CHAPTER 41 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 41, after the failed meeting with the mortal queens, Rhysand and the others return to Velaris. Rhys is deeply affected by the queens' refusal to help and their demand for proof. His calm exterior hints at the frustration and gravity of the situation, leading them to gather in the garden of the town house for an impromptu discussion. Despite suggestions from Cassian and Mor to take more aggressive actions, Rhys rejects the idea of manipulating or replacing the queens, knowing the Book of Breathings must be freely given.

Rhys reveals his plan to provide proof of his good intentions: to show the queens Velaris, the secret city he's protected for centuries. The group is shocked at this suggestion, especially Mor and Azriel, who fear the risk of exposing the city’s location. But Rhys, determined to win the queens' trust and avoid a full-scale war, insists that the only way to prove their sincerity is to use the Veritas, an orb of truth-magic, to show Velaris without bringing the queens there physically. This orb belongs to Mor’s family in the Court of Nightmares, so Rhys plans to retrieve it during a visit to the Hewn City the next day.

As Rhys and Feyre discuss the grim reality of visiting the Court of Nightmares, Feyre learns more about the deeply personal pain that haunts Rhys and his court. Rhys shares a painful story about Mor, revealing that her family tried to sell her into marriage with Eris, Lucien’s brother, who cruelly rejected her after she had slept with Cassian to ruin her value as a pawn. After being tortured and abandoned by her family, Azriel found her near death, and Rhys had to stop him from exacting violent revenge. This history sheds light on Mor's resilience and the emotional scars she hides beneath her outward strength.

Feyre's determination grows as she realizes the stakes involved. She reassures Rhys of her trust and asks him to tell her what role she must play during their upcoming visit to the Court of Nightmares.

CHAPTER 42 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 42, Feyre, Rhysand, and the inner circle travel to the Court of Nightmares, deep within the Hewn City, for a mission that requires Rhys to retrieve the powerful Veritas orb from Mor's family. This chapter focuses on their descent into the brutal politics of the Hewn City and the roles they must play to survive its darkness and deceit.

Feyre isn't frightened by her role, but she is aware of the tension between her and Rhysand as they fly into the mountain range. Rhys is uncharacteristically aloof, showing concern for what they must do in the Court. Despite the seriousness of the mission, Feyre lightens the mood by teasing him about Illyrian males and their wings, which brings some humor and warmth between them.

However, their approach to the Hewn City is interrupted by an attack, as ash arrows are fired at them from the trees below. Rhys, Cassian, and Azriel react immediately, and they quickly realize this is a planned ambush. Feyre convinces Rhys to let her track the attackers, but they find no trace of them. The danger heightens their sense of urgency as they proceed to the Court of Nightmares.

Once inside the mountain-city, Feyre is struck by the grandeur and sinister beauty of the Hewn City, a metropolis carved from the mountain stone, filled with ancient, malevolent energy. It’s a place of debauchery and power, a mirror of the Under the Mountain court ruled by Amarantha, but on a grander, darker scale. Feyre and Mor arrive first, with Rhys, Cassian, and Azriel following.

Rhysand enters the throne room in full High Lord mode, his power radiating throughout the chamber as he takes his seat. He has Feyre sit on his lap, displaying her as his pet and lover, fully embracing the persona the Court of Nightmares expects. The scene between them is laced with sexual tension, dominance, and power, all of which are meant to distract the court from Azriel’s task of stealing the Veritas.

As Rhys plays his role, Feyre struggles internally with her own emotions, torn between her body's reaction to Rhys and her past with Tamlin. The court, including Keir, Mor’s father, watches their performance with disgust and jealousy. Keir, in particular, insults Feyre, calling her a "whore," which triggers Rhys’s wrath. Rhys breaks Keir's bones with his power, sending a clear message to everyone in the court: no one disrespects his court or his people.

Azriel successfully retrieves the Veritas orb, and Rhys leaves Keir broken and humiliated. Despite the darkness and cruelty of their performance, Feyre feels alive, awakened by the power and connection between her and Rhys. Yet, she is also aware that their relationship is evolving into something more dangerous and complicated.

CHAPTER 43 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 43, the emotional aftermath of Feyre and Rhysand’s performance in the Court of Nightmares plays out. After the intense and violent interaction with Keir, Rhys brings Feyre to a secluded, moonlit lake for privacy. There, Rhys is visibly shaken, apologizing for subjecting Feyre to the dark side of his world and for his reaction to Keir's insult. He admits he struggles with his protective instincts, which reminds Feyre too much of Tamlin, who locked her away in a misguided attempt to protect her. This parallel angers Feyre, and she confronts Rhys, telling him not to protect her like that and not to hide things from her.

Rhys, vulnerable and raw, tells Feyre that he fears how their story will be told: with him cast as the villain, the "dark lord" who stole Tamlin's bride, while Tamlin is the golden hero. The words are charged, and Feyre is left realizing she doesn’t know what she truly wants anymore. Their conversation ends on a tense note, with Rhys taking Feyre back to Velaris.

Back at the town house, Feyre reflects on her actions, regretting how she used Rhys’s vulnerabilities against him. She realizes that, despite the flirtation and the games they’ve played, she has real feelings for him. Feyre confronts her jealousy over Cresseida and her growing desire for Rhys, recognizing that she doesn’t want to pretend anymore. She’s ready to be honest about wanting him and willing to explore their relationship, despite the pain and fear it might bring.

However, Rhys does not come to her. He avoids her completely, leaving her waiting for him in the garden and the next day at breakfast and lunch. Despite Feyre's attempts to communicate, through letters and notes, Rhys remains distant. Her frustration grows, and she begins to feel abandoned.

Feyre visits Amren, who reveals that Rhys has gone to hunt down those responsible for the ash arrow attack. Amren also informs Feyre about Starfall, a special event unique to the Night Court, which will take place the next day. As Feyre processes her emotions, Amren tells her how Rhys came back from Under the Mountain a ghost and how Feyre brought him back to life. Amren praises Rhys’s vision for a better world, revealing that he dreams of peace and unity for everyone, something no other High Lord had done.

Feyre attempts to reach Rhys again, leaving him notes, but he doesn’t respond. Finally, in her frustration, she calls him a "hateful coward." The note vanishes, but still, no reply comes from him.

CHAPTER 44 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 44, Feyre is dressed in a stunning gown of pale blue gems, almost resembling a fallen star, as she prepares for the Starfall celebration. She’s still conflicted about her relationship with Rhys, but she gathers the courage to join the party at the House of Wind, where she meets Cassian, who has been her training partner and companion in Rhys’s absence. After some light banter, Mor joins Feyre, dressed in white and beautiful, catching the attention of Azriel, whose unspoken longing for her is clear. Mor reflects on her past, revealing a brief romantic connection with Cassian when they were younger, and how it created tension among their group, especially with Rhys and Azriel.

Rhysand finally appears, looking his usual regal self, but his demeanor is strained. Feyre confronts him about his absence, and though Rhys doesn't immediately engage, he takes Feyre aside to a quieter spot, and they finally address the tension between them. Rhys explains that he needed time to process the things Feyre had said to him. Though they exchange light banter, their underlying emotions remain intense.

The Starfall event itself is a beautiful spectacle, with countless stars—spirits—racing across the sky in a yearly migration. The entire city celebrates, dancing in joy. Rhys takes Feyre to a private balcony, where they watch the stars together. As they stand close, a star collides with Feyre’s face, and she is splattered with glowing star-spirit. Rhys laughs, a real, open laugh, something that Feyre hadn’t heard from him before. The shared moment is filled with playfulness and an emerging connection between them.

As they wipe off the glowing stardust, Feyre paints stars on Rhys's hand, a symbolic moment showing that she's ready to embrace creativity again. She asks Rhys to share his thoughts, and he admits that he regrets their kiss Under the Mountain, wishing it had been under better circumstances.

In a poignant moment, Feyre, filled with emotion and desire for honesty, asks Rhys to dance with her. He agrees, promising to dance all night if that’s what she wants. The chapter ends with a tender, whispered kiss on her cheek, as Rhys tells Feyre he is glad they met. They head to join the celebration below, dancing together under the rain of stars.

CHAPTER 45 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 45, Feyre, Rhys, Mor, and Cassian travel to an Illyrian war-camp in the northern mountains, where spring has barely arrived, and the camp is cold, bleak, and militaristic. As they arrive, Feyre reflects on the magical night of Starfall, when they danced together until dawn. She recounts her inner turmoil after the night, conflicted about her growing feelings for Rhys, which make her feel like a traitor to Tamlin.

At the camp, Feyre witnesses the harsh, brutal training environment where Cassian, Rhys, and Azriel grew up. The leader of the camp, Lord Devlon, interacts dismissively with them, particularly toward Cassian and the female warriors they are trying to train. Rhys makes it clear that Feyre belongs to him and warns the Illyrians not to harm her, while Feyre silently absorbs the dynamics and tension.

As Rhys and Feyre prepare to leave the camp for her training, they fly over the Illyrian steppes, discussing the challenges of training female Illyrians and the cultural resistance to their empowerment. Rhys explains the Blood Rite, a deadly Illyrian ritual that he, Cassian, and Azriel once survived together. The conversation turns to the past, and Feyre finally asks Rhys about his history with Tamlin.

Rhys reveals a devastating story: he and Tamlin were once friends, but Tamlin's family—fueled by jealousy and ambition—brutally murdered Rhys’s mother and sister. Rhys had once trusted Tamlin, even teaching him Illyrian fighting techniques, but that trust was betrayed when Tamlin’s family slaughtered his loved ones. Rhys and his father sought revenge, killing Tamlin’s father and brothers, but Rhys’s father also killed Tamlin’s mother, breaking a promise to Rhys not to harm her. In a final, dramatic twist, Tamlin killed Rhys’s father, and they both became High Lords in that moment.

Feyre is overwhelmed by this revelation, feeling deep sorrow for Rhys and realizing that Tamlin had never told her the truth. Her shock and emotions stir her powers, and she unintentionally unleashes a fiery explosion in the clearing. Rhys calms her down as she begins to accept the magnitude of her abilities, realizing that the powers of the High Lords now belong to her and that she alone controls her future.

As the fire subsides, Feyre’s determination to harness her powers strengthens, and she tells Rhys she wants to paint again—a sign that she is healing. The chapter closes with a tender moment between them as Rhys jokes that Feyre should paint him nude, hinting at the deepening connection and trust between them.

CHAPTER 46 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 46, Feyre experiences the brutal cold of the Illyrian war-camp, where even the roaring fire can’t seem to warm her after the intense training with Rhysand. As she sits with Rhys, Cassian, and Mor at dinner, they discuss the ongoing efforts to train the female Illyrian warriors, despite the obstacles put in their way by the camp's leaders. Cassian expresses frustration over the girls being forced to do chores instead of receiving proper training, while Mor talks about the potential in some of the girls, lamenting how their families want them to be restricted to traditional roles.

After dinner, Rhys and Feyre share a charged moment at the top of the stairs before heading to their separate rooms. Feyre feels the tension between them but retreats, still grappling with the complex emotions swirling between them, including her feelings of betrayal toward Tamlin.

The next day, Rhys and Feyre head out into the Illyrian steppes for another training session, far from the camp and prying eyes. Rhys carries their packs as Feyre leads the way, trying to manage the confusing feelings she has toward him. She decides that keeping things simple—just fun and physical—would be less complicated, though even she doubts whether that’s truly possible.

While in the forest, Feyre feels Rhys's presence in the bond between them, his hunger and amusement radiating through. As she prepares to practice her powers, she signals Rhys to stay back. But before she can begin, Feyre is ambushed by a group of Spring Court sentinels led by Lucien, her former friend and ally from Tamlin's court. Caught off guard, Feyre turns to face them with an arrow nocked, unsure of what’s to come.

CHAPTER 47 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 47, Feyre encounters Lucien and four Spring Court sentinels, who have been hunting for her for months. Lucien pleads with her to return, revealing Tamlin’s desperation and the chaos that has engulfed the Spring Court since her departure. However, Feyre is resolute in her decision to stay away. When Lucien steps closer, Feyre instinctively uses her magic, shape-shifting into smoke and reappearing behind the sentinels, leaving them shocked.

Rhysand arrives just in time, standing at Feyre’s side, and mocks Lucien for disregarding Feyre’s wishes. Lucien, desperate, accuses Feyre of being manipulated, but Feyre fiercely defends her independence, reminding Lucien how he had failed her in the Spring Court by not intervening when she was imprisoned. She coldly declares that the Spring Court is no longer her home and threatens Lucien to never seek her out again.

In a powerful display of her newfound strength, Feyre manifests Illyrian wings, showing Lucien just how much she has changed. She warns him to stay away and deliver a message to Tamlin: if anyone from the Spring Court enters Night Court territory again, she will hunt them down and show them the darkness she has learned to wield. Lucien, clearly devastated, leaves with the sentinels, issuing a final, ominous threat to Rhys.

After Lucien’s departure, Rhys comforts Feyre, tracing a finger down her newly formed wings, eliciting a visceral response from her. Feyre reveals that the wings and shape-shifting abilities came from Tamlin’s power, a reminder of the past she had tried to forget. Despite the emotional intensity of the encounter, Feyre is more unsettled by how easily she could be cold and unfeeling toward Lucien. Rhys offers a moment of comfort, telling her she looks good with wings before kissing her brow.

CHAPTER 48 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 48, Feyre and Rhysand take refuge in a tiny, cramped room in a remote inn, far from any major cities or courts. Despite the lack of space and comfort, they share a moment of warmth and vulnerability, contrasting their dangerous and emotionally charged journey. Rhys has muted his immense power to blend in as a common Illyrian warrior, making their stay less conspicuous.

While Rhys leaves to fetch them food, Feyre reflects on her complicated feelings toward Tamlin and Lucien, realizing that she has moved on from her previous life. Tamlin’s controlling behavior and Lucien’s failure to support her weigh heavily on her mind, but she recognizes that her connection with Rhys is different. Unlike Tamlin, Rhys would never ignore her struggles or fail to see her for who she is.

When Rhys returns, they share a meal, and their conversation takes on a deeper tone. Rhys confesses that, despite giving Feyre the freedom to choose her path, he would have torn the world apart if Lucien had tried to force her back to the Spring Court. This intense declaration deepens their bond, highlighting Rhys’s respect for her autonomy while also expressing the depth of his feelings for her.

The scene escalates into a heated, intimate moment between them, full of tension and desire. Rhys reveals his growing attraction and need for Feyre, but he restrains himself from going further, preferring to draw out their connection rather than rush into anything. They fall asleep wrapped in each other’s warmth, with Rhys tenderly stroking Feyre until sleep takes over.

CHAPTER 49 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 49, Feyre wakes up feeling safe and content in Rhysand's arms after the intimacy they shared the previous night. As sunlight filters through the window, they share a quiet, tender moment. Feyre asks Rhys why he made the bargain for one week a month with her, and Rhys reveals that it was partly to make a statement to Amarantha and also to anger Tamlin. His admission that he had used her as a pawn for his people and family stirs unease in Feyre, though the bond between them remains undeniable.

The peaceful morning quickly gives way to a harrowing ambush. As they fly over the forest, Rhys is struck by ash arrows laced with poison. Despite his powerful magic, he is unable to winnow them away due to the ash arrows' debilitating effects. As they plummet through the sky, Rhys manages to use his magic to throw Feyre to safety while he falls into the ambush.

Feyre, fueled by an ancient and vicious rage, tracks down Rhys’s captors using her powers of winnowing and heightened senses. She finds him brutally tortured, his wings pierced with seven ash arrows, and suspended by chains that nullify his magic. Rhys is on the brink of death, and Feyre swiftly kills the captors, driven by a fierce protective instinct.

In the aftermath, Feyre gently tends to Rhys’s wounds, carefully removing the ash arrows from his wings. As she works, she tells him a story about how, as a teenager, she had painted stars and the night sky on her dresser, perhaps unconsciously foretelling her future and connection to Rhys. Through this tender moment, Feyre reflects on her past despair and the loneliness she had felt, realizing that deep down, she had always been searching for this—her connection to Rhys, to Velaris, and to the night.

Rhys, still in pain, apologizes for leading them into the ambush, explaining that Hybern soldiers had used ancient chains to trap him. Just before losing consciousness, Rhys admits that he, too, had been searching for Feyre all along.

CHAPTER 50 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 50, Feyre spends a sleepless night beside Rhysand in the cave, watching over him as he lies unconscious. As dawn breaks, she realizes that Rhys is in worse condition than she had feared: the poison on the ash arrows has infected his body, leaving him feverish and struggling to heal. Fearful for his life and with no time to wait for help, Feyre sets out to seek a solution on her own.

Feyre sets a trap in the forest, luring the ancient and mysterious creature known as the Suriel. She asks the Suriel what poison was used and how to cure it. The Suriel reveals that the poison is Bloodbane and that Feyre’s own blood contains the healing power of the High Lord of the Dawn Court. It also tells her that a pink-flowered weed by the river can aid in Rhys’s recovery.

However, the Suriel delivers a shocking revelation: Rhysand is her mate.

This truth hits Feyre like a blow, and the Suriel’s confirmation that Rhys has known for a long time only deepens her anger. She is furious that Rhys has kept something so important from her, despite his promises of honesty.

Returning to the cave, Feyre gives Rhys the pink weed to chew and uses her blood to help heal him. As Rhys regains his strength, Feyre confronts him about the mating bond. Rhys admits that he has known since Under the Mountain, when the bond snapped into place. He explains that he hadn’t told her because she had been in love with Tamlin and was going through too much for him to burden her with the knowledge of the bond.

Feyre, feeling betrayed by Rhys’s decision to withhold the truth, accuses him of assuming that he knew best for her. She feels hurt and furious that he kept this from her while his friends, like Mor and Amren, knew. Her heart, which had been slowly healing, is now aching from this revelation, and the trust she had built with Rhys is shattered.

Ignoring Rhys’s pleas, Feyre demands that he take her back to the Illyrian camp immediately. Though still weak and in pain, Rhys complies and winnows them both back to the camp, leaving their bond strained and Feyre feeling heartbroken.

CHAPTER 51 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 51, Feyre and Rhysand winnow back to the Illyrian camp, but Rhys is so weak that they land in the freezing mud outside the stone house. As Feyre storms away, Cassian and Mor rush out of the house to help. Cassian goes to assist Rhys, but Mor sees the turmoil on Feyre's face and agrees to take her away.

Feyre, overwhelmed and in need of space, asks Mor to take her somewhere far away. Mor winnows them to a remote log cabin high in the snowy mountains. The cabin is protected by wards, ensuring that no one, not even Rhys, can find her without permission. Mor explains that the cabin had been used by their group for "reflection" when they were younger, and it has all the comforts Feyre might need—food, warmth, and even spells that will take care of her.

Feyre is still reeling from the revelation that Rhys is her mate, which she learned from the Suriel. Mor tries to explain that Rhys had wanted to tell her but struggled with how to do so. She emphasizes that Rhys has never been happier than he is when he’s with Feyre, but Feyre is too hurt and angry to care. She demands that Mor not tell Rhys where she is and not let him find her.

Once alone, Feyre stands in the quiet cabin, still processing everything that has happened, especially the shock and betrayal she feels from Rhys.

PART 3 THE HOUSE OF  MIST

CHAPTER 52 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 52, Feyre discovers a deep, sunken tub in the mountain cabin, large enough to accommodate Illyrian wings. After three days without a bath, she fills the tub with near-scalding water and washes away the grime, relishing the warmth and cleanliness. She reflects on her tumultuous feelings surrounding Rhysand and the revelation of their mate bond.

While preparing a meal of soup and fresh bread, Feyre contemplates her past relationship with Tamlin and the emotional turmoil of discovering that Rhys had known she was his mate while she had been with Tamlin. This realization stirs conflicting feelings within her, leaving her to question Rhys's motives and the implications of their bond. She acknowledges the relief of leaving Tamlin and embracing her connection with Rhys.

After completing her chores, Feyre succumbs to boredom, exploring the cabin and discovering various art supplies. She is inspired to paint and immerses herself in creativity, decorating the cabin with vibrant colors and intricate designs, including depictions of her friends and their shared history. The act of painting becomes a form of self-expression and healing for Feyre, allowing her to process her emotions.

As night falls, Mor unexpectedly arrives, impressed by Feyre's artwork. Their conversation turns to Mor's past and her relationship with Azriel, revealing the complexities of their intertwined lives. Mor encourages Feyre to consider the benefits of embracing her role as Rhys's mate and the potential of being part of their family.

Feyre finds comfort in Mor’s words and acknowledges that being with Rhys is not a burden but a source of strength and belonging. The chapter concludes with Feyre solidifying her acceptance of her bond with Rhys, recognizing that she has found her place within their court and the larger tapestry of their lives.

CHAPTER 53 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 53, Feyre enjoys the aftermath of Mor’s overnight visit, where Mor humorously paints stick figures on the wall, capturing their friendship in a light-hearted way. After saying goodbye to Mor as she leaves the cabin, Feyre gazes across the snowy landscape, contemplating the eventual arrival of summer. She imagines a future filled with warmth, vibrant meadows, and the possibility of opening her own art shop in Velaris, where she can teach others who have experienced pain and darkness, much like herself.

Feyre’s daydreams take a romantic turn as she envisions Rhysand being a part of her life, sharing laughter, stories, and moments filled with joy. This vision gives her a renewed sense of purpose and a future that feels attainable. She resolves to fight for this future, embracing the opportunities that immortality offers her.

As five days pass, Feyre immerses herself in painting every room of the cottage, expressing her creativity and grappling with her thoughts. Despite her artistic pursuits, she becomes weary of solitude and the persistent thawing snow, yearning for connection.

Just when she feels the weight of her thoughts, Mor returns, knocking on the door with her characteristic impatience. Feyre, fresh from a bath and still drying her hair, opens the door to the cool air, ready to embrace whatever Mor brings back with her.

Rhys’s presence brings a mix of comfort and apprehension as they confront the bond that ties them together.

Rhys explains the significance of a female offering food to her mate, revealing a deep tradition that signifies acceptance of their bond. As Feyre heats some soup for him, she asks Rhys to share his story. He recounts his harrowing experiences during the War and his capture by Amarantha’s forces, detailing the torture he endured and his determination to escape. The memories are filled with pain and loss, revealing the trauma that has shaped him.

Rhys shares how he watched his comrades suffer and how his rage fueled his desire for revenge against Amarantha. He reflects on the moment he realized Feyre was his mate and how he tried to protect her from afar, even as he was forced to endure his own torment under Amarantha’s reign.

CHAPTER 57 RECAP - A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

In Chapter 57, spring finally blooms in the human world as Feyre prepares for another meeting with the queens. This time, only the eldest and the golden-haired queens arrive, surrounded by their guards. Feyre wears a flowing ivory gown and a crown of gold feathers, standing confidently beside Rhysand, their hands united, symbolizing their deep connection.

The atmosphere is tense as the queens sit without invitation. The eldest queen glances at Feyre and Rhys, and the conversation quickly turns contentious. The queens express their disdain, blaming Nesta for their prior insult, to which Feyre calmly responds, asserting that the impending war will bring far worse insults. The younger queen, intrigued, acknowledges Feyre's bond with Rhys, and Feyre emphasizes the importance of their connection, pointing out the significance of her sisters' presence.

As the conversation escalates, the queens demand proof of Rhys and Feyre's good intentions. Despite her reservations, Feyre supports revealing the Veritas, a powerful orb that holds the truth of their world. Rhys insists that showing them Velaris is essential to securing their alliance. Mor presents the Veritas, and as its magic unfolds, it projects the vibrant, peaceful city of Velaris, revealing the beauty and joy of their home.

The queens are visibly affected by the vision, but when they remain unmoved, Mor pushes for immediate action against the rising threat of Hybern. The ancient queen dismisses their urgency, leading to a tense standoff. Nesta boldly demands that the queens grant Feyre the Book of Breathings, highlighting the risks they all face.

Amid the tension, Cassian steps forward, offering his support to Nesta, which deepens their connection. Despite their attempts to sway the queens, they leave without a definitive agreement, taking with them a hidden box containing the second half of the Book. The ominous words of the book echo in the room, signifying chaos and the uncertainty of the future.

Rhys and Mor leave to visit the Court of Nightmares, and Feyre is left with Cassian and Azriel, who have taken it upon themselves to protect her. Despite her desire for independence, she learns that they will instinctively guard her as part of their bond. Their correspondence reveals Feyre's longing for Rhys and the playful teasing that characterizes their relationship.

Two days pass, and as Feyre and Cassian return from a performance, they sense an ominous shift. Cassian transforms into a warrior as a strange energy thrums beneath the river, signaling an impending attack. When dark figures emerge from the sea, it becomes clear that Hybern's forces are upon them, led by Attor soldiers with armor that can repel magic.

As chaos erupts, Feyre refuses to retreat. She grabs Cassian’s weapons, ready to defend her home and people. Despite the overwhelming odds, she taps into her powers, summoning water from the Sidra to create wolves that attack the invading forces.

With a fierce resolve, Feyre tracks the Attor through the air, using her powers to bind herself to it. In a moment of collision, she strikes with poisoned arrows, pinning its wings and rendering it unable to escape. The fight is intense as Feyre channels her pain and anger, using her dagger to exact vengeance for her loved ones, especially for Rhys and Clare.
