Chapter 1 Recap - From Blood and Ash

Poppy's Life :
In Chapter 1, we are introduced to Poppy, the Maiden, who lives under strict rules of isolation. As the Maiden, she’s seen as sacred and untouchable, meant to stay hidden from the world. Her face must always be covered with a veil, and no one is allowed to speak to her or touch her.

Poppy's Visit to the Red Pearl and Finley's Death:
Poppy, enters the Red Pearl tavern in disguise, wearing a mask and cloak borrowed from a servant named Britta. She sits down at a table, hoping to blend in and escape the suffocating restrictions of her life as the Maiden. As she listens to three off-duty guards, she overhears a chilling conversation about a man named Finley, who was found dead outside the Blood Forest.
One of the younger guards, Airrick, describes the gruesome nature of Finley’s death: “He wasn’t just dead. Finley was drained of blood, his flesh chewed up like wild dogs had a go at him, and then torn to pieces.” This alarms Poppy as she knows wild dogs couldn’t have been responsible. The only place nearby is the Blood Forest, rumored to be home to the deadly Craven, creatures that feast on humans. The guards suspect the Craven may be nearing the city.
Poppy, trying to remain calm, is grateful that no one recognizes her, especially Phillips, a seasoned guard who nods in her direction and refers to her as a “lady.” Poppy panics briefly, worried her identity might be exposed, but reassures herself that the mask is enough to keep her hidden. She insists she is no “lady” and encourages the guards to continue their conversation, though Phillips redirects them to a less morbid topic. As the guards move away from the gruesome topic, Poppy reflects on the danger of the Craven and the failure of the Rise (the wall that protects the kingdom) to keep them at bay. She is constantly reminded of the strict role she must play as the Maiden, forbidden to live a normal life or speak of her “gift,” the ability to sense pain in others.

Poppy's dagger:
Poppy feels trapped by her identity as the Maiden but finds solace in small acts of rebellion, like sneaking into the Red Pearl and carrying her favorite weapon, a dagger with a handle made from wolven bone and a bloodstone blade. She longs for freedom, and this visit to the Red Pearl is her way of living outside the rules, if only for a few hours.
As the chapter progresses, Poppy notices the other patrons in the tavern, including women dressed in revealing gowns. She feels a sense of curiosity and envy at their freedom to live their lives without the weight of expectations that she carries. She contemplates the possibility of engaging in an encounter of her choosing, exploring her own desires in a way she normally couldn’t.

Victors Appearance to  Red Pearl:
As Poppy prepares to leave, she experiences a sudden sense of being watched and realizes that Vikter, her personal guard and mentor, has entered the Red Pearl. She panics at the thought of being caught by him and scrambles to find a hiding place. A mysterious woman working at the tavern recognizes Poppy’s disguise and leads her to a private room upstairs, offering her sanctuary.

The Mystery Man:
In the final moment of the chapter, Poppy enters the room, only to be pulled against a very hard, very male body, and a deep voice whispers, “This is unexpected.”

Chapter 2 Recap - From Blood and Ash

Poppy’s Surprise Meeting with Hawke:
The chapter begins with Poppy caught off guard in a private room at the Red Pearl when Hawke Flynn grabs her from behind, mistaking her for someone else—likely Britta, the servant whose cloak Poppy has borrowed. Poppy freezes, shocked to find herself in the arms of Hawke, a Rise guard she’s admired from afar. Hawke releases her but seems pleased by the “surprise,” not realizing that she’s not who he thinks she is.

Poppy’s Fascination with Hawke:
Poppy describes Hawke’s striking appearance and how she’s noticed him ever since he arrived from Carsodonia. He’s tall, muscular, with dark hair and captivating golden-honey eyes.  Poppy recalls watching him train at Castle Teerman and how his graceful, predatory movements remind her of the large, caged cave cats from her childhood. She notes the intensity of his presence and the pain she once sensed within him—a deep, emotional suffering he keeps hidden. “Hawke was always in pain… Not the physical kind. It was deeper than that, feeling like chips of sharp ice against my skin.”

Misunderstanding & Disappointment:
Hawke mistakenly believes Poppy is Britta and refers to her as "sweetling", saying he didn’t expect her that night. Poppy feels a mix of emotions—she's disappointed that Hawke thinks she’s someone else, but also curious and nervous about the situation. Despite knowing she should stop the charade, Poppy doesn’t correct him immediately.  Hawke: “It’s only been a few days, sweetling.” This shows that Hawke thinks he’s familiar with her and had seen Britta before. Poppy considers fleeing the room, especially because Vikter (her guard and mentor) is downstairs. However, she hesitates, knowing it’s risky, but also intrigued by the situation. The tension rises as Hawke continues interacting with her, still under the impression that she’s Britta.
Poppy realizes that Hawke believes she is Britta due to her borrowed cloak and similar height. This makes her question whether she should reveal her true identity. However, she remains silent, unsure of what to do next. Poppy is conflicted. She knows she should reveal herself but is intrigued by Hawke’s attention. Her feelings of curiosity and rebellion take over, and she remains quiet as Hawke continues to talk, thinking she's Britta. The conversation hints at a previous encounter between Hawke and Britta, which makes Poppy feel a mix of jealousy and excitement. The situation escalates when Hawke, sensing her unusual quietness, decides to act.

Hawke Removes His Tunic:
Hawke pulls off his tunic, revealing his muscular chest. Poppy is mesmerized by his physique, and though she knows it’s wrong, she’s frozen by curiosity and excitement. This moment symbolizes Poppy’s desire to live freely, to experience things forbidden to her as the Maiden. “I should’ve stepped away… I should’ve left immediately… Yet, I didn’t move or speak.” Poppy’s internal struggle is clear here—she’s caught between her role as the Chosen One, with all the restrictions it entails, and her desire for freedom and normal experiences.

The Kiss:
Hawke moves closer and kisses Poppy—her first kiss. The kiss is overwhelming and intense, unlike anything she imagined. It’s passionate, making Poppy feel emotions she’s never experienced before.

Poppy's Thoughts:
“There was no time for the two warring emotions to battle. He pivoted and strode forward… In a matter of a few stuttering heartbeats, he was guiding us down, his grip strong but careful.”  However, Hawke quickly realizes something is off and pulls back, asking: “Who are you?” This moment shifts the dynamic, as Hawke pulls back her hood and exposes Poppy’s face. He immediately recognizes that she’s not Britta.

Hawke’s Realization:
After discovering that Poppy isn’t Britta, Hawke comments that Britta’s kiss was very different, humorously implying that the maid had been much more aggressive. Hawke questions whether Poppy has ever kissed anyone before, and though Poppy tries to lie, it’s clear that this was her first experience. Hawke: “You’re definitely not who I thought you were… Have you been kissed before?”This is a key moment where Hawke realizes who he’s with, and Poppy’s inexperience is exposed.

Teasing and Banter:
After realizing who Poppy is (though not her full identity), Hawke starts to tease her, calling her “Princess” and questioning why she didn’t stop him. Poppy is flustered and embarrassed, but there’s clear chemistry between them. Despite the tension, there’s a playful dynamic as Hawke gently presses Poppy to reveal more about herself, while she tries to deflect. Hawke: “I think you came to this room with a purpose in mind.” Hawke suspects that Poppy came to the Red Pearl seeking something beyond simple conversation.

Discussion on Life & Death:
The conversation shifts to deeper topics as they discuss their lives. Poppy asks Hawke why he joined the Rise, and Hawke explains that his father was a farmer and joining the Royal Army was one of the few options available. They also touch on the topic of loss and death, revealing a deeper side of both characters.
“Death is like an old friend who pays a visit… sometimes when it’s least expected and other times when you’re waiting for her.”
This highlights Hawke’s personal experience with death and loss, adding complexity to his character.

 Poppy’s Internal Struggle:
Throughout the chapter, Poppy reflects on why she came to the Red Pearl in the first place. She wanted to experience life outside the limitations of being the Maiden. She realizes that she could stop this encounter at any time, but she doesn’t, because she wants to live—to choose her own path, even if only for one night.
“I knew why I came here tonight, and Hawke was right. It wasn’t to talk. I came here to live. To experience. To choose.”
This is a pivotal moment for Poppy, as she wrestles with her role as the Chosen One and her desire for independence and freedom.

Chapter 3 Recap - From Blood and Ash

Poppy’s Thoughts on Ascension and Fear of Being Found Unworthy:
The chapter begins with Poppy reflecting on her fear of being found unworthy during her Ascension. She recalls that only one person had been deemed unworthy in the past, their name erased from history, resulting in exile and likely death. Poppy's internal struggle shows her dread of what may happen if she fails, but despite this fear, she remains in the moment, unable to stop her encounter with Hawke.

Hawke's Intrigue and Flirtation:
Hawke continues to show his curiosity about Poppy, despite not knowing her true identity. He plays with the ribbon of her cloak, asks permission to remove her mask, and explores her body with gentle, teasing touches. Poppy feels a mix of excitement and confusion, torn between enjoying the experience and questioning his motivations. Hawke admits that he is intrigued by her, and though he could be doing other things, he prefers to stay with her.
“What do you want from me?” he asks.
Poppy feels vulnerable and confused, as she doesn’t know what to ask for in this unfamiliar situation.

Hawke’s Past Interactions:
Hawke’s candidness extends to admitting that he had been with someone else earlier that evening, but he assures Poppy that it wasn’t in the same way he is now with her. This moment is crucial because it shows Poppy’s budding feelings of jealousy and realization that she desires more than just a passing encounter with Hawke.

Poppy’s Internal Struggle:
As the moment becomes more intimate, Poppy is overwhelmed by both the physical sensations and the emotional conflict within her. She contemplates whether removing her mask would reveal too much of her true self, including the scars she carries from her past. These scars, both literal and emotional, are tied to her traumatic experiences and symbolize her fear of rejection and judgment.
“If I removed the facial covering, would he say what the Duke often did? That I was both a masterpiece and a tragedy?”
This shows Poppy’s deep insecurity about being both desired and flawed.

The Dagger and Hawke’s Reaction:
The mood shifts when Hawke discovers Poppy’s dagger, a bloodstone blade with a handle made of wolven bone. Hawke is impressed but also questions why she, a seemingly ordinary woman, would carry such a weapon. Poppy insists that she knows how to use it, which surprises and intrigues Hawke further.
“Now, I’m truly intrigued.”
Hawke’s fascination with Poppy deepens as he realizes she is not like most women in Solis.

Interruption by Kieran:
The tension is interrupted by Kieran, a friend and fellow guard, who calls for Hawke, signaling that an envoy has arrived with supplies. Hawke is reluctant to leave, and before he goes, he promises Poppy that he will return. Poppy, however, knows that she won’t be there when he comes back, realizing the fleeting nature of their encounter.
“I wouldn’t be here when he returned.”
This moment emphasizes Poppy’s understanding that this encounter with Hawke, while intense, cannot last.

Tawny and Poppy’s Friendship:
The chapter shifts as Poppy returns to her room and later discusses her adventure with Tawny, her closest friend and companion. Poppy shares the details of her visit to the Red Pearl but keeps her encounter with Hawke a secret. Tawny’s carefree attitude and curiosity about Poppy’s night show the contrast between Tawny’s more typical life and Poppy’s role as the Maiden.

Reflection on the Rite and Ascension:
As the conversation turns to the upcoming Rite and Ascension, Poppy’s fear returns. Tawny, ever the optimist, tries to convince Poppy that the Ascension is a blessing, a new beginning, but Poppy’s doubts remain. Poppy reflects on how different her Ascension will be compared to others and how little she knows about what it truly means to be “given to the gods.”

Summoned for a Cursed:
The chapter ends on a cliffhanger when Vikter, Poppy’s mentor, informs her that they’ve been summoned. The reason for the summons? A Cursed—a deadly creature that presents an immediate danger—has appeared.

Chapter 4 Recap - From Blood and Ash

Chapter 3 focuses on the somber duties that Poppy and Vikter perform as part of a secret network that provides dignity to those cursed by the Craven. This chapter delves into Poppy’s emotional and moral struggles while dealing with the pain of others and introduces new layers of responsibility and danger.

Leaving the Castle:
Poppy and Vikter sneak out of the castle using a secret servant's passage to meet Agnes, a woman whose husband, Marlowe, has been bitten by a Craven. The duo is part of a treasonous network that helps cursed individuals die with dignity. This service they provide is illegal, as those bitten by Craven are typically burned alive in public to prevent the curse from spreading. Despite the danger of their actions, they believe it's the humane thing to do.

Arriving at Agnes’ House:
The house is modest, filled with the pungent scent of decay covered by incense, hinting at the advanced state of Marlowe’s transformation into a Craven. When they enter, Poppy is immediately overwhelmed by Agnes' immense emotional pain, which she feels through her powers. Vikter introduces them as aid workers, and Agnes, filled with grief, explains that her husband returned after being gone for months. At first, he seemed only ill, but his condition deteriorated quickly, and he showed the signs of being cursed by the Craven.

Poppy’s Emotional Turmoil:
Poppy’s ability to sense and alleviate pain is central to this scene. The agony radiating from Agnes weighs heavily on her, and she helps alleviate some of Agnes' emotional suffering. This emotional exchange highlights Poppy’s struggle with her own powers, as helping others often takes a toll on her, mentally and physically.

Inside Marlowe’s Room:
As Poppy and Vikter enter the bedroom, they are greeted by the sight of Marlowe, who is barely recognizable due to the progression of the curse. His skin is gray, his body gaunt, and his teeth and nails have started to sharpen. The signs are clear: he’s moments away from turning into a full Craven. Poppy reflects on the cruelty of the curse and the Atlantians who created it. She debates internally about the brutal nature of the Craven curse, reminding herself of its origins and the destruction it brings.

The Final Goodbye:
Poppy speaks with Marlowe, who mistakes her for a deity, thinking she’s Rhain, the God of Endings. Poppy reveals herself as the Maiden and tells him her true name, Penellaphe. Marlowe, weak and resigned, asks her to end his suffering and give him a dignified death. He wants to be remembered as the man he was, not as the monster he’s becoming.

Poppy’s Forbidden Actions:
In a deeply emotional moment, Poppy removes her hood and mask, a gesture that defies the laws of her society but offers Marlowe comfort in his last moments. She uses her bloodstone dagger, a weapon capable of killing the cursed, and swiftly ends his life by stabbing him at the base of his skull. It’s a quick, merciful death, free from the horror of his full transformation into a Craven.

Ridley's Warning:
Before Marlowe dies, he warns Poppy that another Huntsman, Ridley, has also been bitten and may already be transforming. This information sets off alarm bells for Poppy as she realizes that Ridley could be a ticking time bomb in the dormitory where he resides. If he turns into a Craven there, it could result in a massacre, and the curse could spread even further.

Urgency to Act:
The chapter ends with Poppy hastily preparing to stop Ridley before it’s too late. The urgency to act quickly builds a sense of impending danger, as Poppy knows how rapidly the curse can spread and how devastating the consequences could be if Ridley turns in the dormitory.

Chapter 5 Recap - From Blood and Ash

Chapter 5 of From Blood and Ash focuses on Poppy and Vikter dealing with the aftermath of their secret mission to help the cursed. The chapter moves through emotional highs and lows, offering key insights into Poppy’s internal struggles, her complex relationship with her powers, and the oppressive control of the Ascended over her life.

Aftermath of Helping Agnes:
Poppy and Vikter leave Agnes mourning her husband's death, a tragic moment that leaves a lasting impact on Poppy. She can’t forget the image of Agnes holding her husband’s lifeless hand, brushing his hair—a reminder of the heavy emotional burden of their work.

They quickly move on to the house of Ridley’s father, following Marlowe’s warning that Ridley had been bitten by a Craven. At the house, Ridley’s father reveals that he had already taken care of his son by killing and burying him. This scene underscores the devastating impact of the Craven curse, not just on the victims but on their families. Poppy reflects on the heartache of these moments, even while feeling relieved that they didn’t arrive too late to prevent a worse tragedy.

Poppy’s Struggles and Vikter’s Confrontation:
In the forest, Poppy and Vikter discuss her actions during the mission, especially her use of her powers. Vikter, ever the protector, warns her that she’s taking unnecessary risks and accuses her of wanting to be caught. He fears that she’s subconsciously pushing the limits in hopes of being found unworthy of Ascension. This conversation is critical in showing Poppy’s deep internal conflict.
Vikter says: "I think you want to be caught.
Poppy responds: "What? You really think that?"

Vikter's words hit a nerve, making Poppy question her motives. While she outwardly dismisses his concerns, this moment reveals that she is struggling with the weight of her role as the Maiden and the fear of what her Ascension will bring.

Vikter also brings up her parents’ death, implying that Poppy’s need to help others stems from her inability to save her parents. This is a sensitive subject for Poppy, as it opens up old wounds and explains some of her recklessness. The conversation ends with Vikter warning Poppy that, regardless of her actions, she will still Ascend, but the Duke will punish her severely if she’s caught before then.

Poppy’s Preparations and Emotional Turmoil:
Later, Poppy tries to go about her normal routine, but she’s clearly distracted by her thoughts. When Rylan, one of her guards, finds her without her veil or shoes, it highlights how deeply affected she is by her earlier conversation with Vikter and the overall weight of her responsibilities. Poppy reflects on her fear of Ascension and the lack of control she has over her life. She’s forced into a role she never chose, which adds to her inner turmoil.

Confrontation with Lord Mazeen:
Poppy and Rylan are soon interrupted by Lord Mazeen, an Ascended who has a history of bullying Poppy. This scene is crucial because it shows how powerless Poppy feels around the Ascended. Lord Mazeen harasses Poppy, cornering her in a secluded space and making veiled threats. The conversation is loaded with tension, as Mazeen uses his power to intimidate Poppy.
Lord Mazeen says: "I’ve missed you."

Poppy responds, trying to maintain composure:
"It wasn’t my intention [to offend]."
The situation escalates when Mazeen touches Poppy, crossing boundaries and further asserting his control over her. Poppy’s inner thoughts reveal her deep desire to fight back, but she restrains herself out of fear of the consequences for both her and Vikter. This moment exemplifies the control and abuse of power that Poppy is subjected to, adding to her resentment of her role.

The Shocking Discovery:
The tense confrontation is interrupted by the sound of screams. Poppy and Rylan rush to investigate, and what they find is horrifying: a young servant woman lies dead, her neck twisted at an unnatural angle and puncture wounds visible. This discovery shocks Poppy and further sets the stage for the dangerous world she inhabits, filled with mysterious deaths and dark forces at play.

Chapter 6 Recap - From Blood and Ash

This chapter is highly intense and continues to build on the mysteries within From Blood and Ash, as Poppy deals with the aftermath of a brutal murder within Castle Teerman. The tension between mystery and danger continues to increase as the story progresses.

Lockdown and Speculations:
Following the discovery of Malessa’s body, Castle Teerman is locked down as everyone searches for the culprit or more victims. The atmosphere in the castle is tense, and both Poppy and her friends speculate about what or who could have caused such a brutal murder. Tawny suspects a Craven, but Poppy points out that the wound doesn’t match a Craven's usual bite marks, as there were only two puncture wounds, rather than the four elongated canines characteristic of Craven.

Poppy explains:
“The Craven have four elongated canines, but she only had two marks, as if two sharp fangs had penetrated her throat.”
This conversation highlights the unusual nature of the attack, adding layers to the growing mystery of who (or what) could be behind the murder.

Theories of an Atlantian:
As Poppy discusses the situation with Rylan and Tawny, they explore the possibility that the murder could have been committed by an Atlantian, not a Craven. Atlantians, while similar to mortals, have fangs and the ability to feed on blood, which aligns more closely with the strange nature of the attack. Poppy’s knowledge of Atlantians leads her to suspect that this could be the work of one of them, though this idea is both terrifying and difficult to prove.

Rylan comments:
“I’ve never seen anything like that,” further reinforcing the unique nature of the attack.
Poppy agrees, noting that the attack was too precise to be from a Craven or human, which implies something far more dangerous.
Vikter’s Return and Conversations:
When Vikter returns from assisting with the search, Poppy discusses her suspicions with him. Vikter acknowledges the strange nature of the murder and also doesn’t believe it was a Craven attack. He suggests that the Duke is trying to blame the incident on a Descenter, but both he and Poppy are skeptical, as the Descenters wouldn’t leave behind such wounds.

Vikter states:
“I’ve never seen anything like that,” echoing Rylan’s sentiment.
As Poppy and Vikter delve deeper into their theories, the idea that an Atlantian could be responsible becomes more convincing, though it also fills them with fear.

Lord Mazeen’s Harassment:
Another critical moment in this chapter involves the continued harassment Poppy faces from Lord Mazeen. Rylan informs Vikter of Mazeen’s behavior, and Vikter confronts Poppy about whether the Lord did anything inappropriate. Although Poppy tries to downplay the situation, her discomfort is evident, and it’s clear that Mazeen is a dangerous presence in her life. Vikter, always protective of Poppy, is frustrated by Mazeen’s actions but knows there’s little he can do about it.

Poppy admits:
“He did nothing other than be an annoyance,” although her internal thoughts reveal the deeper discomfort and fear she feels around Mazeen.
This conversation shows the oppressive control the Ascended have over Poppy’s life and how powerless she often feels in dealing with them.
Research into Atlantians:
After her conversations with Vikter, Poppy sneaks out early in the morning to find answers about Atlantians. She reads a book that confirms her suspicions—Atlantians have fangs and feed on blood, which fits the attack on Malessa. This scene is crucial as it reinforces Poppy’s growing belief that an Atlantian is responsible for the murder, adding to the looming threat within the castle.

The book notes:
“For a true Atlantian, two upper canines will form fangs, becoming elongated and sharpened.”
This information solidifies Poppy’s theory, but she still grapples with the fear and uncertainty of what this discovery means for the safety of everyone in the castle.
The Garden and Tragic Event:
Later, Poppy, seeking solace, takes a walk to the Queen’s Garden with Rylan. The garden has always been a place of peace for her, and the blooming of the night-blooming roses helps her relax. However, this brief respite is shattered when an arrow strikes Rylan, critically injuring him.

Rylan’s last words:
“Run,” he gasps, warning Poppy just before collapsing from his wound.
This moment is a shocking and tragic turn, leaving Poppy in immediate danger as she faces an unknown attacker. The chapter ends on a suspenseful note, leaving readers wondering who shot Rylan and what will happen to Poppy.

Chapter 7 Recap - From Blood and Ash

Chapter 7 from From Blood and Ash is a pivotal moment in the story, filled with intense action, loss, and the looming threat of danger for Poppy. Here’s a detailed recap with key scenes and conversations highlighted:

Rylan’s Death
The chapter opens with the heartbreaking death of Rylan, Poppy’s loyal guard, who is killed by an unknown assailant while the two are in the garden. Poppy’s shock is immediate, but her sorrow quickly transforms into rage as she tries to save Rylan, realizing she can no longer feel his pain through her powers—a clear sign that he is already dead. This moment is a devastating blow for Poppy, who has lost a trusted companion.

Poppy’s Fight with the Attacker
The action escalates as Poppy is confronted by the hooded assailant, whom she assumes to be a Descenter or possibly an Atlantian. This person orders her to comply, but Poppy, filled with fury and determination, refuses to go down easily. She recalls her training, and in a swift and calculated move, stabs the attacker with her dagger. However, her strike misses the heart, and the man retaliates with brutal punches, leaving Poppy momentarily stunned.
Despite the pain, Poppy continues to fight, showing her fierce spirit and resourcefulness. The attacker, now seriously wounded, eventually backs off after a whistle signals him to retreat. His parting words, “I’ll be seeing you again real soon,” add a chilling note, indicating that this is not the last encounter between them.

The Aftermath and Discovery
In the aftermath of the attack, Poppy is found by Vikter and other guards. She is in shock but manages to inform them about Rylan’s death. The chapter then shifts to a tense debriefing with Duchess Teerman, where the true gravity of the situation becomes clear. The Duchess orders the jacaranda trees, which have weakened the walls of the castle, to be torn down, believing that they facilitated the attack.

The Dark One’s Threat
In a conversation with the Duchess and Vikter, it’s revealed that the Dark One may be responsible for the attack. His signature—a promise to his followers that they will rise again—is found on the arrow that killed Rylan. The Duchess expresses concern that Poppy is now a direct target of the Dark One, heightening the stakes as they realize the looming threat is much closer than anticipated.

Emotional Impact on Poppy
The chapter delves into Poppy’s emotional state, where she processes the loss of Rylan and the severity of the situation. Her sense of responsibility for Rylan’s death is palpable, and she struggles with guilt over not being able to save him. Additionally, she reflects on how she narrowly escaped a similar fate, knowing that her training was what ultimately saved her.

Chapter 8 Recap - From Blood and Ash

Chapter 8 of From Blood and Ash continues to build tension and character development through key interactions and reflections. Here’s a detailed recap with important moments and conversations highlighted:

Poppy’s Conversation with Vikter:
The chapter begins with Poppy discussing the identity of her attacker in the garden with Vikter as he escorts her and Tawny back to her room. Poppy doesn’t believe the man she encountered was the Dark One, as he mentioned following someone else's orders. Vikter suspects the attacker may be a Descenter, adding to the growing threat that the kingdom faces.

Grief Over Rylan’s Death:
Poppy grapples with the guilt of Rylan’s death, wishing to attend his funeral despite the strict social protocols that forbid her from doing so. Vikter, while compassionate, tries to remind her that Rylan’s death wasn’t her fault, though he acknowledges that Rylan had grown complacent. This moment deepens Poppy’s emotional struggle, showing her connection to those who protect her and her determination to honor them.

Bathing and Reflection:
In a quieter moment, Poppy bathes and reflects on her scars, her mother’s rejection of Ascension, and her own fears about the future. These personal reflections reveal her deep insecurities, unresolved grief, and a vow to not let the Dark One take her. Poppy’s scars, both physical and emotional, are symbolic of her resilience and the burdens she carries as the Maiden.

Tawny and Poppy’s Heart-to-Heart:
Later, Tawny joins Poppy in her room, and the two share a heartfelt conversation. Tawny expresses her disbelief at the recent events, including the deaths of Malessa and Rylan, while also showing her support for Poppy. Their bond is further highlighted as Tawny admits that she’s glad she wasn’t present during the attack, knowing she wouldn’t have been able to defend herself like Poppy did.

Attending Rylan’s Funeral:
The chapter closes with a somber scene at Rylan’s funeral. Against protocol, Poppy attends, standing with Vikter and the Royal Guards as they honor their fallen comrade. The emotional weight of this moment shows Poppy’s defiance of the rigid rules imposed on her, her need for closure, and the respect she holds for those who serve her. The Commander of the Royal Guard, Griffith Jansen, leads the ceremony.

Hawke’s Arrival and Promise:
The tension rises when Hawke unexpectedly appears at Poppy’s side during the funeral. His arrival is significant as it reignites Poppy’s awareness of him after their earlier encounter at the Red Pearl. Vikter grudgingly allows Hawke to take over her protection for the time being, and Hawke reassures Poppy that she is safe with him. This scene subtly hints at the developing connection between Poppy and Hawke, as well as the mystery surrounding his true intentions.

Chapter 9 Recap - From Blood and Ash

In Chapter 9 of From Blood and Ash, we see a deeper exploration of Poppy's physical and emotional growth, as well as rising tension in her world.

Combat Training with Vikter:
The chapter opens with Poppy sparring with Vikter, her longtime mentor and personal guard. Their session is intense, and Poppy demonstrates her growing combat skills by catching Vikter off guard, holding a dagger to his throat. Though she claims victory, Vikter reminds her that the goal is not to "win" but to survive. This moment reinforces the theme of survival and the dangers that constantly surround Poppy. Their bond is highlighted through teasing banter, yet there's an underlying seriousness, as Vikter knows that Poppy’s life is increasingly at risk.
Notable Moment: Vikter tells Poppy that her "adventures" outside the castle need to end, especially after the attack in the garden. He's fully aware of her secret outings, despite her belief that she’d been stealthy. This shows his deep concern for her safety and his fatherly role in her life.

Hawke’s Rising Importance:
Hawke, a newer figure in Poppy’s life, becomes more prominent in this chapter. Poppy’s thoughts drift toward him, even in the midst of serious discussions. Although she tries to act indifferent, her attraction to him is undeniable, and Vikter, with his sharp insight, teases her about it. There is speculation that Hawke may become her personal guard, a possibility that unsettles Poppy. She fears that if he gets too close, he might recognize her as the girl from the Red Pearl, which could lead to disastrous consequences.
Notable Moment: Poppy’s internal conflict is evident as she worries about what would happen if Hawke recognized her. His skills and proximity to the Commander make him a viable candidate for the position, adding to her anxiety.

The Royal Court and Petitioners:
Later, Poppy attends a session in the Great Hall with the Duke and Duchess, where petitioners from the city come to air grievances and seek favor. One of the most emotional moments in the chapter is when a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Tulis, approach the Duke and Duchess with a heartbreaking plea. They’ve lost two sons and ask that their third and last surviving child be spared from the Rite, a religious ceremony where children are given to serve the gods. Their desperation is palpable as they beg to keep their son, but the Duke coldly denies their request, citing the natural order of things and the will of the gods.
Notable Moment: Poppy struggles to contain her emotions as she uses her gift to feel the couple’s grief. She is torn between following the rules of the Ascended and empathizing with the parents’ pain. Her gift, which allows her to sense the emotions of others, becomes overwhelming during this moment, showing how deeply affected she is by the situation.

Poppy’s Gift and Inner Conflict:
Throughout the chapter, Poppy's ability to sense emotions plays a significant role. When the Tulis family pleads for their child, she is overcome by their sorrow and nearly loses control of her gift.
