Casteel can now control this power, sense emotions like Poppy, transform into a cave cat, and communicate mentally with Kieran through the notam. However, neither man understands exactly what they have become.
Poppy remains unconscious and cold, and Casteel refuses to leave her. He blames himself for failing to protect her from the Revenant and barely eats or sleeps because he is terrified she will wake without remembering herself—or without recognizing him.
Hisa and Kieran arrive with troubling news: several Ascended have died in the wealthy Luxe district. The deaths were not caused by angry mortals or Descenters, and Kieran insists Casteel must see the scene himself.
Before Casteel agrees to go, Kieran confronts him about neglecting both himself and his responsibilities. Carsodonia is unstable:
- Thousands of captured Blood Crown soldiers still refuse allegiance to Atlantia.
- Some will be executed after violently rejecting every offered choice.
- Mortals are frightened by wolven, draken, gods awakening beneath the city, and the revelation that the Ascended are vamprys.
- Blood Crown loyalists are spreading distrust.
- People are questioning why neither their new King nor Queen has appeared publicly.
- Many have also come to pay homage to Poppy after learning what she truly is.
Casteel refuses to make a public appearance because doing so without Poppy could reveal that she is weakened. That knowledge could encourage Blood Crown loyalists, remaining Revenants, or Kolis to act.
Kieran reminds him that when Casteel was imprisoned, Poppy also wanted to abandon everything and rescue him immediately. Instead, she controlled herself and fulfilled her duty as Queen because countless lives depended on her. Casteel must now do the same.
Reluctantly, Casteel leaves Poppy under Kieran and Delano’s protection and travels with Hisa and Emil to the Luxe.
As they approach, Casteel notices the entire area feels unnaturally heavy and wrong. He also experiences the overwhelming emotions of nearby mortals, confirming that he has inherited an ability similar to Poppy’s empathic gift.
Reaver suddenly dives over them, nearly knocking everyone from their horses and terrifying the residents before flying away, apparently amused.
Despite the humour of the moment, the district remains eerily silent. Casteel realizes that the kingdom cannot remain frozen while they wait for Poppy. If she does not wake soon, he will be forced to make major decisions without her, including dealing with the Ascended, ending the curfew, and finding Kolis.
The chapter ends with Casteel desperately assuring himself:

Chapter 2 Summary
Casteel reaches the Luxe district and learns that the Ascended deaths are far stranger than expected. Around thirteen Ascended have been found dead across several guarded homes, even though no one was seen entering or leaving.
Inside the first residence, Casteel finds the Ascended completely drained of blood. Each victim has two fang marks on the neck, but there are no signs of fighting or resistance. Even more strangely, they have not turned into Craven, despite being drained in a way that should normally cause it.
The same pattern appears in every house:
- All lights have mysteriously shattered.
- The Ascended were peacefully sitting, reading, or resting when they died.
- There are no other wounds.
- Nobody entered or escaped.
- A sweet but stale scent fills the rooms.
- Plants and animals near the houses have also died.
The deaths appear almost impossible, as though an unseen spirit entered each home.
While investigating, Emil begins questioning whether every Ascended deserves to be viewed as equally monstrous. One home contains books, birds, paintings, and an unfinished chess game, making the Ascended who lived there seem disturbingly normal. Emil points out that many second sons and daughters may have been forced to Ascend under threat of death.
Casteel is not ready to excuse their actions, but Emil’s doubts stay with him.
Outside, Casteel discovers that the flowers and grass around the affected homes have turned gray and crumble into dust when touched. They carry the same stale-sweet smell associated with death and the Revenants.
This leads Casteel to suspect that Kolis may be responsible.
He orders additional protection around the remaining Ascended and places guards around the Shadow Temple, ensuring that nothing—mortal, god, or shadow—can enter or leave.
Casteel Questions Reaver
Back at Wayfair, Casteel asks Reaver whether Kolis could currently exist in a spirit-like form.
Reaver explains that Kolis was placed in stasis by being impaled with the bones of an Ancient. Over time, this would have destroyed most of his physical body, leaving mainly his Primal soul, called an aru’lis.
An aru’lis can resemble a shadow or spirit and may briefly become solid. That means Kolis could theoretically move unseen and still form fangs long enough to drain someone’s blood.
This strongly supports Casteel’s theory that Kolis killed the Ascended.
How Kolis Could Return
Reaver reveals that Kolis could regain a body by using a vessel.
For this to work:
- Kolis’s soul must enter the vessel at the exact moment the vessel’s original soul leaves.
- The vessel must carry essence similar to Kolis’s.
- Entering too early could trap two souls inside one body.
Casteel realizes that Malec, as Nyktos’s son and Kolis’s great-nephew, carried the correct kind of essence.
This leads to a disturbing conclusion:
Isbeth probably never intended to sacrifice Malec. She intended to use Malec’s body as a vessel for Kolis.

Poppy is then pulled through fragmented memories before suddenly finding herself inside a golden cage. She cannot remember her name or identity, but she knows one thing clearly:
She is the Primal of Life and Death—the Harbinger and Bringer feared by the Ancients.
She knows what she is, but not who she is.
Inside the cage are a bed, chains, and familiar objects, but Poppy does not understand their meaning. Shadowy Primal mist enters the cage, binds her wrists, ankles, body, and throat, and prevents her from accessing her eather.
