Prologue
In the prologue of A Shadow in the Ember, we are reintroduced to Seraphena (Sera) as she prepares for her fate as the promised Consort to the Primal of Death. The scene opens with her mother pressuring her not to fail in her duty. Sera, nervous and anxious, attempts to calm herself using breathing exercises she learned from Sir Holland, a mentor who trained her for this exact moment. She’s been groomed, bathed, and dressed to seduce the Primal of Death, fulfilling a deal made two centuries ago to save her kingdom of Lasania.
Sera’s gown is sheer and revealing, designed to entice the Primal. As she gazes at her reflection, her thoughts reveal a complex emotional state — she feels nervous and uneasy, despite knowing she has spent her entire life preparing for this moment.
Her mother, Queen Calliphe, enters the room and inspects her, adjusting her dress and placing the Veil of the Chosen over her head. This veil symbolizes her destiny, her role as the Maiden destined to serve a Primal. Unlike the other Chosen, her true fate is hidden from everyone but her immediate family and a few trusted individuals.
Tavius, her stepbrother and a cruel, arrogant man, mocks her nervousness, taunting her about the Primal’s rumored monstrous appearance and fangs. He knows Sera has been trained not only to be the Primal’s Consort but also to make him fall in love with her so she can kill him — a secret weapon hidden in the heart of the deal.
Sera, trained in combat, easily defends herself from Tavius’ unwelcome advances and threats, but she is still plagued with dread as the time for the Primal’s arrival draws near.
As Sera is led to the temple, she passes the silent Shadow Priests, men who have stitched their lips closed in dedication to their oath. Inside the dark temple, Sera takes her place on one of two thrones, waiting for the Primal. The tension rises as she sits alone, anxious and questioning whether he will even show up.
Finally, a rumble shakes the temple, and the air splits open with crackling light and mist, signaling the arrival of the Primal of Death. Shrouded in shadows and surrounded by ominous mist, the Primal appears before Sera. She tries to maintain the composure she was trained for, but real terror grips her as she faces him. He speaks only to say, “I have no need of a Consort,” before vanishing, leaving Sera stunned and abandoned.
Sera’s mother, furious and panicked, slaps her, accusing her of failing the kingdom. Sera is left devastated, confused, and feeling like everything has crumbled around her. The prologue ends with the chilling realization that the Primal has rejected her, and now, the fate of Lasania hangs in the balance, seemingly lost.

Chapter 1 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Setting: The Great Hall of Wayfair Castle (Three Years After the Failed Summoning)
The chapter opens in the Great Hall of Wayfair Castle, a grand and stately room filled with tension. The scene takes place during a negotiation between the royal family of Lasania and Lord Claus of the Vodina Isles. Sera (Seraphena), the protagonist, watches silently from the shadows as the Lord strides confidently down the center of the hall. He is a rough-hewn, sun-tanned man, clearly hardened by his lifestyle, and he carries a burlap sack—an ominous clue about how the conversation will unfold.

Characters in the Hall:

  • King Ernald sits on a jeweled throne, showing desperation and hope in his expression. The kingdom of Lasania is in decline, and Ernald seeks assistance.
  • Queen Calliphe, Sera’s mother, sits rigidly beside him. She shows no emotion, as she often does when dealing with state matters, but her sharp tone indicates disapproval of Lord Claus's presence.
  • Tavius, Sera’s cruel stepbrother, stands bored and uninterested, his mind likely elsewhere, revealing his irresponsibility.
  • Sera, hidden in an alcove, remains observant but detached, masking her true emotions and identity. She is no longer the promised Consort, having failed to secure the Primal of Death's affection three years earlier.
Tense Negotiations:
The Vodina Isles have been offered Lasania's allegiance in exchange for aid to combat the kingdom’s worsening agricultural crisis. However, Lord Claus’s presence already signals disdain. He doesn’t speak for royalty, and his actions show that he feels Lasania’s offer is beneath him. Queen Calliphe’s crisp voice cuts through the warm, oppressive air, making it clear she did not expect a response from someone so low in the hierarchy of the Vodina Isles.
Lord Claus’s silence is disrespectful, and he seems more interested in surveying the hall and its occupants, lingering suggestively on Sera despite her hiding in the shadows. His gaze is unwelcome, and Sera maintains a stoic expression as she watches the scene unfold, though her anger simmers below the surface.

A Shocking Act:
When Queen Calliphe presses him for an answer, Claus tosses the burlap sack he’s been holding. It hits the marble floor with a wet thud, revealing the severed head of Lord Sarros, the Advisor to the Queen and King. The grisly sight stuns the room. Tavius, shocked and disgusted, steps back, while Sir Holland, a knight and mentor to Sera, dryly comments on the unexpected violence.
Lord Claus then mocks the royal family, rejecting their offer. He cruelly suggests that Lasania’s allegiance is worthless. He even goes so far as to suggest that adding Sera (whom he believes is a mere handmaiden) to the deal might convince him to reconsider. Queen Calliphe coldly shuts down his vulgar proposal, but Claus's words sting. Sera remains outwardly unaffected, but internally, she suppresses her rage and the deep sense of being undervalued.

Queen Calliphe’s Command:
After Claus departs with mocking laughter, Queen Calliphe turns her attention to Sera. For the first time in years, she acknowledges her daughter directly, ordering her to "show them what a hot piece you are"—a degrading comment meant to push Sera to act. The queen’s words wound Sera, but instead of reacting emotionally, she sinks into the familiar numbness that has become her shield. Sera accepts her mother’s command without argument, letting herself become the cold, detached tool of vengeance she’s been trained to be.

Sera’s Mission:
Sera leaves the Great Hall with a clear purpose: to kill Lord Claus and send a message to the Vodina Isles. She quickly makes her way through the castle, slipping into the streets of Carsodonia under the cover of darkness. Her destination is the docks, where the Vodina Isles ship is moored.
Carsodonia, the capital of Lasania, is alive with activity, but Sera moves like a shadow, her years of training evident in her stealth. She is no longer the naïve girl from three years ago. Her steps are silent, her movements precise, and she reaches the docks unnoticed.

Confrontation with Lord Claus:
At the docks, Sera finds Lord Claus. His arrogance continues as he mistakes her presence for something sexual, assuming that she’s been sent to appease him. His lewd comments and crude behavior disgust Sera, but she remains calm. When Claus reaches for her, she reveals the true reason for her visit.
In a swift and brutal confrontation, Sera easily overpowers Claus, using the skills she honed under Sir Holland’s tutelage. Claus underestimates her, as most men do, and pays for it with his life. Sera kills him efficiently with her shadowstone dagger, severing his spine. The kill is clean, calculated, and almost emotionless—a testament to how hardened Sera has become.
After killing Claus, Sera cuts the ropes anchoring the Vodina Isles ship, letting it drift away as a final insult. The message is clear: Lasania may be struggling, but it is not defenseless.

Sera’s Reflection:
As she walks away from the docks, blood still staining her arms, Sera reflects on her life since the failed summoning three years ago. She was summoned as the Primal’s Consort on her 17th, 18th, and 20th birthdays, but the Primal of Death never came. Each rejection further isolated her from her family, especially her mother, who barely speaks to her now.
Sera’s sense of purpose, once tied to her destiny as the Primal’s Consort, has eroded, leaving her feeling hollow. Her mother’s neglect and her stepbrother Tavius’s cruel behavior have only deepened her loneliness. Sera no longer has a place in the world—she’s a failed Maiden, a rejected Consort, and a daughter forgotten by her own family.

A New Threat:
The chapter closes with Sera crossing the dark streets, heading towards the Golden Bridge, when she stumbles upon a chilling scene. In a courtyard, a goddess is using eather—the powerful essence of the gods—to kill a mortal man. The sight of the man’s glowing veins and his agonizing death fills Sera with horror and fury, especially when the goddess and her companion discard a baby’s body alongside the man.
Furious, Sera reaches for her dagger, prepared to fight the gods despite the odds. But before she can act, someone grabs her from behind, pinning her arms and covering her mouth. The chapter ends with Sera trapped, her fate uncertain.

Chapter 2 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

The chapter opens with Sera being grabbed by a mysterious man who pulls her away from the courtyard where she had just witnessed a group of gods slaughter a mortal and a baby. The male's voice, calm but commanding, warns Sera that if she had gone after the gods, it would have ended in her death. Despite her struggle to free herself, his strength and speed are overwhelming, and she is carried easily into a vine tunnel nearby.

Tension Between Sera and the Stranger:
As Sera tries to think of ways to escape, she begins analyzing her captor. He is tall, broad, and strong, with a cool touch that reminds her of cold water. Despite her attempts to kick him, he dodges her strikes with ease, finding her struggles amusing. His voice is calm, almost bored, and he continues to warn her that she’s acting impulsively and dangerously.
The mysterious man’s demeanor both frustrates and intrigues Sera. He suggests that she should be grateful because he saved her from being killed by the gods, but Sera is defiant, refusing to be grateful for something she didn’t ask for. The man, however, is unperturbed by her resistance and keeps her tightly restrained. When they hear the voices of the gods (Madis, Cressa, and Taric) nearby, Sera becomes still, listening to their conversation.
The gods discuss how they must be "close" and speak casually about what they’ve done, showing no remorse for the brutal murders. Sera silently repeats their names, ensuring she won’t forget who they are.

The Interaction Escalates:
Once the gods leave, the male who is holding Sera finally releases his hand from her mouth, but keeps his grip on her. He questions why she would even consider going after the gods. Sera, still furious, argues that they killed a child, and such an act should concern everyone. The man, however, calmly explains that the actions of gods are not for mortals to interfere with, adding that Sera should have known better. He suggests that she is reckless for trying to confront the gods.
Despite his calm demeanor, Sera remains defiant, demanding that he let her go. He warns her again that trying to fight the gods or running back to the scene will only get her killed. His voice is tinged with frustration, as he finds himself stuck helping someone who clearly doesn’t want his help. Sera is angry and rebellious, but there’s an underlying tension between them that suggests a growing connection.

An Intense Physical Struggle:
Sera tries to draw her dagger, but the man moves faster than she can react, trapping her between the wall and his body. He pins her wrists above her head, leaving her physically helpless. Despite her anger and frustration, Sera feels the intense presence of the man, noting how close they are—his cool skin against hers, his breath on her cheek. She can feel the sheer strength and power radiating from him.
As Sera struggles against him, she realizes that he is not just any man. When she finally looks up at his face, she sees silver eyes, glowing with eather—the essence of gods. This man is a god.

The God’s Revelation:
The god acknowledges that Sera knows the rules: mortals should not interfere with gods. But Sera, furious over the death of the baby, snaps back that the murder of innocents should concern everyone, including gods. The god responds with cold authority, telling her that the gods responsible will face consequences for their actions. His words are chilling, and Sera senses that he has the power to make them pay.
When the god senses the other gods approaching again, he acts quickly, pulling Sera against him and urging her to wrap her legs around his waist. His actions confuse Sera, but she complies, knowing that they need to avoid detection. The physical closeness is overwhelming, but the god reassures her by pressing his forehead to hers, maintaining a calm, almost intimate demeanor.

The Kiss:
To blend in and avoid suspicion, the god tells Sera to kiss him. Furious at being ordered, Sera kisses him aggressively, biting his lower lip in defiance. This only seems to excite the god, who deepens the kiss passionately. Sera is momentarily overwhelmed by the intensity of the kiss, feeling his fangs graze her lips, which both terrifies and thrills her.
The kiss is electrifying and unlike anything Sera has ever experienced. Despite the danger and the tension, she finds herself giving in to the moment. The god’s hands move possessively over her body, pulling her closer as the kiss intensifies. The kiss feels chaotic, powerful, and almost addictive. For Sera, it is a wild release of all the pent-up emotions and frustrations that have been building for years.
Aftermath of the Kiss:
After the gods pass by, the god pulls away, his forehead resting against hers as they catch their breath. He releases her from his hold, and for a brief moment, the two stand close together, sharing the aftermath of the intense kiss. The god, still calm and confident, remarks that she was “quite convincing,” hinting that the kiss was part of the act to avoid detection.
Sera, still reeling from the kiss, tries to regain her composure. The god teasingly apologizes for drawing blood from her lip during the kiss, adding that he wasn’t pretending to enjoy it. His flirtatious comment irritates Sera, but there’s an undeniable connection between them.

Sera’s Defiance:
Despite the strange encounter, Sera is not one to back down easily. When the god suggests that she should return home, Sera refuses, stating that she has her own plans. The god seems amused by her defiance but doesn’t stop her. As Sera walks away, she can feel the god watching her, and a part of her feels strange leaving him behind. There is an unexplainable pull between them, one that Sera can’t quite understand.
However, she forces herself to leave, determined to continue on her path, even though the encounter with the god has left a profound impact on her.
This chapter sets the stage for the complex dynamic between Sera and this mysterious god, as well as the dangerous world of gods and mortals she is navigating.

Chapter 3 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera's Tension with the Mysterious God Deepens:
The chapter begins with Sera walking away from the tunnel after her encounter with the god in Chapter 2. She feels unsettled, the sensation of wrongness lingering within her. Despite her discomfort, she continues toward the courtyard, prepared to find the bodies left behind by the gods. Surprisingly, the courtyard is now empty, with no traces of the bodies—just a patch of scorched earth where the mortal man had been.
As she takes in the scene, the god reappears without warning, startling Sera. He is still cloaked in shadows, wearing a sleeveless tunic with a silver band on his arm. His sudden appearance irritates Sera, especially as he seems amused by her reaction. Despite her annoyance, she notes how his presence makes her feel a strange sense of rightness, although she brushes it off as hunger.
The god explains that the scorched patch of earth is a result of the eather used by the goddess Cressa earlier. He seems to share Sera's curiosity about the deaths, and they decide to investigate the townhome together.

Exploring the Townhome:
The two enter the home silently, and Sera makes her way upstairs while the god investigates the sitting room. The home is eerily quiet, and Sera finds herself unsettled as she enters the child’s room, where a crib and a small blanket remain. The weight of the innocent life lost tugs at her, and she fights to suppress her emotions, reminding herself to feel nothing as a defense mechanism.
Sera discovers that the home likely belonged to a brother and sister, based on the items in the wardrobes. She wonders whether the woman, who might have been the baby’s mother, survived or had been killed elsewhere. The god, however, informs her that he found a charred section of the floor and a lone slipper downstairs, suggesting that the woman was also killed.
The dynamic between Sera and the god is still marked by tension and curiosity, as he quietly follows her through the house, seemingly always a step ahead of her. She realizes that he had been following the gods and is as interested in understanding the purpose of the murders as she is.

The God’s Insights:
As they continue investigating, Sera finds a property entailment document confirming that the owners were Galen Kazin and Magus Kazin, siblings. This discovery deepens her confusion about why the gods would kill them and the baby. The god reveals more disturbing information: this isn’t the first time gods have killed mortals in this manner. In the past month, similar murders have occurred, with the bodies either taken or left behind. The only commonality is that all the victims were from Lasania.
The god admits that one of the victims was someone he considered a friend, a revelation that surprises Sera. She begins to understand that gods, despite their immortality, can feel the loss of a mortal friend. The conversation between them becomes more personal, with Sera expressing sympathy for the god's loss.

Tension Escalates:
The conversation takes a darker turn when Sera questions why the god hadn’t stopped the murders earlier. He explains that he arrived too late to prevent them and had intended to capture one of the gods for questioning. However, he chose to help Sera instead, a decision he seems to regret. His words suggest frustration at his choice, leaving Sera to wonder if he blames her for interfering with his plans.
As the tension rises, the god steps closer to Sera, his presence intimidating. He warns her to leave this matter alone, implying that it’s far more dangerous than she realizes. However, Sera is defiant, insisting that only she can decide what involves her. This challenge provokes the god, and he moves with lightning speed, grabbing her chin in a cold but firm grip. The contact between them is electrifying, both literally and figuratively, as Sera feels a jolt of static across her skin.
The god’s question—"Are you afraid?"—hangs heavily in the air. Sera, determined not to show fear, lies, stating she’s only annoyed. The god, however, calls her out on the lie, sensing the fear she’s trying to hide.

A Dangerous Dance of Power:
Sera tries to assert her power by pulling her shadowstone dagger on the god, a rare weapon capable of harming gods. She presses it to his throat, asking if he’s afraid. The god is unfazed, even complimenting her bravery. However, he swiftly disarms her, pinning her to his chest with the dagger now aimed at her stomach. He warns her that she’s walking a dangerous line, suggesting that her reckless bravery could lead to her death.
The two engage in a tense and intimate struggle, with the god questioning why Sera seems so eager to rush toward death. Sera, caught off guard by his probing question, admits that she doesn’t know why she acts this way. Her recklessness, anger, and defiance have often gotten her into trouble, and she’s aware that her mouth and temper could lead to her downfall.
The god’s touch, though cold, is oddly comforting, and Sera finds herself conflicted between fear and the strange pull she feels toward him. Despite the dangerous situation, she remains defiant, refusing to let him control her.

The God’s Warning:
As the chapter ends, the god finally releases Sera, stepping away but leaving her with a chilling warning. He tells her to be careful and that he’ll be watching her, hinting that their connection isn’t over and that he’s keeping a close eye on her actions.
This chapter deepens the relationship between Sera and the mysterious god, building tension and intrigue as they navigate the dangerous world of gods and mortals.

Chapter 4 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera's Training and Internal Struggles:
The chapter opens with Sera in the midst of intense training with Sir Holland, honing her combat skills while blindfolded. She successfully disarms him and lands a hit, though Sir Holland critiques her for not aiming precisely for the heart. Despite her success, he stresses the importance of precision, not just for survival but for the honor that comes with delivering a swift and dignified death, even to enemies.
Sera, however, questions why she should care about an "honorable" death for those who try to kill her, especially since her life is constantly in danger due to her unique and largely hidden identity as a Princess with Mierel blood. Sir Holland reminds her that many enemies are often shaped by circumstances beyond their control, a fact that Sera should be more empathetic toward, considering her own precarious position.

The Weight of Expectations:
The conversation quickly shifts to the many threats looming over Sera’s life, including the growing Rot that’s consuming Lasania, her strained relationship with Tavius (who is still furious over an incident in the stables), and the pressure she feels to stop the Rot—a duty that had been thrust upon her since birth.
Sera reflects on how she was once the Maiden destined to be claimed by the Primal of Death in exchange for saving Lasania from the Rot, but he never took her. Her failure to fulfill her role as Consort weighs heavily on her, making her feel like she’s been judged unworthy. She reveals to Sir Holland the toll this has taken on her mentally and emotionally. The conversation reveals Sera’s deep frustration and shame, not just over the Rot, but over her failed destiny and her inability to stop the kingdom's inevitable decline.

Sera's Encounter with the God Lingers:
Sera’s mind drifts back to her mysterious encounter with the god (from the previous chapters), a meeting that has left her both confused and intrigued. She still cannot make sense of why the god kissed her or why she felt a sense of rightness in his presence. Even though she knows it’s reckless, part of her almost anticipates meeting him again.

A Deeper Reflection on Her Role:
In a heated moment, Sera questions the entire point of her daily training with Sir Holland. She admits that everything she does is underpinned by the expectation that she will stop the Rot and save Lasania—a task that has consumed her since birth. Sir Holland offers reassurance, telling her she’s not unworthy and that she still carries hope within her, though Sera remains unconvinced.
Sera confides her belief that the Primal of Death rejected her because he saw something inside her that deemed her unworthy. She wonders if her rejection was due to a hidden aspect of her nature or her gift, which may have frightened him.

Sera’s Gift and Her Connection to Death: We also see hints of Sera’s secret gift, one that allows her to manipulate life and death—a power she’s had since childhood. She reflects on how using it too freely could draw the attention of the Primal of Death, though it hasn’t happened yet. Sir Holland doesn’t seem to know the full extent of her ability, but Odetta, her old nursemaid, certainly does.

Odetta's Warning:
Later, Sera visits Odetta, who has been a mother figure to her despite never being particularly affectionate. Odetta is frail and near death, which unnerves Sera, especially as she fears losing the woman who’s been the closest thing to family for her. As Sera sits by her side, she asks Odetta about a statement she made years ago—that Sera had been touched by both life and death. Odetta’s answer is cryptic, telling her that only the Fates know the meaning of those words, as they were the ones who made that claim upon Sera’s birth/
This chapter delves into Sera's internal conflict, exploring her feelings of failure, shame, and self-doubt, while also building intrigue around her mysterious powers and her unresolved connection to the Primal of Death.

Chapter 5 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera’s Encounter with Her Mother, the Queen:
The chapter opens with Sera entering the Queen’s private sitting room, a place she isn’t often welcome. She reflects on her father, King Lamont Mierel, whose portrait hangs in the room. Though Sera never met him, she feels a complicated mix of grief, anger, and abandonment because her father died shortly after her birth by leaping from a tower. Sera wonders if her birth, a reminder of the deal struck between her ancestors and the Primals, contributed to her father's despair.
Sera’s reflections are interrupted when Queen Calliphe, her mother, enters the room. Tension fills the air as the Queen questions why Sera is there, addressing her not as a daughter but as a mere handmaiden. The Queen expresses her disappointment, blaming Sera for the suffering of their people, alluding to Sera’s failure to fulfill her destiny as the Primal of Death’s Consort.
The emotional distance between Sera and her mother is painfully evident. The Queen's harsh words sting Sera, especially when she accuses Sera of being the reason Lasania is suffering, reinforcing Sera’s feelings of failure. Despite Sera’s anger and pain, she bites back more scathing comments, realizing how little her mother cares for her presence. Their strained relationship is painfully clear as the Queen dismisses Sera coldly.

Sera’s Nighttime Walk and the Pull of Death:
After the tense encounter with her mother, Sera leaves the castle and wanders the streets of Carsodonia, trying to escape her turbulent emotions. She walks aimlessly through the city, ending up near the Temple of Phanos, where she feels the pull of death. Her strange ability to sense recent death fills her with warmth and energy, compelling her to move forward, even though she knows she shouldn’t.
As Sera walks, she sees Madis, the god who killed the babe in the previous chapters. She contemplates striking him with her dagger, feeling the overwhelming urge for vengeance. However, she hesitates, remembering the silver-eyed god’s words about her reckless attraction to danger. Her hesitation allows Madis to slip away, leaving Sera frustrated.

Discovery of Andreia’s Death:
Following the sense of death she had earlier, Sera finds herself at the home of Andreia Joanis, the seamstress who had delivered a gown to the Queen earlier. Sera’s heart sinks as she enters Andreia’s home and smells the unmistakable scent of burnt flesh. Inside, she discovers Andreia’s body, horrifically mutilated with her eyes burned out in a strange, wing-like pattern.
As Sera processes the brutal scene, she suddenly senses someone behind her. Acting on instinct, she turns and stabs the intruder with her shadowstone dagger, only to realize that she has stabbed the silver-eyed god—the very one who had saved her before. Her heart races as she realizes the grave mistake she’s made: she’s stabbed a god, and not just any god, but the one who seems to hold a mysterious interest in her.

This chapter further develops Sera’s emotional turmoil, highlighting her complicated relationships with her family and her growing entanglement with the gods, particularly the silver-eyed god who seems to be playing a larger role in her life.

Chapter 6 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera Stabs the Silver-Eyed God:
The chapter opens with Sera in shock after realizing she has stabbed the silver-eyed god in the chest. Though shadowstone is deadly to gods, the silver-eyed god seems barely affected, though he acknowledges that the wound "stung." Sera is terrified but also frustrated as the god seems more annoyed than angry. The two exchange heated words, with Sera unapologetically defending her actions, arguing that he startled her, and the god destroying her dagger in response to avoid being stabbed again.
Their banter reveals the underlying tension between them, laced with hints of humor. Despite the danger, Sera's boldness shines through as she even threatens to stab him again, though it's clear neither is truly angry—more intrigued by the other. The god remarks that Sera is "trouble" but refrains from hurting her, showing that he's far from ordinary in both strength and behavior. He questions her fear, remarking that while she feels terror, she isn’t truly terrified—a point that further mystifies him.

The Mystery of Andreia’s Death:
The conversation shifts as they return their focus to the body of the seamstress, Andreia Joanis, who had been murdered in her home. The god explains that he arrived too late to stop Madis, the god responsible for her death. Sera admits she followed Madis after seeing him leave Andreia’s house, though she did not notice the silver-eyed god enter.
Their interaction becomes more serious as they discuss the mysterious killings, with the god confirming that Andreia's death seems connected to the earlier murders of the Kazin siblings. Sera questions him about the workings of gods, Primals, and the fate of mortals killed in this manner. He reveals that those who die like Andreia don’t pass into the Shadowlands; they simply cease to exist, a fate worse than even the Abyss.

Andreia’s Resurrection and Attack:
The calm is shattered when Andreia’s body suddenly reanimates, sitting up with her eyes burned out and her mouth now sporting four long fangs. Both Sera and the god are shocked. Andreia, no longer fully human, hisses and snarls, attacking them. The god quickly dispatches her with his shadowstone sword, but not before Sera is left stunned by the sheer speed and viciousness of the attack.
As Andreia’s body crumbles to ash, the god admits he has never seen anything like this before. He suspects that Madis did more than just kill Andreia—he altered her somehow, turning her into this monstrous being. The god warns Sera to keep what she’s witnessed to herself before taking his leave, calling her liessa once more.

The Meaning of "Liessa":
Before leaving, Sera finally asks what "liessa" means. The god’s answer is cryptic but significant: it has many meanings, all of them relating to something "beautiful and powerful." The implication of this term, used by a god, suggests that Sera is more important than she realizes.

This chapter pushes Sera deeper into the supernatural intrigue while strengthening the bond between her and the silver-eyed god, whose intentions remain unclear but seem increasingly protective.

Chapter 7 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Training and Reflection:
The chapter begins with Sera continuing her training in the east tower under the guidance of Sir Holland, practicing blindfolded with an iron blade. Sera is still reeling from the events of the previous night when she stabbed the silver-eyed god and witnessed the strange resurrection of Andreia Joanis. While trying to focus on training, her thoughts drift to the destroyed shadowstone dagger and the god's cryptic words, especially his calling her "liessa," meaning something beautiful and powerful.
Sera finally asks Sir Holland a veiled question about whether he’s ever heard of someone coming back to life with fangs, like what she saw happen to Andreia. Sir Holland has never heard of such a thing, calling it an “abomination,” further deepening the mystery surrounding the event. Just as Sera is about to press him for more, Princess Ezmeria (Ezra) arrives, seeking Sera’s help with a situation involving an orphaned child.

Ezra’s Request:
Ezra, who is always composed and clever, asks Sera to help with a delicate situation. A young girl named Ellie has come under the care of Lady Sunders, who runs an orphanage. Ellie’s brother, however, remains in a precarious situation with their father, a man named Nor, who has been forcing his children into unspeakable acts for survival. Ezra explains that Sera’s unique skills are needed to extract the boy from his father, who resides in a dangerous part of Carsodonia known as Croft’s Cross.
Ezra reveals that Nor has been using his children to sustain his vices, even forcing them into thievery and other darker activities. With Ellie now safe, the task remains to rescue her brother from Nor’s grasp. Ezra believes that Sera can get close to Nor under the guise of someone seeking employment in his illicit operations.

Sera’s Reluctance and Agreement:
Though hesitant, Sera agrees to help. She plans to disguise herself to gain access to Nor's world and rescue the boy. However, Ezra warns her to wear something she isn’t worried about getting bloody, hinting that the mission might not go as smoothly as Sera hopes. Despite Sera's intention to avoid violence, Ezra’s calm but knowing demeanor suggests that the situation may escalate beyond a simple extraction.

This chapter shifts from supernatural intrigue to a more personal and immediate mission, deepening Sera's role as someone who can navigate both the physical dangers of her world and the larger, mysterious forces at play.

Chapter 8 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera’s Mission:
The chapter begins with Sera and Ezra traveling in a black carriage towards Croft’s Cross, a dangerous and poverty-stricken district of Carsodonia. They are on a mission to extract a young boy named Nate from the clutches of his abusive father, Nor. The scene is set against the backdrop of dilapidated buildings, where overcrowded conditions and the Rot plague the city. Despite the discomfort of the heat, Sera and Ezra maintain a banter that lightens the tension of their grim task.
Ezra, who is often calm and composed, reassures Sera that Lady Marisol (who is driving the carriage) will keep an eye out and make sure nothing goes awry. Sera is dressed provocatively to gain access to Nor’s den, where he runs his illicit operations. As they arrive, Ezra warns Sera to be careful, knowing full well the potential dangers of the mission.

The Confrontation with Nor:
Sera enters Nor’s building, finding herself in a grimy, smoke-filled den. Nor is immediately repulsive, his manner oozing with misogyny and cruelty. Sera adopts a submissive persona, playing along with Nor’s expectations while looking for an opportunity to rescue Nate. Nor’s abuse is apparent not only in the way he treats Sera but also in the condition of the women and children under his control. Sera notes how beaten down both physically and mentally they are, particularly Molly, one of Nor’s victims.
Eventually, Nor becomes crude, pulling Sera into his lap and hinting at the abuse she would face if he decided to keep her. This is the moment when Sera acts. Using the skills she’s honed for years, she discreetly retrieves her iron blade from her boot and, with swift precision, slashes Nor’s throat, ending his life. Despite the brutality of the act, Sera feels nothing but disgust and detachment, a clear indication of her internal conflict and the lengths she is willing to go to save others.

The Rescue:
After dealing with Nor, Sera finds Nate hiding in a back room. Though hesitant at first, Nate eventually trusts Sera when she convinces him that his sister Ellie is safe with the Ladies of Mercy. With Nate now in her care, Sera leads him out of the den, ensuring he doesn’t see his father’s body. As they leave, Sera hands a bag of coins to Molly, advising her to get away from the building quickly, implying that trouble will soon follow Nor’s death.

Reuniting with Ezra:
Back in the carriage with Ezra and Nate, Sera reflects on the mission. Ezra immediately notices the bloodstains on Sera’s gown and correctly guesses that Nor has met a violent end. Sera brushes it off with dark humor, saying that Nor simply "slipped and fell" on her blade. Ezra, ever astute, notes that such incidents tend to happen frequently around Sera, hinting at her dangerous life and the violent situations she often finds herself in. The chapter closes with a light-hearted moment between the stepsisters, with Ezra admitting that Sera frightens her "a little."

This chapter highlights Sera’s resourcefulness and willingness to kill when necessary, revealing more about her character’s complexity as she navigates both personal and societal challenges in her quest to protect the vulnerable.

Chapter 9 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera's Internal Struggle:
The chapter opens with Sera walking through a forest towards a lake, haunted by her recent actions. She wrestles with her emotions after killing Nor, feeling detached yet slightly disturbed by the ease with which she took his life. Despite trying to distract herself by recalling the joy on Nate's face after being reunited with his sister, Ellie, at the orphanage, she can’t shake the question lingering in her mind: “What is wrong with you?” Sera grapples with the heavy toll her role as a killer has placed on her, with fourteen lives already ended by her hand, including some on her mother’s orders.
Her thoughts spiral as she walks deeper into the Dark Elms, a forest known for its dangerous wildlife. While reflecting on her inner turmoil, Sera encounters a kiyou wolf, an enormous and majestic creature, wounded by an arrow and struggling to survive. Unlike with humans, Sera feels a deep sense of sorrow for the animal and taps into her mysterious gift of life, a power she rarely uses.

Sera's Gift:
Sera removes the arrow from the wolf’s chest and channels her life-giving ability, healing the animal. The wolf, seemingly dead moments before, regains life and even licks Sera’s hand before running off into the forest. This event reminds her of her past experiences with her gift, including when she revived a barn cat named Butters when she was a child.
Sera reflects on the weight of her gift and the responsibility that comes with it. She understands that using this power on animals is one thing, but using it on humans could upset the balance of life and death. The possibility that her gift might have come from the Primal of LifeKolis, the King of Gods—adds to her uncertainty. As she questions whether her power had influenced the Primal of Death's decision to abandon her as his Consort, Sera is caught between feeling blessed and cursed by her abilities.

A Moment of Release:
Seeking solace, Sera continues her journey toward a tranquil lake deep within the forest. This lake serves as a rare place of peace for her, a sanctuary where she can escape the burdens of her life. She strips off her bloodstained gown and slips into the cool water, feeling the tension leave her body as she floats in the lake’s embrace. For a few precious moments, Sera allows herself to exist without the weight of her responsibilities, failures, or violence.
However, this brief respite is interrupted by a sudden and unsettling awareness that she is no longer alone. Despite her efforts to find peace in the water, Sera senses that someone is watching her, triggering her instinctive need for self-defense. She reaches for her blade, only to realize that she has left it on the shore, leaving her vulnerable to whatever or whoever is lurking nearby.

This chapter delves deeply into Sera’s emotional and psychological state, providing more insight into her powers and her struggle with the consequences of her actions. It sets the stage for further exploration of her abilities and the looming mystery of who—or what—might be watching her.

Chapter 10 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera’s Unexpected Encounter:
The chapter begins with Sera still in the lake, feeling the unsettling sensation of being watched. Her instincts tell her she is no longer alone, and when she demands the intruder to reveal themselves, a familiar figure steps out from behind the waterfall. It’s Ash, the mysterious god she had encountered before, sending Sera’s heart into a mix of shock and anger.
Ash casually explains that he was at the lake first, having come for a swim, and did not expect her to arrive. Though his manner is calm and teasing, Sera is furious that he had seen her naked in the water. Ash’s responses are as infuriating as ever, filled with amusement and sly remarks, leading to an exchange of sharp words between them. He even describes Sera as looking like a “goddess made of silver and moonbeams,” a comment that flusters her despite her anger.

Tension and Attraction:
Despite the heated conversation, there is a palpable attraction between Sera and Ash. His teasing tone and calm demeanor contrast with her fiery frustration. Their banter is laced with tension, particularly as Ash makes several flirtatious comments, acknowledging her strength and bravery in a way that surprises her. Sera tries to maintain her composure, but Ash’s presence and his unexpected compliments catch her off guard.
However, Sera is determined to keep her guard up. She threatens to harm Ash if he continues to provoke her, but he only laughs, finding her threats amusing. His amusement at her defiance only fuels her frustration, and their dynamic continues to oscillate between tension and a strange connection that neither of them seems to fully understand.

A New Threat Emerges:
As their conversation continues, Ash suddenly becomes serious. He warns Sera that they are not alone in the woods, and though she initially dismisses the sounds as spirits, Ash insists that something more dangerous is approaching. He draws his sword, preparing for what’s to come, while Sera remains skeptical, pointing out that no one enters the Dark Elms except for gods and spirits. But Ash hints that the threat they are facing is neither mortal nor spirit.
Suddenly, from the shadowy depths of the forest, a figure cloaked in black emerges. Sera realizes that whatever is approaching is far more sinister than a mere spirit. As the chapter closes, the stage is set for an imminent confrontation, with Ash and Sera bracing themselves for the unknown.

This chapter builds on the tension between Sera and Ash while setting the stage for an upcoming danger, leaving the reader eager to see how they will face the looming threat together.

Chapter 11 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

The Encounter with the Hunters:
Chapter 11 opens with Sera and Ash facing a terrifying group of creatures known as Gyrms, specifically a type called Hunters. These beings, with deathly pallor, eyeless faces, and grotesque, stitched mouths, seem otherworldly and unnerving. When Sera asks why they are there, Ash cryptically responds that the Hunters are likely looking for something, though he does not know exactly what.
The fight begins, and Ash quickly dispatches two of the Hunters with his sword, their bodies collapsing into ash. Sera, refusing to stand idly by, joins the battle despite Ash’s insistence that she leave. Armed with a dagger, Sera attacks one of the Hunters to prevent it from stabbing Ash, and though she strikes a heavy blow, the creature does not fall.
During the battle, Ash offers some snarky commentary, amused by Sera’s persistence in fighting in her sheer slip, even commenting on how it distracts him. Despite the peril, their banter continues, showcasing the undeniable tension between them. As they fight side by side, Ash tells Sera that the only way to kill the Hunters is by decapitating them or destroying their hearts.

A Horrifying Discovery:
Sera faces off against a Hunter who reveals something truly terrifying. Its stitched mouth splits open, releasing a mass of writhing serpents. Sera, who harbors a deep fear of snakes, is frozen in horror but manages to kill the creature by stabbing it in the chest. After the battle, Ash approaches her to make sure she wasn’t bitten by the snakes, and they exchange some humorous remarks as Sera tries to shake off her fear.

An Accident and a Confession:
In her haste to escape a real snake, Sera slips and hits her head, knocking herself out. She awakens with her head resting on Ash’s thigh, groggy but quickly recovering. In her dazed state, she blurts out that Ash is “beautiful,” much to her own embarrassment once she fully regains her senses. Ash, amused by her compliment, checks on her to make sure she’s not seriously injured. Their conversation, though lighthearted, grows more intimate as Ash gently touches Sera’s arm, a rare moment of tenderness that catches her off guard.

Revelations About the Gyrms and the Past:
As they talk, Ash explains more about the Gyrms. These creatures, once mortal, became Hunters and Seekers after offering eternal servitude to a god. The stitched mouths are a sign of their loyalty to the god or Primal they serve. Ash also reveals that the serpents are part of their transformation, replacing their insides. Sera is horrified but asks if the same fate befalls the Priests, who also have stitched mouths. Ash confirms that the Priests, who serve Primals, share a similar fate, though they are more mortal than the Hunters.
Their conversation shifts as Ash casually continues to touch Sera’s arm, a gesture that deeply affects her. She realizes how starved she is for affection and touch, but she also grows uncomfortable with the intimacy, unsure of how to process her feelings.

Ash’s Secrets:
Ash hints that the Hunters may have been sent to find him, as he has many enemies. When Sera presses him for details, he deflects with a mysterious comment about the politics and conflicts between gods and Primals. He also reveals that what is written about the gods and Primals in history books is not always accurate. Some Primals are far younger than mortals believe, while some gods have existed for far longer than the Primals.

Tension Builds Between Sera and Ash:
The chapter ends with Ash touching Sera’s arm, which she finds both grounding and unsettling. When she asks why he stayed with her after she was injured, he responds that it would have been rude to leave her unconscious. Sera, growing increasingly flustered, accuses him of being a “polite pervert,” while Ash teases her for not leaving either, suggesting that perhaps she enjoys his company more than she lets on.

This chapter continues to build the tension between Sera and Ash while introducing more mysteries about the world of gods, Primals, and their servants. The mix of danger, humor, and intimacy keeps the reader engaged, eager to see how their relationship will develop and what new challenges they will face.

Chapter 12 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

The Pull Between Sera and Ash:
Chapter 12 opens with the tension between Sera and Ash reaching new heights. They both acknowledge their mutual interest, though Sera hesitates to admit it fully. Ash teases her, saying that they are both still there because they are intrigued by each other. Sera internally struggles, questioning why she feels this pull toward Ash, especially since he’s a god, someone far beyond her world.
Despite Sera’s internal conflict, she can’t deny the growing attraction. Ash, in his usual confident manner, points out how he’s fascinated by her directness and lack of filter between thought and speech—a quality he seems to admire in her.

Ash’s Confession:
The conversation takes a more serious turn when Ash shares a vulnerable part of his past, admitting that the first time he killed someone, it had been a close friend who had told him to "Do it." Sera is shaken by this revelation, and though she doesn't ask for details, she feels compassion for the burden he carries. Ash reveals that it was necessary to kill his friend to save many others, but the experience left a lasting scar on him.
Sera, still processing this intimate confession, tries to lighten the mood by admitting that she hates wearing gowns, which catches Ash off guard and leads to a brief, lighthearted moment.

Further Insight into Ash’s World:
Sera then asks Ash if he’s discovered anything more about why the three gods are killing mortals. He admits that he’s still tracking them but can’t pry too much without drawing attention. The conversation shifts to Ash’s friend, Lathan, who had been killed by the gods. Though his body had been left intact, unlike the seamstress Sera had witnessed the previous night, the loss still weighs heavily on Ash.
Ash offers a poetic and somewhat dark comparison between Sera and a flower from the Shadowlands, a deadly yet beautiful plant that releases poisonous needles when it opens. He describes the flower’s delicate appearance but deadly nature, which he uses as a metaphor for Sera’s resilient and unpredictable spirit. Sera is flattered, albeit a bit taken aback, by the comparison.

Tension and Intimacy:
Their conversation deepens further as Ash talks about the Shadowlands and Iliseeum, revealing more about the realms of the gods. He mentions the Vale, a paradise within the Shadowlands, though he doesn’t share what it looks like, claiming that no one can reveal its secrets—not even to other gods or Primals. Sera is fascinated, realizing just how little she knows about Ash’s world, even though she had once been destined to be the Primal of Death’s Consort.
As the night wears on, the playful banter returns. Ash touches Sera’s hair, untangling a curl, and they share more teasing remarks. He admits that he’s intrigued by her bravery and directness, and Sera, despite her initial reservations, finds herself growing more comfortable in his presence.

The Confession of Desire:
The chapter reaches a pivotal moment when Ash admits that he wants to kiss Sera, not because of any obligation or reason, but simply because he desires it. Sera is momentarily caught off guard, but the idea of kissing him stirs a longing within her—a desire to feel wanted, to be kissed, and to escape the burden of who she’s supposed to be. She wrestles with her identity as the failed Maiden and the would-be Consort but ultimately decides to let herself live in the moment.

As the chapter closes, Sera gives in to her emotions and tells Ash to kiss her, setting the stage for a deepening of their connection. This chapter continues to build the tension between Sera and Ash, blending moments of vulnerability, intimacy, and intrigue as their relationship deepens. It leaves the reader eager to see how their connection will evolve and what consequences may arise from their growing closeness.

Chapter 13 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera and Ash's Passion Chapter 13 picks up right after Sera tells Ash to kiss her. This moment of intimacy between them escalates rapidly, filled with sensuality and desire. Sera is caught between fear and excitement as Ash's kisses and touch stir feelings she has never experienced before. The kiss begins softly, but Ash’s passion quickly deepens, revealing his need for her, while his fangs and cold touch serve as a reminder that he is not human—he’s a god. Ash kisses Sera with intensity, and the two of them lose themselves in the moment. His cool hands explore her body, making her feel both powerful and desired. Sera revels in how affected Ash seems by her, astonished that a god could be so captivated by her touch. As they continue to kiss, Ash’s hands grow bolder, skimming up her legs and hips, while Sera finds herself wanting more.

A Growing Connection:
Sera feels no hesitation, only a wild, reckless desire as their connection intensifies. Ash’s hands wander, teasing her body, and Sera enjoys the sensation of being wanted so deeply. Ash asks her to show him what she likes, and Sera, for the first time, takes control of the moment, guiding his hands to her most sensitive areas.
As Ash’s fingers touch and pleasure her, the scene becomes a heated, intimate exploration of desire and passion. Their chemistry is undeniable, and for a brief moment, Sera forgets her reality—who she is and what her duty entails. She is consumed by the sensation of Ash’s touch and the overwhelming pleasure he gives her.

The Consequences of Desire:
However, just as the tension between them reaches its peak, Ash pulls back slightly, showing restraint. Despite his own desire, he tells Sera that going further would lead to regret, hinting that the consequences could be much greater than either of them wants. While Sera tries to challenge his restraint, Ash gently reminds her that engaging in such an intimate act may lead to something neither of them can undo.
Sera is taken aback by Ash’s self-control and even more surprised when he admits that he doesn’t have much experience with intimacy. The revelation shocks her, as she hadn’t expected a god to admit something so personal and vulnerable. Despite his restraint, Ash still teases her with tender kisses, bringing their moment of passion to a slow, gentle end.

A Farewell with Unspoken Feelings:
As their time together comes to a close, Ash prepares to leave. He kisses Sera’s forehead and straightens her hair with surprising tenderness, hinting at a deeper connection that neither of them fully understands. Sera feels an odd sense of loss as he departs, sensing that this might be the last time they share such a moment.
Before he leaves, Ash advises Sera to head home soon and be careful. His words seem to come from a place of concern, leaving Sera with mixed emotions. She is struck by how much she’s opened up to Ash, not just physically but emotionally as well. There’s a sense that they’ve both shared something meaningful, and Sera is left wondering if she will ever see him again.
As the chapter ends, the sounds of the forest return, signaling a return to normalcy. But for Sera, nothing feels the same. The night has been transformative, and the connection she formed with Ash lingers in her heart.
This chapter highlights the growing bond between Sera and Ash, blending intense physical attraction with emotional vulnerability. Their relationship continues to evolve, leaving the reader eager to see how it will develop and what challenges they may face next.

Chapter 14 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Ezra's Visit (Sera’s Bedchamber, Morning)
Location: Sera’s bedchamber in Wayfair Castle, overlooking the Dark Elms.
Ezra, Sera’s stepsister, comes to discuss a riot that took place the previous night in Croft’s Cross, sparked by protests against the Crown's lack of action to stop the spread of the Rot. Six people were killed, many injured, and fires destroyed homes. Some people claim the guards set the fires. This paints a picture of the growing unrest in Lasania. Ezra criticizes the guards for escalating the situation and notes the King’s late plans to address the unrest. Tavius, the heir, is absent, taking no part in the turmoil. Sera’s modest room is described, noting its stark contrast to the luxurious quarters of Ezra and Tavius, reflecting her outsider status in the royal family. The Dark Elms visible from her window serve as a reminder of the recent encounter with Ash. Sera tries to focus on the present but is distracted by memories of the previous night by the lake and her interaction with Ash. Ezra expresses frustration with the royal family’s inaction, and Sera points out Ezra would be a better ruler than Tavius because she actually cares about the people.
Sera’s Preparation to Leave (Sera’s Bedchamber)
Sera chooses not to join Ezra in helping with the riot aftermath, deciding instead to check on the Couper family, farmers affected by the Rot. She reflects on the differences between herself and Tavius and gears up for her visit, arming herself with blades (one in her boot and one on her thigh) as she dresses in a plain brown skirt and white blouse. This moment highlights her independent and practical nature, preparing herself for any situation, reflecting her need to protect herself in an uncertain world.

The Castle Kitchens
Location: Castle kitchens, Wayfair Castle.
Sera heads to the kitchens to gather food for the Coupers and others affected by the Rot. She interacts with Orlano, the gruff cook, who begrudgingly offers her bruised apples and potatoes that are close to going bad. This is a brief moment of levity in the chapter, showing Sera’s rapport with Orlano and the servants. Orlano hints at nobles arriving for an upcoming Rite, adding tension as the Crown is preparing for festivities while the people suffer. Sera grabs the food, recognizing the glaring disparity between the preparations for the Rite and the struggles of the common people. The brief conversation shows class tensions in the kingdom, with food being set aside for feasts while commoners starve.

The Walk to the Couper Farm (Outside Wayfair Castle)
Location: Road to the Couper Farm.
Sera walks along a dusty hill lined with oak trees, carrying her sack of food. The morning sun makes the journey uncomfortable, with sweat forming on her brow as she pulls her hood lower to shield herself from the heat. She reflects on her encounter with Ash by the lake the previous night, feeling no regret for what happened but acknowledging that it was likely a one-time experience. She finds herself distracted by thoughts of Ash’s touch. The landscape changes as she approaches the Massey and Couper farms, signaling the spread of the Rot. The once-vibrant jacaranda trees are now dead, their branches covered in gray, rotting material. The smell of the Rot, eerily similar to the scent of the Hunters from the night before, fills the air, adding to the foreboding sense of doom as she nears her destination.

The Massey Farm
Location: Massey Farm, outskirts of Wayfair Castle.
Sera encounters Mrs. Massey, a farmer whose land is being overtaken by the Rot. The Masseys are trying to hold on, but they fear the Rot will soon claim the rest of their crops. Mrs. Massey explains how their attempts to stop the Rot have failed and expresses her sadness that her son had to leave to find work on the ships, as there is no future for farming anymore. This scene emphasizes the impact of the Rot on the everyday lives of the kingdom’s farmers and the desperation they feel. The gray fields surrounding the Massey farm are described as barren, with only an acre of land still untainted by the Rot. Mrs. Massey mentions that wooden blockades they built to stop the spread have failed.

The Coupers’ Home (Climactic Discovery)
Location: Couper Farm, near the Massey farm.
When Sera arrives at the Couper home, she finds the door ajar and an eerie silence. As she enters the house, a thick stench hits her, and she makes the horrifying discovery that the entire Couper family has died, likely by suicide. The scene is grim and emotional, as she finds Penn, Amarys, and their children lying together in their bed, an empty vial beside Penn indicating they took their own lives. The smell of death is overwhelming, and the only sound in the house is the buzzing of flies. The home is still, with children’s toys and other personal items neatly arranged, giving a sense of tragic finality. Sera realizes that her gift didn’t warn her of their deaths because there was no life left in the house.

Chapter 15 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Anger and Determination (Wayfair Castle, Main Hall and Stairs)
Location: Main hall and stairs of Wayfair Castle.
Sera is furious after discovering the death of the Couper family. As she storms through the castle, she is overwhelmed by the contrast between the lavish preparations for the upcoming Rite (smells of roasting meat, baking desserts, and flowers) and the tragedy she witnessed. The image of the dead family and the abundance of food drives her anger. The stark contrast between the grandeur of the castle’s preparations and Sera’s frustration with the Crown’s indifference creates a tense, emotional scene.  She climbs the polished limestone stairs to confront the King (her stepfather) about the lack of support for the kingdom's suffering people.

Confrontation with the King and Tavius (West Wing, King’s Private Chambers)
West Wing of the castle, King Ernald’s private chambers.
Sera arrives at her stepfather’s private chambers, guarded by Royal Guards. She forces her way past them with a mix of threat and determination. Upon entering, she finds her stepfather, King Ernald, and her stepbrother Tavius. The room is filled with pipe tobacco smoke, and sunlight pours through the windows, illuminating the glass figurines on the shelves (gods, Primals, animals, buildings). These serve as a backdrop to the tense family dynamic. Sera confronts the King and Tavius about the Couper family’s deaths, blaming their desperation on the Crown’s failure to provide for its people. Tavius, dismissive and cruel, blames Sera’s failure to stop the Rot for the kingdom’s troubles. Sera and Tavius argue bitterly, with Tavius mocking the dead farmers and suggesting they should have found other work, while Sera counters with the realities of starvation and unemployment. The King’s chamber is described as circular with an iron desk. The hand-blown glass figurines collected by the King highlight his interest in things that seem trivial compared to the crisis at hand, adding to Sera’s frustration.

Tensions Explode (King’s Private Chambers)
As the argument escalates, Tavius insults Sera and throws a bowl of dates at her, striking her arm. The tension between them reaches a boiling point, and Sera nearly attacks him before being ordered to stop by the King. King Ernald finally reprimands Tavius for his behavior, a rare moment where the King acknowledges Tavius’s cruelty, but he also prevents Sera from retaliating. Though furious, Sera complies with the King’s order not to attack her stepbrother. The King tries to justify Tavius’s behavior by saying he’s worried about the situation in the kingdom, but Sera remains unconvinced. The room feels claustrophobic, filled with suppressed emotions. The King’s weariness contrasts with Sera’s passionate anger, deepening the family’s disconnection. The King’s dismissal of the Coupers’ death as a tragedy but not something he can control leaves Sera frustrated. He believes time will fix the Rot and the kingdom’s problems, but Sera knows inaction will only make things worse.

Mysterious Whisper (Banquet Hall and Alcoves)
Location: Banquet hall, Wayfair Castle.
After leaving the King’s chambers, Sera walks through the castle, headed to meet Sir Holland for training. As she passes through the banquet hall, she hears a faint whisper: “Please. Someone… Help me.” The banquet hall is empty, and the sound appears to be coming from one of the candlelit alcoves leading to a meeting room. Sera, suspecting something is wrong, approaches the room cautiously. Inside the room, Sera finds a young kitchen servant (one she’d noticed earlier praying in the kitchens) kneeling beside a table. The girl looks nervous and pale, her eyes darting toward the door behind Sera. Sera quickly realizes that the situation isn’t right—the servant girl’s clothes are pristine, and there’s no sign of distress. The door suddenly closes and locks behind her, confirming that she’s walked into a trap. The chapter ends with the ominous realization that Sera has been lured into a dangerous situation.
This chapter continues to highlight the growing divide between the Crown and the people of Lasania, as Sera struggles to make her stepfather and Tavius understand the urgency of the situation. The trap at the end signals a dangerous shift in the storyline, leaving readers on edge for what’s to come next.

Chapter 16 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

A Trap in Wayfair Castle (Interior Chamber of the Castle)
Location: A private chamber in Wayfair Castle.
Sera finds herself trapped by a group of attackers after being lured into the chamber by a servant girl. As Sera processes the situation, she quickly realizes she has been set up by three Royal Guards, who are paid to eliminate her. The prickle of danger and the sense of betrayal from the servant sets the stage for the confrontation. Sera reveals she knows what’s coming: violence. She braces for the attack, ready with her knife hidden in her boot, and tries to reason with them, suspecting rumors about her being cursed or a target because of the Rot. The guards admit they're only motivated by coin, which escalates the tension. Sera engages in a brutal fight with the guards. She uses her skill and quick thinking, utilizing the small blade from her boot and surprising the guards with her agility. The fight is fast-paced, culminating in a messy, bloody scene where Sera ends up killing all three guards, leaving their blood staining the ivory carpet. The tension is heightened by Sera’s internal reflections on the cost of taking a life and the marks each death leaves behind, a sentiment she recalls from her conversation with Ash.

Confrontation with the Servant (Same Chamber)
Location: Same chamber, Wayfair Castle.
After dispatching the guards, Sera confronts the terrified servant girl, who claims she didn’t want to be involved and was coerced into the situation. Sera questions her, but the girl insists she doesn’t know who orchestrated the attack, claiming she thought Sera was just a handmaiden. Sera’s Suspicion: Sera suspects that her stepbrother Tavius is behind the attack, recalling his earlier taunts and wondering if he had the resources to pull it off. She isn’t certain if the servant is telling the truth or simply trying to avoid punishment. The broken vase and blood-soaked carpet add to the chaotic, violent scene. Sera notes the aftermath of the fight, remarking grimly on how the carpet will never recover from the bloodstains, which adds a dark, almost humorous touch to the grim situation.

Arrival of the God (Same Chamber, Wayfair Castle)
Location: Same chamber, Wayfair Castle.
Royal Guards enter the chamber after the fight, but the figure that catches Sera’s attention is an unfamiliar golden-skinned god who arrives alongside her mother, the Queen. The god has gold facial paint resembling wings and pale, ethereal eyes, signaling his divine nature. The god, later revealed as Callum from the Court of Dalos, surveys the scene with an unsettling grin, and Sera immediately feels uneasy. Despite her mother’s pale reaction, she pretends to believe Sera’s lie that she “found them like this.” The presence of the god adds weight to the moment, as gods rarely intervene in such mortal affairs.

Reflection and Speculation (Healer Dirks’ Courtyard)
Location: Healer Dirks’ home in the Garden District, courtyard.
The following afternoon, Sera helps Ezra wash linens at Healer Dirks’ home, where those injured in the recent protests are being treated. As they hang linens, the two discuss the attack and speculate about Tavius’s involvement. Sera remains convinced Tavius orchestrated the attack, though Ezra is less certain, pointing out that Tavius likely doesn’t have enough money. Ezra suggests investigating the servant girl, fearing she might still pose a threat. Sera is torn, not wanting to punish a potentially innocent person. The scene is quieter and reflective compared to the earlier chaos, giving both characters a chance to discuss the incident. The presence of Royal Guards around the courtyard hints at the lingering tension and danger.

Gift from a God (Courtyard and Street, Outside Dirks’ Home)
Location: Courtyard and street outside Healer Dirks’ home.
As Sera finishes her conversation with Ezra, she notices a stranger near the carriage—a tall, fair-haired man with glowing amber eyes and an unsettling aura. His appearance unnerves Sera, especially when she realizes that the sunlight doesn’t seem to touch him. He introduces himself as Ector, a god, and hands Sera a wooden box. Without explaining much, he tells her it’s for her. Sera’s Gift: Alone in the shadows, Sera opens the box and discovers a magnificent dagger, crafted from shadowstone. The hilt is shaped like a crescent moon, and the blade is etched with the design of a dragon, symbolizing power. Sera immediately knows the gift is from Ash, feeling a deep emotional connection to the dagger. It’s the first meaningful gift she’s ever received, and it leaves her both emotional and grateful. The dagger represents more than just a weapon—it’s a symbol of care and recognition, something Sera has never experienced from anyone else. The moment is a powerful reminder of her connection to Ash, solidifying their growing bond.
This chapter balances intense action with moments of emotional depth, as Sera navigates the physical danger of the ambush and the personal impact of receiving a meaningful gift from Ash. The shadowstone dagger serves as a symbol of both power and connection, representing Sera’s growing ties to the gods and her evolving sense of self.

Chapter 17 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Odetta’s Funeral (Stonehill)
Location: Stonehill, where Odetta’s family lives.
Sera attends the funeral of Odetta, a woman she thought of as family. Upon visiting Odetta's room and finding it being stripped, Sera realizes Odetta has passed away, just as Odetta had warned. She silently joins the small group of mourners at Stonehill, where Sir Holland and Ezra stand by her side, offering silent support. As the pyre is lit and Odetta’s body is consumed by the flames, Sera reflects on Odetta's passing, knowing she is now in the Shadowlands. The scene is somber, with the salty breeze from the sea and the flames symbolizing both closure and the end of Odetta's journey in this world. Sera's quiet resignation shows her acceptance of death, a theme closely tied to her relationship with the gods and the Vale.

Sera’s Illness and Sir Holland’s Brew (Wayfair Castle, Sera’s Chambers)
Location: Wayfair Castle, training room and Sera’s chambers.
The next morning, Sera wakes with a throbbing headache that worsens throughout the day, affecting her performance during training with Sir Holland. She feels queasy and tired, leading Sir Holland to send her back to her chambers to rest. His concern is evident as he prepares a healing brew for her, made with herbs like chasteberry, chamomile, fennel, willow, and peppermint. Back in her room, Sera drinks the potion, and her headache begins to ease. Sir Holland shares a story about Sotoria, a young woman who was brought back from the dead against her will by someone obsessed with her, making an unsettling comparison between Sera and Sotoria. The story reflects Sera's inner struggles with control and power in her life. Sera's discomfort and fatigue are physical representations of the emotional weight she carries, especially with the recent death of Odetta and her continued questioning of her role and fate. The potion acts as a temporary relief, both from her illness and her burdens.

Blood and Revelation (Sera’s Chambers)
Location: Sera’s chambers, Wayfair Castle.
After drinking the potion and resting, Sera feels better but discovers blood in her mouth when brushing her teeth. This sudden appearance of blood is alarming, raising concerns about her health or a deeper, more mystical issue related to her connection to the gods. The discovery of blood adds an ominous, foreboding tone to the chapter. It hints that something is not right with Sera physically or spiritually, contributing to the growing tension in her story.

Attending the Rite (Sun Temple, Carsodonia)
Location: Sun Temple, Carsodonia.
Dressed as one of the Queen’s handmaidens, Sera attends the Rite at the Sun Temple. The Temple, made of crushed diamond and limestone, reflects the sun, adding a radiant, almost divine energy to the scene. Inside, nobles, merchants, and landowners gather to witness the Ascension of the Chosen, a male who is prepared for his transformation. Sera observes the Sun Priests and the crowd, spotting her mother, the Queen, and her stepsiblings, Ezra and Tavius. The atmosphere is both grand and oppressive, as the Temple is filled with a palpable energy, especially when Kolis, the Primal of Life, arrives in a flash of silver eather. His divine presence is overwhelming, and when his gaze sweeps over the crowd, Sera feels it land on her, sending a shiver down her spine. The Sun Temple is a place of power, both majestic and unsettling, with the arrival of Kolis heightening the tension. The sense of divine judgment and Sera’s discomfort emphasize her complicated relationship with the gods and her destiny as the Chosen One.

Encounter with Ezra and the Body in the Carriage (Primal Gardens and Stables, Wayfair Castle)
Location: Primal Gardens and Stables, Wayfair Castle.
Later that night, after avoiding her mother during the Rite's celebrations, Sera wanders the Primal Gardens. While there, she encounters Ezra, who is covered in blood and appears distraught. Sera immediately asks if someone has harmed her, prepared to exact vengeance, but Ezra assures her that the blood isn’t hers. Ezra reveals that the blood belongs to her childhood friend, Mari, who died after an altercation while helping a young girl from the streets. The two go to the stables, where Mari’s body lies slumped in the carriage. Though Sera confirms that Mari is dead, Ezra hints at the possibility of bringing her back, suggesting that Sera has the power to reverse death. This scene is filled with tension and desperation as Ezra looks to Sera for help in a morally ambiguous situation. The presence of the dead body in the carriage adds a dark, grim element, while Ezra’s plea to save Mari creates a moment of emotional conflict for Sera, who is already burdened by her role and abilities.
This chapter touches on themes of death, power, and destiny as Sera faces the reality of her abilities and the burden of the Ascension. Her encounter with Ezra and the moral dilemma of saving Mari add to the complexity of her character, as she navigates the fine line between life and death, both for herself and others.

Chapter 18 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

The Memory of Butters and Ezra’s Plea:
Location: Carriage in the Stables, Wayfair Castle.
The chapter begins with a conversation between Sera and Ezra about the past. Ezra recalls how Sera once brought her childhood cat, Butters, back to life when they were children. Sera downplays the memory, pointing out that Butters died again shortly after. Ezra insists that the second death wasn’t Sera’s fault and pleads for her to use the same gift to help her friend, Marisol, who lies dead in the carriage.
Ezra reveals her deep feelings for Marisol, confessing that she loves her and begs Sera to bring her back. This revelation strengthens the emotional weight of Ezra’s request, as it’s not just about saving a friend, but someone she deeply cares for. Sera, moved by her stepsister’s love and desperation, reluctantly agrees to try.

The Resurrection
Location: Carriage.
Sera reaches out and touches Marisol, feeling the familiar warmth flow into her hands as she attempts to bring her back to life. However, this time, something new happens—eather, a silvery glow, seeps from Sera’s hands and into Marisol, something Sera had never seen before in any of her previous attempts.
For a moment, it seems like nothing is going to happen, but then Marisol’s body jerks, and she begins to cough violently. Marisol is alive. Sera, shocked that it worked, falls back, overwhelmed by what she’s done. Ezra is overjoyed, and Marisol, confused but unharmed, wakes up not realizing she had died.
The tension during the resurrection is thick, with uncertainty and a sense of danger. Sera’s anxiety about whether Marisol will return as herself or as something darker lingers, but relief floods the scene when Marisol wakes up seemingly normal.

Ezra and Marisol’s Relationship
Location: Outside the Carriage.
After the resurrection, Ezra and Marisol share a kiss, confirming Sera’s suspicions about their relationship. Their deep connection is clear, and Ezra is grateful beyond words for what Sera has done. She promises to ensure that Marisol never learns the truth of her death and resurrection.
Ezra expresses her gratitude to Sera, calling her a blessing and reaffirming that her powers are a gift, not a curse or failure. This validation from Ezra touches Sera deeply, though she struggles to accept it.
Mood/Atmosphere: The warmth of love between Ezra and Marisol contrasts sharply with Sera’s growing unease about the resurrection. Ezra’s heartfelt gratitude adds emotional depth, but Sera feels the weight of what she’s done, realizing the potential consequences of bringing someone back from the dead.

A Moment of Love and a Warning

Location: Courtyard of Wayfair Castle.
Ezra offers to have Sera join them as they clean up and eat, but Sera declines, feeling too emotionally overwhelmed. Before she leaves, Ezra hugs Sera tightly, a gesture that surprises Sera, who isn’t used to physical affection. Ezra tells Sera she loves her, a rare and profound moment that leaves Sera stunned and emotional.
As Ezra returns to the carriage, Sera is left to process everything that has happened. She feels a cold, ominous presence on the back of her neck, realizing that in using her power to bring back Marisol, she has crossed a dangerous line. The dread settles over her, signaling that she has, in a way, “played like a Primal,” just as Odetta had warned her not to.
The scene shifts from the warmth of Ezra’s love and gratitude to a chilling sense of foreboding. Sera’s fear of the consequences of her actions grows, setting the stage for the challenges and dangers she is sure to face in the future.

This chapter marks a turning point in Sera’s story, as she begins to fully grasp the extent and dangers of her powers, setting up for the conflicts to come.

Chapter 19 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera's Reflection on the Resurrection
Location: Sera's Bedchamber, Wayfair Castle.
The chapter opens with Sera still reeling from having brought Marisol back to life in the previous chapter. The gravity of what she’s done weighs on her as she reflects on the unexpected silver glow—eather—that emerged during the resurrection. She tries to reassure herself that no one, not even the Primal of Death, would know, and convinces herself that she will never use the gift again. She drifts into a restless sleep plagued by nightmares, still hearing Odetta’s warnings in her head.

Tavius's Invasion
Location: Sera’s Bedchamber, Wayfair Castle.
Sera awakens to find Tavius, her stepbrother, standing in her room. At first, she thinks it’s a nightmare or a drunken mistake, but it becomes quickly apparent that he is there for something far more sinister. He mocks her, and despite her attempts to remain calm and assess the situation, things escalate. Tavius has stolen Sera's dagger, which he retrieved while she slept, further unsettling her.
The tension builds as Tavius physically assaults her, throwing her onto the bed, pinning her down, and degrading her. In a horrifying revelation, Tavius informs Sera that King Ernald, his father and Sera's stepfather, is dead, and that he, Tavius, is now King. His newfound power emboldens him to abuse and torment Sera, relishing the opportunity to finally break her. He informs her that Sir Holland has been reassigned, leaving her without protection. Sera, overwhelmed by the implications of Ernald's death and Tavius’s new power, still resists him.

Tavius's Cruelty
Location: Great Hall, Wayfair Castle.
Tavius drags Sera to the Great Hall, where a ceremonial banner representing the King’s passing hangs, and servants are clearing the remnants of the previous night’s Rite celebration. Tavius orders the servants out, leaving only the guards and Sera. He has Sera bound to the statue of the Primal of Life, her wrists tied high above her head.
Tavius takes out a whip, declaring that Sera is like a wild horse that needs to be broken. The physical assault begins, with Tavius striking Sera's back. Sera retreats into herself, dissociating from the pain, letting the icy fire of vengeance fill her. She refuses to give Tavius the satisfaction of seeing her beg or cry, even as the whipping continues.
Sera makes a dark promise, warning Tavius that she will kill him, tear out his heart, and watch him burn. Tavius is momentarily shaken by her words, but quickly resumes his cruel punishment.

Ezra and the Queen Arrive
Location: Great Hall, Wayfair Castle.
The abuse is interrupted by the arrival of Ezra and Queen Calliphe, who are horrified to find Tavius whipping Sera. They demand to know what is happening, but Tavius dismisses them arrogantly, still caught up in his newfound power as King. However, as the confrontation unfolds, something strange begins to happen in the hall.
The very floor trembles, and cracks start to form in the tiles. Thunder rumbles through the Great Hall as eather—the power associated with the Primals—begins to manifest. The atmosphere changes, growing thick with power as the realm splits open.

The Primal of Death Arrives
Location: Great Hall, Wayfair Castle.
In a dramatic climax, Death arrives. The Primal of Death manifests as a tall, dark form surrounded by swirling shadows and silver-tinged darkness. The arrival of this powerful entity sends shockwaves through the hall, cracking the glass and sending fear through the hearts of those present. Sera, still tied to the statue, feels the power and realizes that Death has returned.
Chapter 19 is intense, filled with violence, power plays, and the chilling arrival of a Primal force that has long been absent. The tension between Sera and Tavius escalates to a breaking point, but it is Death’s arrival that promises to change everything.

Chapter 20 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Revelation of Ash’s True Identity
Location: Great Hall, Wayfair Castle.
The chapter opens with the shocking revelation that Ash is not just a Shadowlands god but is actually Nyktos, the Primal of Death. As the swirling shadows and wings dissipate, his true power is revealed through his glowing, silver eyes and the eather pulsing through his veins. Sera is stunned to realize that Ash, the man she had grown close to, has been the Primal of Death all along. The depth of his power is immediately evident, and the gravity of this moment leaves both Sera and the onlookers in shock.

Nyktos Confronts Tavius and the Guards
Location: Great Hall, Wayfair Castle.
Tavius, shaken by Nyktos’s true identity, tries to demand answers. Nyktos coldly introduces himself as Asher, the Primal of Death and the Guardian of Souls. The hall falls into stunned silence as Ezra, Sera’s mother, and the Royal Guards bow in submission. Tavius, however, remains frozen in disbelief.
The scene escalates when Nyktos addresses the Royal Guards who participated in Sera’s attack. In a chilling display of his power, Nyktos shatters one of the guards into dust with just a look, demonstrating the terrifying extent of his abilities. As the other guards beg for mercy, they too are destroyed, their bodies crumbling into ash.

Nyktos’s Wrath on Tavius
Location: Great Hall, Wayfair Castle.
Pike, one of the Royal Guards, foolishly tries to shoot an arrow at Nyktos, but it is easily caught and discarded. In a brutal moment, Nyktos kills Pike by biting into his throat, an act that leaves Sera nauseous as she watches the gore unfold.
The confrontation between Nyktos and Tavius becomes more intense as Nyktos pins Tavius to the statue of Kolis using the whip that had been used on Sera. Tavius is utterly helpless, and Nyktos declares that Tavius will not die yet, but his soul will belong to Nyktos for eternity. Sera’s mother begs for Tavius’s life, but Nyktos is unmoved, disgusted by Tavius’s actions and dismissive of her pleas.

Sera’s Vengeance
Location: Great Hall, Wayfair Castle.
Sera, feeling the icy fire of vengeance burning inside her, asks Nyktos to let Tavius go. However, this is not out of mercy; instead, she takes control of the situation. With cold determination, she grabs Nyktos’s sword and exacts her revenge on Tavius, slicing off his arms and impaling him to the statue of Kolis. She shoves the whip into his mouth, silencing him forever as he dies in agony. Sera’s calculated brutality shocks everyone in the room, but for her, it is justice.

Aftermath and Sera’s Realization
Location: Great Hall, Wayfair Castle.
After Tavius’s death, Sera commands Ezra to take the throne, believing that her stepsister is the rightful ruler. The hall slowly clears as Nyktos orders everyone to leave. Alone with him, Sera is overwhelmed by the emotions that have been building up over the years. She realizes that Nyktos, the Primal she had been trained her whole life to seduce and deceive, had known her identity all along.
In a moment of fury, Sera attacks Nyktos, but he easily restrains her. Their physical proximity heightens the tension between them, with Sera both furious and attracted to him. She confronts him about rejecting her and failing to fulfill their deal. Nyktos reveals that he had always known who she was, but the reasons for his actions remain unclear. Sera, filled with conflicting emotions, realizes that her duty to seduce Nyktos is far more complicated than she ever imagined.

Chapter 20 is a pivotal moment in the story, where revelations, revenge, and the complex dynamics between Sera and Nyktos come to the forefront. Sera’s path has become far more dangerous and uncertain, especially now that she knows the true identity of the Primal she is meant to deceive.

Chapter 21 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

The Consequences of Tavius’s Death
Location: Great Hall, Wayfair Castle.
The chapter begins with Sera reeling from the events of the previous chapter, where she had brutally killed her stepbrother, Tavius. Nyktos (Ash) informs her that because she killed the heir apparent King, she is now at risk of execution unless he takes her with him as his Consort. Although Sera protests that Ash was about to kill Tavius himself, Ash reminds her that, as a Primal, he is not bound by mortal laws. He questions whether Sera values her life at all, as she seemed to act without regard for the consequences.
Sera argues that Ash had refused to uphold his part of the deal that her family made with him. Ash pushes back, stating that she has no idea what she's talking about and that he did give her freedom, allowing her to make her own choices. This creates tension between them as both characters try to assert their points, but it’s clear that Ash is now ready to fulfill the bargain by taking her to the Shadowlands as his Consort.

Ash’s Frustration and the Threat of Other Primals
Location: Great Hall, Wayfair Castle.
The argument escalates as Ash expresses frustration over Sera’s lack of understanding. He explains that now that he has publicly claimed her, other gods and Primals will take notice of her and could try to use her to sway him. He warns that whatever suffering she has endured so far would pale in comparison to what these powerful beings could do if they sought to control her. This revelation adds urgency to the situation, as Sera begins to realize the larger implications of becoming the Consort of the Primal of Death.
Sera, driven by her sense of duty to Lasania, acknowledges that she has to put aside her personal feelings and focus on the bigger picture. Although she remains angry and hurt by Ash’s previous actions, she knows that leaving with him is her only chance to save her kingdom.

Leaving Wayfair Castle
Location: Wayfair Castle and Dark Elms.
Sera asks to say goodbye to her family, but Ash refuses, saying he would likely kill her mother for pleading for Tavius’s life. Reluctantly, Sera agrees to leave without a farewell, though she asks if her family will know where she’s gone. Ash assures her that they will be informed and protected by wards, magical barriers that will prevent gods from entering their homes.
Ash then takes Sera’s hand, and the air around them fills with mist. As they prepare to leave, Ash warns Sera that the process might sting, and she is suddenly engulfed in a burning sensation as the mist transports them. When Sera regains her senses, she finds herself seated on a massive horse, Odin, with Ash holding her securely. They are riding through the Dark Elms, the forest she knows well from her childhood.

Ash’s Powers and Connection to Sera
Location: Dark Elms.
Ash explains that the mist they traveled through is eather, an extension of his power, which can either make mortals sleep or kill them instantly if willed. He reveals that the deal between them links their lives on a basic level, meaning he can sense when Sera is in danger. Ash also reveals that he tasted Sera’s blood during a previous encounter, which allows him to feel her emotions when they are intense.
This revelation leaves Sera feeling uneasy, especially knowing that Ash could feel the pain and fear she experienced during her confrontation with Tavius. She tries to make herself more comfortable on the horse, and their close physical proximity only adds to the tension between them. Despite the animosity, there is a clear undercurrent of attraction that both characters are trying to navigate.

The Gateway to the Shadowlands
Location: The Lake (Dark Elms).
As they ride through the forest, Ash reveals that the lake Sera has always found calming is actually a gateway to the Shadowlands. He demonstrates his power by splitting the lake in two, revealing a fissure in the shadowstone floor. From the crack, mist rises, and Ash explains that this lake is one of the only ways to enter the Shadowlands without tearing open the realms, which would kill a mortal.
Sera is shaken by the discovery that her beloved lake has always been a gateway to the realm of death. As they descend into the mist-filled rift, Ash finally acknowledges that he should have told her who he really was when they first met. He admits that he enjoyed their time together, and at the lake, he had wanted to be just Ash and not the Primal of Death. His words reveal a vulnerability and a desire for something more than just duty, which complicates Sera’s feelings even further.

This chapter continues to build the complex dynamic between Sera and Ash, while also expanding the world and introducing the gateway to the Shadowlands, which will likely play a key role in their journey going forward. The stakes are higher than ever, as both characters must now face the consequences of the deal made between their families.

Chapter 22 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Entering the Shadowlands
Location: Shadowlands, transitioning from the mortal realm.
Sera and Ash enter the Shadowlands, a place devoid of both sun and moon, where the sky is filled with brilliant, vivid stars casting a silvery glow. Unlike the mortal realm, this place is neither day nor night, creating a strange and timeless atmosphere. As they travel, Sera begins to realize the magnitude of where she is, with twisted, barren trees lining the cobblestone road.
A sense of curiosity stirs within her, conflicting with the uncertainty and emotions she’s grappling with. Despite the tension between her and Ash, Sera begins to subtly consider her objective to seduce him, noticing that she feels comfortable against his cool skin as they ride together.

Nektas the Draken
Location: Shadowlands, en route to the House of Haides.
As they travel, Sera and Ash encounter a massive draken named Nektas, a creature that closely resembles a dragon but is far more intelligent and powerful. Sera is both awed and terrified, realizing she is face-to-face with a being she’d only read about in ancient tomes. Ash reassures her that Nektas won’t harm her and encourages her to pet him, which she does tentatively. Nektas responds by purring, showing that he’s friendly.
Sera’s fear transforms into amazement as she touches the draken’s leathery scales, feeling the reality of the legends she had read about. Nektas takes off into the sky, and Sera’s awe deepens when she realizes there are three other drakenOrphine, Ehthawn, and Crolee—all circling above. This reinforces the fact that Ash, as a Primal, has immense power and protection from these ancient creatures.

The House of Haides
Location: The House of Haides, Shadowlands.
The pair arrive at Haides, a sprawling, star-kissed palace that dwarfs any castle Sera has ever seen, surrounded by the city of Lethe and the Black Bay. As they approach the palace, Sera’s attention is drawn to the Rise, the imposing outer wall surrounding the palace. She’s horrified to discover that gods have been impaled on the walls, their bodies stripped bare and displayed as a warning to others.
Sera is revolted by this display of cruelty, contrasting it with Ash’s earlier assertion that all deaths leave a mark. This leaves her feeling numb and confused, as she tries to reconcile the gentleness he sometimes shows with the brutal reminders of his power over life and death.

Entering the Palace
Location: The House of Haides, Shadowlands.
Inside the palace, Sera is greeted by Rhain, one of Ash’s guards. As she’s led inside, she is introduced to Theon and Lailah, two gods who seem more casual and teasing than Sera expected. They are accompanied by a small draken named Reaver, who adds a moment of lightness to the otherwise tense situation. The two gods make playful remarks about Ash’s choice of Consort, though it’s clear they are curious about Sera.
Despite the levity, Sera is still processing the grim reality of what she saw outside. Ash and Rhain leave to discuss something urgent, leaving Sera to be led to her room by Aios, another figure in Ash’s household.

Aios’s Revelations
Location: The House of Haides, Shadowlands.
Aios takes Sera to her room, revealing that it has been prepared for her for quite some time, suggesting that Ash had anticipated her arrival well in advance. Aios explains that although there is no staff in the palace, some gods like herself help Ash by choice, as he provides for them in ways that go beyond mere material compensation. Sera learns that Ash is the only one who truly resides in the palace, and that it wouldn’t be safe for others to live there due to his immense power. This new information leaves Sera both curious and unsettled, as she begins to grasp the complexities of Ash’s world. Despite the hospitality shown by Aios and the others, Sera is keenly aware that she is still very much in a dangerous, unfamiliar place.

This chapter builds on Sera’s introduction to the Shadowlands, deepening her understanding of Ash’s world while continuing to challenge her ability to trust him. The revelations about the draken, the gods impaled on the Rise, and the structure of Ash’s household all serve to further complicate her feelings toward her new role as his Consort.

Chapter 23 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Unsettling Safety
Location: Sera’s new bedchamber, House of Haides.
Aios leads Sera into her new room, a luxurious space far beyond anything Sera has ever experienced. As Aios nervously explains, the safety of others in the palace isn’t always guaranteed due to the unpredictable nature of those seeking an audience with Nyktos. Sera is left wondering how much of Aios’s explanation she should believe.
The room is extravagant, with a large sitting area, a massive bed, and an adjoining bathing chamber that feels more like a sanctuary than a bathroom. Sera is overwhelmed by the luxury and the realization of how much her life has changed in such a short time.

A Sense of Isolation
Location: Sera’s bedchamber balcony, House of Haides.
Sera explores the room and steps out onto the balcony, which is connected to Nyktos’s bedchamber next door. The cool breeze and view of Lethe, the city below, provide a moment of reflection. For the first time since entering the Shadowlands, she sees color in the form of blood-red leaves on trees. This contrast to the dreary, shadowy environment unsettles her, emphasizing the duality of the realm she now inhabits.
Aios returns with food, clothing, and draws Sera’s bath, leaving her alone to process everything that has happened. Sera feels isolated despite the luxury, the weight of her mission and the recent events with Tavius hanging heavy on her mind.

A Surprising Visitor
Location: Sera’s bathing chamber, House of Haides.
While bathing, Sera notices her wounds from the whip on her back, still fresh and painful. She is interrupted by Nyktos, who brings an ointment to help her heal without scarring. His entrance is unexpected, but Sera allows him to stay, acknowledging that he’s already seen her in vulnerable states.
The interaction between them is intimate, with Nyktos offering to help wash her hair, a task that catches Sera off guard. She reluctantly agrees, and the act becomes a strange, quiet moment of trust between them.

Questions and Truths
Location: Sera’s bathing chamber, House of Haides.
As Nyktos washes her hair, the two exchange questions. Nyktos is curious about Sera’s life over the past three years, especially her combat training, noting how skilled she is for a princess. Sera reveals that she was trained by a knight to defend herself in preparation for fulfilling the deal made with her forefather.
Sera questions Nyktos about why he had ignored her family’s attempts to summon him, revealing that she hadn’t told anyone about his initial rejection of her. Nyktos is surprised, as he assumed the Shadow Priests had dismissed the summons due to his decision not to fulfill the deal. This revelation exposes a deeper layer of Sera’s shame and frustration over the rejection.
Nyktos clarifies that his refusal was never personal, adding that he found Sera intriguing and unexpected, especially her bluntness and fiery personality. He admits that he found her brave and honorable, but also sensed her fear, anguish, and hopelessness when they first met.

Nyktos’s Emotional Perception
Location: Sera’s bathing chamber, House of Haides.
Summary:Nyktos reveals that he can taste Sera’s emotions, a unique ability among Primals. He describes her emotions in vivid sensory terms—her anger as hot and acidic, her disbelief as cool and tart like lemon. This ability makes him particularly attuned to Sera’s inner turmoil and adds another layer of complexity to their relationship.
Sera is unnerved by how well Nyktos can read her emotions, realizing that there’s little she can hide from him. This new revelation complicates her mission to manipulate him, as she grapples with her own emotions and the growing tension between them.

This chapter deepens the emotional and psychological complexity between Sera and Nyktos, blending moments of intimacy with the underlying tension of their power dynamics. It reveals more about Nyktos’s unique abilities and Sera’s struggles to maintain control over her emotions as she navigates her new role as his Consort.

Chapter 24 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera's Revelation
Location: Sera's bathing chamber, House of Haides.
Sera is shocked to learn that Nyktos can sense and taste her emotions. He admits that sometimes the emotions of mortals or gods are so strong that he can't help but feel them. He had sensed Sera's fear and hopelessness when he first saw her, and although she appeared willing to marry him, she wasn’t truly free to make that choice.
Nyktos tells Sera that she never had real consent in fulfilling the deal. Even though she was willing, it was an obligation forced upon her since birth. This leaves Sera conflicted, as she hadn’t expected him to acknowledge the lack of agency she had in her life. She gains a new respect for him, even though she knows she is still meant to kill him.
The conversation shifts when Sera asks Nyktos if he is reading her emotions now. He reassures her that he’s not and explains that he has mental walls to block out emotions when needed. Sera presses further, asking why he requested a Consort in the first place, especially since he could have asked for anything.

Seduction or Surrender?
Location: Sera's bathing chamber, House of Haides.
Nyktos skillfully avoids answering Sera’s question, promising to explain later. He offers to help her dry off, and what begins as a simple act of drying her body with a towel quickly turns into something more intimate. Nyktos is clearly attracted to Sera, and she realizes this could work to her advantage. Despite her mission, Sera finds herself caught up in the moment, enjoying his touch and losing control of the seduction she intended to use.
Nyktos makes it clear that he knows she wants him, not out of duty, but because she genuinely desires him. His predatory nature allows him to sense her quickening pulse, and the physical connection between them intensifies as Nyktos continues to tease her, touching her in ways that leave Sera overwhelmed with pleasure.
However, Sera’s plan to seduce Nyktos backfires as she realizes she’s the one being seduced. He’s in control of the situation, leaving Sera off-balance.

Aftermath and Healing
Location: Sera's bedchamber, House of Haides.
After their intimate encounter, Nyktos helps Sera dress and applies a balm to her whip wounds. The act of care contrasts with the ruthless image of Nyktos that Sera had in her mind. She’s left feeling confused about who he truly is—someone capable of both immense kindness and unspeakable cruelty, as shown by the gods impaled on his wall.
As Nyktos applies the ointment, Sera asks about his age and how long he’s been alive. Nyktos deflects the question, reminding her that he’s still the same person she met at the lake. This moment deepens the growing bond between them, though Sera remains wary of his true nature.

A Shocking Truth
Location: Sera's bedchamber, House of Haides.
Sera confronts Nyktos about the impaled gods on the wall, questioning how someone who believes killing leaves a permanent mark could do something so brutal. Nyktos denies being responsible for the impaled gods, revealing that it wasn’t his doing but that of another Primal. The impalement serves as a warning, not one he issued but one from a Primal testing his limits.Nyktos explains that in the realm of Iliseeum, other Primals constantly push and test one another to see how far they can go. The gods on the wall were a result of these power plays, an attempt to provoke Nyktos.
The most shocking revelation comes when Nyktos tells Sera that he didn’t make the deal with her family. It was his father, the previous Primal of Death, who struck the deal with Roderick Mierel. Nyktos inherited the deal, but he wasn’t the one who originally demanded a Consort from Sera’s bloodline.
This chapter builds tension between Sera and Nyktos, revealing more about their inner worlds and complicating the plot with new layers of intrigue and unexpected revelations.

Chapter 25 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

The Truth About the Deal
Location: Sera's bedchamber, House of Haides.
Sera is shocked to learn that Nyktos (Ash) hadn’t made the deal with her family—it was his father, the former Primal of Death. When his father died, the deal, the Shadowlands, and all of his responsibilities, including Sera, were passed to Nyktos. This revelation shakes Sera because it means Ash inherited the obligation, not by choice, but as a consequence of his father’s actions.
Ash reveals that Primals rarely die, but when they do, their power must transfer to another to prevent catastrophic consequences for the realms. He was very young, just past the Culling, when his father made the deal with Roderick Mierel. The Culling is a process that slows the aging of Primals and gods while intensifying their eather (power).
Sera realizes that Ash, like her, never consented to the deal. Both of them were caught in a contract made by others, stripping them of their choices. This makes her feel a complicated mix of emotions, including sympathy and respect for him.

Ash's Loss
Location: Sera's bedchamber, House of Haides.
Sera questions Ash about his mother, and he reveals that she died during childbirth, leaving his father without a Consort when he made the deal. This adds another layer to Ash’s past, showing that he’s lived with loss and grief from an early age.
Ash tells Sera that he never fulfilled the deal because she never truly consented to it. This strikes Sera deeply because it mirrors her own lack of choice in the matter. However, it makes her mission more difficult because she can’t blame Ash for the deal—he didn’t create it, and he’s been careful to respect her agency.

Lathan and the Gods
Location: Sera's bedchamber, House of Haides.
Ash explains that Lathan, a trusted guard (who was killed by gods), had been watching over Sera to protect her. Lathan knew of the deal and Ash’s intentions not to fulfill it, but his duty was to ensure Sera’s safety because others might sense her mark as the promised Consort.
Ash suspects the gods who killed the Kazin siblings and Andreia may have been searching for Sera, but their deaths don’t fully fit that theory. The gods' victims could have had traces of godly blood, which made them targets. However, the deaths remain a mystery.
Sera learns that Lathan was a godling, a child born of a mortal and a god, and that he died trying to protect her from the gods.

Consequences and Fears
Location: Sera's bedchamber, House of Haides.
Sera asks Ash if there are consequences for him if the deal isn’t fulfilled, but he assures her there are none. This leads her to question why he had Lathan watching her and why he would care about her safety when he wasn’t obligated to her. Ash’s answer is chilling. He tells Sera that without Lathan’s intervention, she would have been killed by the gods the night they met. He also hints that her life may have been simpler if that had happened, as now she’s in the Shadowlands, and his enemies will soon become hers.

Sera's Conflict
Location: Sera's bedchamber, House of Haides.
After Ash leaves, Sera is left to process everything she’s learned. She acknowledges the unfairness of the situation—Ash didn’t make the deal, and neither of them should have to pay for the choices made by others. Yet, the fate of Lasania hangs in the balance, and Sera knows she must carry out her mission to stop the Rot.
As Sera contemplates her duty, she realizes that if she succeeds in killing Ash, the Primal of Death, there could be devastating consequences for both realms. Another Primal would take his place, possibly one without Ash’s sense of justice or kindness.
Despite her growing feelings for Ash, Sera is determined to fulfill her mission. She tells herself that the lives of Lasanians are more important than her emotions or her life with Ash.

Ector's Guard
Location: Sera's bedchamber, House of Haides.
After sleeping for a full day, Sera wakes up and is greeted by Aios, who brings her food and clothing. Aios explains more about godlings, revealing that they are mortal unless they survive the Culling with the help of a god’s blood. She also shares that she once belonged to the Court of Kithreia, serving the Primal Maia, but came to the Shadowlands for safety.
When Sera tries to leave her room, she finds Ector, a god, standing guard outside her door. Ector admits he’s there to ensure her safety, but Sera suspects she’s being kept from leaving. He hints that Nyktos doesn’t fully know what to do with her yet, leaving Sera feeling both frustrated and trapped.
This chapter deepens the tension between duty and emotion as Sera learns more about Ash’s past and her own role in the Shadowlands.

Chapter 26 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

An Unexpected Visitor
Location: Sera’s bedchamber, House of Haides.
Sera is awakened by Davina (Dav), a draken who brings her food. Davina’s blue eyes and black, vertical pupils mark her as a draken, which surprises Sera.
Sera learns that “meyaah Liessa” means “my Queen,” indicating her elevated status as the Consort.
Davina explains that Nyktos (Ash) has been busy dealing with Shades in the Dying Woods. Shades are souls trapped in the Shadowlands, unable to return to the mortal realm or pass into the Vale, driven mad by hunger and thirst.
After a brief conversation, Davina leaves, and Sera, feeling trapped and restless, grows increasingly frustrated by her confinement.

A Brief Escape
Location: Hallways of the palace, House of Haides.
Sera is finally allowed to leave her chambers when Saion, another god, offers to take her to breakfast.
As they walk through the palace, Sera sees the Primal’s and Consort’s thrones, which are hauntingly beautiful, with large wings carved into their backs.
Saion jokes about Nyktos feeding him to the draken if Sera were to escape, but assures her that draken don’t eat gods or mortals unless angered. The conversation lightens the mood.

A Tense Breakfast with Nyktos
Location: Dining chamber, House of Haides.
Sera is surprised to find Nyktos waiting for her at breakfast. He’s dressed simply, but his presence fills the room with intensity.
Their conversation starts off tense, with Sera expressing her anger over being confined to her chambers. Nyktos admits he kept her locked in for her safety, but apologizes for upsetting her, albeit reluctantly.
Nyktos returns Sera’s shadowstone dagger, the weapon she could potentially use to kill him, reminding her of the burden of her duty.

Gods, Hunger, and Feeding
Location: Dining chamber, House of Haides.
Nyktos explains that gods, like Primals, can weaken from hunger or injury and become something more “primitive” if they don’t feed. However, he reveals that he no longer feeds, which piques Sera’s curiosity but leaves many questions unanswered.
The conversation turns to Nyktos’ past, and while he admits he has been many things, he is cryptic about whether he was ever a prisoner, leaving Sera intrigued but frustrated.

Jadis, the Draken
Location: Dining chamber, House of Haides.
Jadis, a small, greenish-brown draken, joins them at the table, and Sera is both awed and charmed by the young creature. Nyktos shares that Jadis is only four years old and not yet able to fly.
Nyktos reveals more about draken, explaining that they can live for thousands of years and mature much like gods. He also shares that Nektas, the large draken Sera saw earlier, is Jadis’s father, and her mother died two years ago.
Nyktos allows Jadis to sit with Sera, who is amazed by how gentle the draken is, despite knowing that draken can eat mortals and gods when angered.

Bonding and Draken Loyalty
Location: Dining chamber, House of Haides.
Nyktos explains that draken are bonded to him, just as they are bonded to other Primals in different Courts. This bond allows them to feel when a Primal is wounded or in danger, which further emphasizes the strength of the draken’s loyalty.
Nyktos confirms that Nektas would have come for him if Sera had seriously injured him in the mortal realm, reinforcing the power and protection draken provide to Primals.
As they talk, Sera grows more curious about Nyktos’ past and his experiences, but he remains guarded, leaving many details vague.

A Tense Resolution
Location: Dining chamber, House of Haides.
Sera reflects on her duty to kill Nyktos, aware that his kindness and strength only make her task more difficult. Nyktos continues to tease her about her anger, but he is also drawn to her fierceness and determination.
The chapter ends with Nyktos hinting that they need to have an important conversation, away from anything breakable, indicating that the discussion ahead could be intense.
This chapter continues to build the tension between Sera’s growing connection with Nyktos and her duty to kill him, while also exploring the powerful bond between the draken and the Primal.

Chapter 27 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Jadis and Saion
Location: Hallways of the palace, House of Haides.
Ash hands the small draken, Jadis, to Saion, instructing him to rock her to sleep. Saion, clearly inexperienced with caring for a draken, is left confused by the task.
As Sera and Ash walk down the hall, Ash mentions they need to discuss her future in the palace, and Sera finds his minimalist decorating style reflective of his own cold, distant nature.

A Tense Moment
Location: Hallways of the palace, House of Haides.
Sera walks into Ash's back, and he reacts with pain, revealing that he may be injured, though he brushes it off. When she tries to touch him out of concern, Ash sharply tells her not to.
Tension builds as Sera challenges Ash's apparent lack of interest in her beyond physical touch. Ash responds by confronting her, pinning her against the wall and describing his intense, almost uncontrollable desire for her.
He makes it clear that his interest is very real and not just about physical attraction. The moment is charged with sexual tension, but Ash regains control and shifts the conversation, suggesting they move on to a "tour" of the palace.

The Palace Tour
Location: Various rooms in the palace, House of Haides.
Ash leads Sera through the palace, showing her several areas, including the library, which belonged mostly to his parents. The library contains many books, but most are ledgers and not much for casual reading.
Sera notices that Ash seems disconnected from things he once enjoyed, like reading, hinting at a loss of passion or escape in his life. He grants her permission to access the library freely.
The real purpose of the tour, however, is to introduce a series of rules or "agreements" that Ash wants Sera to follow for her safety.

Ash’s Rules
Location: Library, House of Haides.
Rule 1: Sera is free to explore the palace and its grounds but cannot enter the Red Woods without Ash. He warns that there are dangers in the woods, including Shades.
Rule 2: Sera can visit the city, but only after she is publicly introduced as Ash’s Consort and with an escort. Until then, she is vulnerable, as mortals hold a lower status and gods from other Courts may not respect her safety.
Rule 3: When Ash has certain visitors, Sera must stay in her chambers. These guests could be dangerous, and Ash doesn’t want her exposed to them.

Ascension and the Role of the Consort
Location: Library, House of Haides.
Ash explains that Sera’s coronation as the Consort will take place in two weeks. The event will be a celebration attended by high-ranking gods and possibly other Primals. A seamstress will outfit her for the event.
Sera inquires about Ascension, curious if she will be made immortal like the Chosen are in the mortal realm. Ash reveals that the process involves draining a mortal’s blood and replacing it with that of a god or Primal. It’s a risky procedure, and not all survive it.
Ash then tells Sera that she will not be Ascended, and she will remain mortal as his Consort. This surprises her, as there has never been a mortal Consort before. He clarifies that he wouldn’t force her into near immortality, which he views as a burden rather than a gift.

Ash’s Views on Love
Location: Library, House of Haides.
As they reach a pair of portraits, Sera learns that they depict Ash’s parents: Eythos, his father, and Mycella, his mother. He shares that his father’s love for his mother led to her death while she was still carrying Ash, which is why Ash is called the Blessed One—no one knows how he survived his birth.
Ash has a jaded view of love, seeing it as a dangerous and destructive force that makes people weak. He believes that love led to the deaths of both his parents, and he doesn’t view it as something good.
Sera argues that Ash himself is proof that something good can come from love, but Ash dismisses the idea, saying that she has no idea of the things he has done or the consequences of his existence.

This chapter explores deeper layers of Ash’s character and his tragic past while setting up the complicated dynamics of Sera’s role as a mortal Consort in the world of gods. The tension between them continues to build, both emotionally and physically, as they navigate their growing connection and the obstacles ahead.

Chapter 28 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Reflections on Love and Loss
LocationSera’s balcony, House of Haides.
Sera contemplates what Ash told her about his parents and their tragic deaths, questioning whether Ash is capable of love. She reflects on the possibility that Ash’s father’s love for his mother might have weakened him, leading to their deaths. Sera doubts whether she is suited for the task of making Ash fall in love with her, feeling inadequate for the mission. She worries about her ability to change his perception of love, which he sees as dangerous.

Sera’s Growing Frustration

LocationThrone Room, House of Haides.
Three days later, Sera stands in the throne room, hiding in the shadows as Ash holds court. She is surrounded by Ash’s guards, including SaionEctor, and Rhain, who engage in playful banter while she observes. Ash listens to a mortal man named Hamid report that a woman named Gemma has gone missing. This visibly concerns Ash, prompting Saion and Rhain to leave to investigate. Sera senses that Gemma is important but receives little information from Ector.

Ector’s Escort

LocationHallways of the palace, House of Haides.
Ector leads Sera out of the throne room, explaining that an unexpected guest has arrived. He offers her the option of returning to her chambers or staying in the library. When Ector mentions the guest is a she, Sera becomes suspicious and frustrated. She wonders who this mysterious woman is and why Ash doesn’t want her around during the visit. This ignites jealousy and insecurity within her.

The Mysterious Guest

LocationHallways of the palace, House of Haides.
Unable to contain her curiosity, Sera sneaks out of the library and overhears a conversation between Ash and the guest, Veses, the Primal of Rites and Prosperity. Veses playfully accuses Ash of being difficult to reach, and their interaction is flirtatious and familiar. Veses brings up a rumor that Ash has taken a Consort, which he confirms. Veses reacts with intrigue and thinly veiled jealousy. Their exchange implies a history between them, which unsettles Sera. Ash's casual tone adds to her frustration, especially after feeling neglected by him for the past few days.

Sera's Emotional Turmoil

LocationRed Woods, House of Haides.
Overwhelmed with jealousy, frustration, and feelings of invisibility, Sera leaves the palace and wanders into the Red Woods, despite Ash’s warnings. She feels insignificant and unwanted, struggling with her inability to seduce Ash. While in the woods, Sera encounters a wounded hawk. Her powers activate unexpectedly, and she uses her gift to heal the bird. This shocks her, as she didn’t know she possessed healing abilities. She begins to wonder if her gift is evolving.

The Hunters Appear

LocationRed Woods, House of Haides.
As Sera marvels at her newfound ability, she realizes that the Rot might be affecting the Red Woods. She notices that the trees and grass resemble those infected by the Rot in her homeland of Lasania. Suddenly, she senses danger and hears twigs snapping. A group of Hunters—creatures with waxy skin and sewn-shut mouths—emerges from the shadows, signaling an immediate threat.

This chapter deepens Sera’s internal conflict as she grapples with her emotions and growing feelings for Ash, while also setting up a new external threat with the arrival of the Hunters.

Chapter 29 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera's Desperate Fight
Location: Red Woods, House of Haides. Sera encounters a group of five Hunters in the Red Woods. Hoping to avoid detection, she hides but is quickly spotted by the creatures. Armed with her shadowstone dagger, Sera engages in a fight, remembering Ash’s instruction to aim for their head or heart. Despite her courage and agility, she finds herself outnumbered and overwhelmed by the Hunters’ persistence and ferocity. During the battle, Sera is scratched by one of the Hunters, which later proves to have more severe consequences than she realizes.

Shades Emerge
Location: Red Woods, House of Haides. As Sera kills the Hunters, the ground around her erupts, and Shades—creatures resembling the undead—crawl from the earth. These Shades appear to be gods who were entombed for their crimes. They are unnervingly fast, and Sera struggles to fend them off, realizing too late that the dagger she has is not enough. Just as she is about to be overwhelmed, Ash appears, using his primal power to annihilate the Shades and save her once again.

Ash's Fury
Location: Red Woods, House of Haides. Ash is furious at Sera for disobeying his orders and entering the Red Woods. He explains that the trees are blood trees, nourished by the blood of entombed gods as a form of punishment for their crimes. Their entombment is a warning, and Sera’s presence and injury woke some of these creatures. Ash's anger is palpable as he reprimands her for endangering herself and undermining his efforts to keep her safe.

Saion's Escort and Sera's Collapse
Location: Red Woods, House of Haides. After the battle, Ash orders Saion to escort Sera back to the palace, warning her not to cause more trouble. As they walk, Sera tries to brush off her injuries, but a sudden wave of dizziness and burning pain overtakes her. Saion notices strange black lines spreading from the scratches on her arm, realizing that the Hunter’s attack has left her with a dangerous infection. Despite her attempts to downplay it, Sera collapses, and Saion's concern grows as he realizes the severity of her condition.

This chapter highlights Sera's growing independence and recklessness, as well as Ash’s increasing frustration with her disregard for his warnings. The introduction of the Shades and the ominous blood trees adds to the already dangerous atmosphere of the Shadowlands, and Sera's injury sets up a dire consequence for her actions.

Chapter 30 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera Wakes from Poisoning
Location: Sera’s bedchamber, House of Haides. Sera wakes up disoriented after being poisoned by the toxin from a Hunter's scratch. She finds herself naked under a sheet with Nektas, a draken, watching over her. He explains that the poison from the Gyrm Hunters had spread through her body and nearly killed her, but Ash used a rare antidote to save her life. Nektas reveals that the choice to save her was significant, as it would have been easier for Ash to let her die and be free from the binding deal between them. Sera grapples with the fact that Ash went to such lengths to save her.

Ash’s Intentions
Location: Sera’s bedchamber, House of Haides. Ash enters, and the tension between them builds as Sera processes everything that has happened. He admits to using compulsion to make her drink the antidote, something he dislikes doing but was necessary to save her life. The conversation turns intimate as they both reflect on their mutual attraction, with Ash confessing that he has been avoiding her because his feelings for her complicate his duties. Sera feels vulnerable as she admits to her jealousy of Veses, the Primal who had visited Ash earlier, and her frustration with feeling isolated in the palace.

An Intimate Encounter
Location: Sera’s bedchamber, House of Haides. Ash finally acts on his desire, kissing Sera with a passion that reveals the depth of his interest. The moment escalates into a more intimate encounter, where Ash asserts control, teasing Sera but stopping short of taking things further due to her physical state after the poisoning. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and both acknowledge the difficulty in resisting their attraction.

Ash’s Confession
Location: Sera’s bedchamber, House of Haides. After their intimate moment, Ash admits that his feelings for Sera are becoming harder to ignore. He returns to her bed, simply wanting to be near her, and they share a quiet moment of vulnerability. Ash confesses that he has never let himself get close to anyone before, not even Veses, and that taking this risk with Sera feels both inevitable and dangerous. Sera, in turn, opens up about her loneliness, and they find common ground in their shared isolation. The chapter ends with Ash revealing his fear that their relationship might end with them hating each other, despite the powerful connection between them.

This chapter deepens the emotional and physical connection between Sera and Ash, exploring their mutual attraction and vulnerabilities. It also emphasizes the complexity of their relationship, as both struggle with their roles in the binding deal while acknowledging their growing desire for one another.

Chapter 31 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera’s Encounter with Aios and the Draken
Location: Courtyard, House of Haides. Sera spends time with Aios and the young draken Reaver and Jadis in the courtyard. Reaver finally learns to fly, relieving some of the tension, but Sera’s mind is still occupied with the previous night, when she had fallen asleep beside Ash. She reflects on the growing connection between them and wonders if Ash had arranged for Aios to spend time with her.

Learning About Veses

Location: Courtyard, House of Haides. Sera asks Aios about Veses, and Aios confirms that the Primal of Prosperity is vindictive, particularly when she is denied something she desires. Veses has fixated on Ash because of his indifference toward her, and her obsession with him has led to tension. Aios shares that Veses wasn’t always like this; she used to be kind and generous before her long life changed her.

Bele and Rhahar Arrive

Location: Courtyard, House of Haides. Two gods, Bele and Rhahar, arrive. Bele, a sharp and striking goddess, greets Sera and speaks bluntly about the importance of earning respect from the other gods. Rhahar, who is related to Saion, comments on Sera’s fighting abilities, which impress Bele. They warn Sera that the upcoming coronation will be dangerous and that she must show no fear. The gods’ frank discussion about her status as a mortal Consort unsettles Sera.

Coronation Concerns and Training

Location: Courtyard and Sera’s Bedchamber, House of Haides. The gods speak about the attention Sera’s coronation is drawing, with some placing bets on how long she will survive as a mortal Consort. This heightens Sera’s awareness of the dangers she will face during the ceremony. Bele advises her to maintain her composure and show no fear, emphasizing the importance of respect in the Courts. This conversation adds to Sera’s growing unease about her future role.

Erlina’s Arrival and Sera’s Fitting

Location: Sera’s Bedchamber, House of Haides. Later, Erlina, a mortal seamstress from Lethe, arrives to take Sera’s measurements for her coronation gown and wardrobe. During their conversation, Sera learns that Erlina was once a Chosen who did not ascend, sparking more questions about the true fate of the Chosen.

The Truth About the Chosen

Location: Sera’s Bedchamber, House of Haides. Sera confronts Ash about what she learned from Erlina. Ash reveals the horrifying truth: the Rite of Ascension is a lie. The Chosen are not elevated to serve the gods, but rather used, abused, and often killed. No Chosen have ascended in centuries. Sera struggles to comprehend this revelation, as she had always believed the Rite was an honor. Ash explains that he has tried to save as many Chosen as possible, hiding them in the Shadowlands, but many disappear, never to be seen again.

This chapter delves deeper into the political complexities of Iliseeum and the brutal reality behind the Rite of Ascension. It also adds tension to Sera’s upcoming coronation and her growing role as Consort, while her connection with Ash continues to evolve, mixed with the weight of the truths she uncovers.

Chapter 32 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera’s Restlessness
Location: Sera’s bedchamber and balcony, House of Haides. Unable to sleep, Sera wrestles with the disturbing truths she’s learned about the Chosen and the gods. She questions whether saving Lasania from the Rot is worth it when the gods themselves commit such atrocities. Feeling overwhelmed, she seeks solace by stepping out onto the balcony.

A Midnight Conversation with Ash

Location: Balcony. Sera finds Ash outside as well, unable to sleep. Their conversation deepens as they discuss the moral complexities of Ash’s role as the Primal of Death and the burden of judging souls. Ash reveals that it’s never easy to decide who deserves punishment, as even those who commit terrible acts might not be entirely evil. Sera reflects on her own past, confessing to Ash that she has killed people, sometimes in defense, but often because they deserved it. This brings her to a place of vulnerability, as she wonders if there is something inherently wrong with her.

Ash’s Past and Sera’s Confession

Location: Balcony. Ash shares his own struggles with the decisions he’s made, including a time when he answered the summons of mortals who prayed for death. He admits that he once enjoyed the justice he dispensed, but stepped back when he realized that the deaths stopped affecting him. Sera reveals her guilt over the people she has killed, wondering if her actions were justified or if it was the result of something darker within her.

A Vulnerable Moment

Location: Balcony, Daybed. Sera’s confession leads to a tender and passionate moment between her and Ash. She kisses him, and their intimate encounter becomes one of mutual vulnerability and connection. Ash reassures her that she isn’t a monster, something Sera had long feared, and the two share an intense physical connection. Sera feels empowered by the fact that she, a mortal, can make the Primal of Death tremble with desire. This intimate moment strengthens the bond between them and brings them closer, both emotionally and physically.

This chapter is a turning point in Sera and Ash’s relationship, as they both open up about their pasts and find comfort in one another. It highlights the complexities of morality and the weight of the decisions they’ve made, while also allowing their relationship to deepen on a personal level.

Chapter 33 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera and Ash's Morning After
Location: Sera’s chambers and balcony. Sera wakes up in Ash’s arms after spending the night together, reflecting on how new and wonderful it feels to be held and wanted in such an intimate way. She realizes that something between them has shifted, becoming more than just mutual lust. However, this connection also terrifies her because she cannot afford to let herself be distracted from her duty.

Nektas' Appearance

Location: Balcony. Sera is shocked to find Nektas perched on the balcony railing. He reveals that he’s been watching over her and Ash for a while and shares how deeply Ash is sleeping—a rare occurrence for the Primal. Nektas, in a surprising move, tells Sera that she’s given Ash peace, something she finds both touching and unsettling. Sera, still conflicted, feigns sleep when Ash wakes, but he tenderly kisses her on the temple before leaving to hold court, reinforcing the growing bond between them.

Ash's Request and Sera’s Frustration

Location: Sera’s chambers. Ash asks Sera to remain hidden in her chambers while he holds court, which frustrates her as she’s tired of hiding. She questions what her purpose is if she can’t be safe here either. Their conversation ends tensely as Ash leaves with Jadis, and Sera is left feeling trapped, her conflicting emotions swirling—between her duty, her growing feelings for Ash, and the looming danger.

Exploring the Courtyard

Location: Courtyard. Sera, despite Ash’s request, is allowed to explore the courtyard with Ector’s escort. They discuss the guards and Sera’s curiosity about the Chosen, particularly Gemma, who had recently gone missing. During the walk, they are joined by the young draken Jadis and her guardian, Reaver, providing lighthearted moments. But as they reach the southern gate, a commotion breaks out, and Ector leaves Sera with a warning to stay put.

Discovering Gemma

Location: Southern Gate. Ignoring Ector’s instructions, Sera follows him and the guards to the southern gate, where she witnesses a horrific sight—Gemma, the missing Chosen, has been found gravely injured, likely by Shades. Ector and the others try to save her, but Sera can sense that Gemma is already dead. Despite the risks, Sera feels a powerful pull to use her hidden gift, something she’s kept from Ash and everyone else.

Sera's Healing Power Unleashed

Location: Healing Room. As Sera’s instincts kick in, the glowing eather of her gift flows through her hands, and she places them on Gemma. To everyone’s astonishment, Sera brings Gemma back from the brink of death, healing her completely. The room is filled with stunned silence as the draken react, sensing the energy in the air. Ash arrives and witnesses Sera’s incredible power, revealing the shocking truth: Sera carries an ember of life, a power far more potent than anyone realized.

This chapter highlights a pivotal moment in Sera’s journey, as she finally reveals the full extent of her power, something she’s kept hidden for so long. The consequences of this revelation, especially with Ash now aware, are likely to be profound as they navigate the implications of her healing abilities and her connection to the Primal of Death.

Chapter 34 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera's Healing Power and Ash's Realization
Location: Healing chamber. After Sera heals Gemma, the room is filled with disbelief and wonder. Aios confirms that Gemma is alive, and Ash commands that no one speaks of what happened. He makes it clear that anyone who disobeys will face his eternal wrath. The gods comply, but there is a palpable sense of awe and fear surrounding Sera's revealed ability.

The Ripple of Power

Location: Healing chamber. Ash explains that Sera’s healing caused a "ripple of power," strong enough to be felt throughout Iliseeum, and likely by other gods and Primals. This power could draw unwanted attention from those who see it as a threat. The danger is immediate, and Ash orders Ector to tighten security around the palace and alert them if anyone arrives from another Court. Nektas, who has just arrived with Jadis, agrees with Ash's assessment, reinforcing the idea that Sera’s abilities are extremely dangerous.

Ash’s Confrontation

Location: Healing chamber. Ash presses Sera to admit that this wasn't the first time she used her power. He reveals that he had felt this ripple of power before, at various times during their encounters, and now understands that she has been hiding it from him. The recent attack by the Hunters and the rogue gods, Cressa and the others, were likely connected to her power. They were searching for the source, not just any mortal.

Sera’s Confession

Location: Healing chamber. Sera finally admits that she had used her power before, but only once on a mortal, and usually only on animals. She explains that she was unsure of how the power worked or where it came from, which is why she had been hesitant to share it with Ash. She feared he wouldn’t appreciate her "stealing souls" from him, given that he is the Primal of Death.

The Truth About the Ember of Life

Location: Healing chamber. Ash reveals a shocking truth—Sera’s ability comes from the ember of life, which was originally possessed by his father, the true Primal of Life. Ash's father’s twin brother, Kolis, stole the power from him, becoming the false Primal of Life. This revelation explains why Sera carries this powerful, life-giving gift, and why it is so rare and dangerous.

This chapter is a major turning point, as it not only unearths Sera’s hidden abilities but also reveals crucial information about the true origins of the Primal of Life and Kolis’s betrayal. This revelation deepens the stakes, especially with the ripple of power alerting other gods and Primals. Sera now knows her power is connected to something far greater than she imagined, and the consequences of that will likely shape her fate going forward.

Chapter 35 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

The Revelation of Kolis and Eythos
Location: War Room The chapter opens with Ash and Sera moving to a war room filled with gods, including Nektas, who surprises Sera by appearing with Jadis in her mortal child form. As the group gathers, Ash reveals more about his lineage. He explains that his father, Eythos, was the true Primal of Life and his uncle, Kolis, was the Primal of Death. However, Kolis became jealous of Eythos due to the mortal realm’s love for Eythos and fear of Kolis, leading to a fateful betrayal. Kolis fell in love with a mortal, Sotoria, who died in an accident, and he begged his brother to bring her back. When Eythos refused, Kolis found a way to steal his brother’s destiny and become the Primal of Life, swapping their roles.

Kolis’s Betrayal and Its Consequences
Kolis’s betrayal had catastrophic consequences for both the mortal and godly realms, causing earthquakes, tsunamis, and the death of many gods. Despite Kolis becoming the Primal of Life, the process was unnatural, and his powers have since waned. Kolis can no longer create life, and his reign is leading to the slow destruction of everything, with death overtaking both Iliseeum and the mortal realm. This explains why no Chosen have Ascended recently and why the balance of life and death has shifted.

Sotoria's Tragic Fate

Kolis did eventually bring Sotoria back to life, but as Eythos predicted, she was not the same. To protect her from Kolis’s obsession, Eythos and the Primal Keella marked her soul for continuous rebirth, ensuring she would never enter the Shadowlands and remain out of Kolis’s reach. Despite this, Kolis still searches for her.

Ash's Heartbreaking Past

Ash shares the heartbreaking detail that Kolis murdered his mother while she was pregnant with him, out of revenge against Eythos. This revelation leaves Sera shaken, as she begins to fully understand the depth of Kolis’s cruelty and the pain Ash has endured.

The Role of Sera’s Ember of Life

The group discusses Sera’s ember of life and its significance. Aios suggests that the ember, which has been passed down through Sera’s bloodline, may have delayed the full impact of Kolis’s destructive reign. However, now that the ember is housed in a mortal body—Sera’s—the effects of the destabilized balance between life and death are becoming more apparent, with the Rot spreading across Lasania.

Sera’s Shocking Realization

Sera is horrified to realize that the Rot, which she believed was tied to the deal her ancestors made with the Primals, is not linked to the deal at all. It is a byproduct of Kolis’s actions and the absence of a true Primal of Life. This revelation shatters her belief that she could stop the Rot by fulfilling the deal and saving her people. Instead, the Rot is inevitable, and it will eventually spread throughout the entire mortal realm.

Ash Learns the Truth About Sera’s Mission

As the conversation progresses, Ash picks up on Sera’s emotional turmoil. He realizes that she has been hiding something from him—the true purpose of her mission. Sera admits that she had been trained and groomed to end the deal by making Ash fall in love with her and then killing him. The revelation sends Ash into a cold fury, as he grapples with the betrayal.

Ash’s Devastation

The atmosphere turns dark and dangerous as Ash transforms into the Primal of Death, his skin thinning and shadows forming wings behind him. Sera realizes that she might die in that moment, as Ash confronts her with the truth. However, before he can act, Nektas and Reaver intervene, reminding Ash of the value of Sera’s life. Ash pulls back, though the tension remains.

The Siege Begins

Just as the tension in the room reaches its peak, the sound of a warning horn echoes through the palace, signaling that they are under siege.

This chapter is a critical turning point in the story. Sera’s deep-seated fears and secrets come to light, creating a rift between her and Ash. The reveal that Kolis’s actions, not the deal, are the root cause of the Rot changes the entire scope of Sera’s mission, leaving her reeling from the realization that she may not be able to save her people. Meanwhile, Ash’s understanding of Sera’s true purpose leads to a devastating emotional confrontation, further complicating their relationship just as the palace comes under attack.

Chapter 36 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

The Siege Begins
Location: Shadowlands - The Bay and the Wall As Chapter 36 opens, the Shadowlands are under siege. A ripple of power has been felt, and it’s clear that something dangerous is approaching. Bele, Saion, and other gods, including Nektas, move to investigate, and there is a sense that Kolis may be behind this attack. Nektas, sensing the danger, decides to take Jadis and Reaver to safety, while Aios checks on Gemma. Tension rises as Nyktos prepares for battle, his cold demeanor towards Sera revealing his lingering anger over her betrayal.

Sera's Determination
Sera insists on helping, despite Nyktos’ disbelief. She offers her combat training as proof of her usefulness. Though Nyktos remains skeptical and angered by her past actions, he agrees to take her along, reminding her that if she does anything to jeopardize his people, the consequences will be dire.

Riding to the Bay
Sera accompanies Nyktos, Saion, Rhain, and Rhahar as they ride to the bay where the attack is unfolding. The journey is intense, with Nyktos holding Sera tightly as they navigate through misty woods and rough terrain. Sera is struck by Nyktos’ physical presence, but she struggles to keep her emotions in check, still reeling from the events in the previous chapter.

Dakkai Attack
Upon reaching the bay, they find chaos: ships have been torn apart, and the water is filled with dakkais, massive, vicious creatures drawn to eather. They are scaling the walls, attacking ships, and endangering the people in the nearby city. It becomes clear that these creatures have been sent by Kolis or one of his courts, likely the Court of Dalos, to target Sera. The situation is dire, with innocent people in danger of being overwhelmed by the dakkais.

Nyktos Leads the Defense
Nyktos and his companions leap into battle, demonstrating incredible combat skills. Sera watches as Nyktos takes down dakkais with both his sword and physical strength, while Bele, Saion, and the others use arrows and agility to fight back. Nyktos shows off his power by transforming his horse, Odin, into a shadow that wraps around his arm. This leaves Sera stunned, as she’s never seen anything like it before.

Sera Joins the Fight
Determined to help, Sera grabs a bow and arrows, using the skills she learned from Sir Holland. She successfully takes down several dakkais, but the creatures keep coming in greater numbers. As she helps the others, she senses Nyktos’ gaze on her after she saves him from being overwhelmed by a dakkai. However, there is no time for acknowledgment as more creatures swarm toward them.

A Tide of Death
The attack escalates when a wave of dakkais begins climbing the walls of the city, threatening to overwhelm the guards and reach the citizens who are trying to flee. Sera realizes that Nyktos and the others are not using their eather powers because the dakkais feed on it, and using it would only draw more of the creatures. Despite their best efforts, there are too many dakkais, and the situation becomes desperate as the creatures begin scaling the walls.

Cliffhanger
The chapter ends with Sera and the others facing a terrifying sight: a dozen dakkais scaling the city walls at an alarming speed, ready to breach their defenses. The danger is immediate, and Sera realizes that if they don’t act fast, the city and its people will be lost.

This chapter is action-packed, with a growing sense of danger as the dakkais attack the Shadowlands. Sera’s determination to help despite Nyktos’ anger shows her resilience, while the arrival of the dakkais reveals just how much danger she is in due to her connection to eather. The chapter ends on a cliffhanger, leaving readers anxious about the outcome of the battle and Sera's fate.

Chapter 37 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

The Battle Rages On
Location: The Wall of the Rise, Shadowlands Chapter 37 begins in the heat of battle. Sera is fighting for her life as she fends off dakkais climbing the Rise. Despite her bravery, the overwhelming number of creatures leaves her feeling desperate. Sera fights valiantly, using her last arrows and a dagger to kill several of the dakkais. Ector and Rhain assist, but the situation grows more dire as more dakkais swarm over the walls.

The Drakens Arrive
Just as the battle seems lost, a thunderous growl from the mist signals the arrival of Nektas and the other drakens. They swoop in, obliterating the dakkais with streams of silvery fire. The sight of the drakens’ power is both terrifying and awe-inspiring. The massive beasts rip through the enemy, but Sera remains worried about Nyktos, who she sees still fighting near the docks, surrounded by enemies.

A New Threat Appears
As the drakens finish off the dakkais, a new threat emerges—a crimson-hued draken. The crimson draken engages Orphine in an aerial battle, causing chaos as they crash into the Rise. Rhain explains that drakens are bonded to a Primal, and this one likely belongs to Kolis, the King of Gods. As the crimson draken attacks, Nektas swoops in to save the day, knocking it out of the air with a blast of silvery fire. The crimson draken eventually shifts into human form, revealing itself to be a messenger of Kolis, taunting Nyktos before being swiftly beheaded by him.

Return to the Palace
After the battle, Sera, Ector, and Rhain return to the palace. Sera chooses to stay and face Nyktos rather than hiding, knowing she must deal with the fallout of her betrayal. Nyktos returns, wounded and cold, his demeanor filled with anger and distrust. He dismisses Sera's concern and accuses her of only pretending to care about him, referencing their previous interactions on the balcony. His harsh words sting, but Sera doesn’t back down. She finally unleashes her own frustration, revealing the emotional toll of her upbringing and the guilt she feels for what she was trained to do.

Nyktos’ Injuries and Refusal to Feed
Despite the tension between them, it's clear Nyktos is severely injured from the battle. Nektas explains that Nyktos needs to feed to heal, but Nyktos refuses, haunted by his past and the times he was forced to feed until he killed. Sera, realizing the severity of the situation, offers herself to Nyktos as a means for him to feed, despite knowing the risks. Nektas believes Nyktos is angry enough at Sera to take her up on the offer, and after some hesitation, she agrees.

An Intense Confrontation
Sera finds Nyktos in his chambers, barely able to stand from his injuries. He is initially furious at her presence, warning her that if she doesn’t leave, he will feed on her and possibly kill her. However, Sera remains steadfast, challenging him and refusing to back down. Her boldness provokes Nyktos, and in a moment of primal intensity, he finally succumbs to his hunger, grabbing her and biting into her neck.

This chapter is filled with high stakes and raw emotion as Sera confronts both external and internal dangers. The battle with the dakkais and the draken shows the immense threat posed by Kolis, while the tension between Sera and Nyktos reaches a breaking point. Sera’s determination to stand her ground despite the risks reflects her complex character, torn between duty, guilt, and her growing feelings for Nyktos. The chapter ends with an intense cliffhanger as Nyktos finally feeds from her, leaving readers eager to see what will happen next.

Chapter 38 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Nyktos Feeds
Location: Nyktos' chambers The chapter opens with Nyktos feeding on Sera, his fangs piercing her neck and sending a wave of pain and overwhelming sensation through her. Initially, the bite is intense and painful, but it quickly transforms into something deeply pleasurable for Sera, awakening intense physical desire. As Nyktos continues to drink her blood, the boundary between pain and pleasure blurs, leading Sera to give in completely to her desire for him.

A Heated Encounter
Nyktos’ hunger and Sera’s desire collide in a powerful, intimate moment. Sera allows Nyktos to feed from her while he ravages her body, fulfilling his earlier promise to both feed from and be with her in a primal and raw way. Despite the tension between them, their physical connection is undeniable, and it’s clear that both are deeply affected by the experience, even as Nyktos struggles with his feelings of distrust toward Sera.

The Power of Sera’s Blood
As Nyktos continues to feed, the wounds on his body begin to heal, demonstrating the power of Sera’s blood. This miraculous healing seems to be even more effective than the ember of life, as Nyktos’ wounds close rapidly, leaving only faint scars behind. Sera is deeply affected by witnessing the effect her blood has on him, feeling both empowered and emotionally vulnerable in the process.

A Moment of Reflection
After the intense encounter, Sera and Nyktos briefly reflect on what just happened. Despite the passion between them, Nyktos remains distant and skeptical of Sera’s intentions, still haunted by her earlier betrayal. He questions how she can be so convincing in her emotions, accusing her of manipulating him as part of her seduction. Sera defends herself, insisting that her feelings are real, but Nyktos is still unsure whether to trust her, given her past plan to kill him.

A Reckless Connection
Despite his distrust, Nyktos is unable to resist his desire for Sera, and they engage in another round of intense passion. This time, Nyktos takes full control, driving Sera to submit to him completely. The dynamic between them is raw and primal, with Nyktos asserting his dominance and Sera reveling in the intensity of his actions. The physical connection between them is undeniable, but it’s clear that emotional barriers still remain.

A Changed Relationship
As the chapter ends, both Sera and Nyktos are left in a state of emotional and physical exhaustion. While their physical connection has deepened, Nyktos’ wariness of Sera’s intentions persists, and Sera is left wondering what their relationship truly means. The intense encounter between them leaves both characters changed, with Sera recognizing that neither of them will ever be the same again after what they’ve just shared.

Chapter 38 showcases the explosive chemistry between Sera and Nyktos, blending intense passion with underlying emotional tension. Despite their physical connection, Nyktos’ distrust of Sera lingers, adding complexity to their dynamic. The chapter leaves readers wondering how their relationship will evolve and whether trust can be rebuilt after such a betrayal.

Chapter 39 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera Reflects
Location: Nyktos' chambers and her own room Sera wakes alone, feeling the absence of Nyktos beside her after their intense night together. She contemplates the many layers of complexity in her life, from the impending threat to Lasania and the mortal realm, to her relationship with Nyktos. She struggles with her own emotions, realizing she desires Nyktos’ friendship, respect, and perhaps even something more, though she's unsure if either of them is capable of love.
Sera’s thoughts turn to Kolis, the Primal of Life, and the difficult choices she faces. If Kolis attacks again, her existence could either protect or hasten the destruction of the mortal realm. Sera acknowledges that there’s no easy solution, and lying in bed won’t solve her problems.

The Aftermath
Sera rises, physically tender after her night with Nyktos, and finds that he has left a robe for her—a thoughtful gesture despite their turbulent relationship. Overwhelmed by her emotions, Sera fights back tears, refusing to cry because it would solve nothing. She gathers her strength and begins her day, reflecting on her feelings of guilt and self-hatred for the betrayal she had once planned against Nyktos.
Paxton, a young servant, interrupts her thoughts by delivering hot water for a bath. Sera learns that Nyktos helped carry the pails, another sign of his unexpected kindness. Through a conversation with Paxton, she discovers more about the young boy’s life. Orphaned and living on the streets, Paxton once tried to pickpocket Nyktos, who, instead of punishing him, brought him to the Shadowlands. Sera is surprised by Nyktos’ generosity, contrasting with how mortals would have treated the boy.
Paxton tells Sera how the people in the Shadowlands admire her for her bravery during the battle, assuming she will soon be their Consort. Sera feels conflicted, knowing that the title of Consort may never truly belong to her after everything that’s happened.

Sera's Bath and Attack
Emotionally exhausted, Sera prepares for a bath, reflecting on Paxton’s words and her growing guilt. She bathes in the hot water, trying to relax and soothe her aching muscles. As she drifts into a half-asleep state, a sudden noise jolts her back to awareness. Before she can fully react, something black flashes before her eyes, and she’s attacked. A strip of material wraps around her throat, tightening as her attacker tries to strangle her.

Chapter 39 delves into Sera’s conflicted emotions and her struggle to make sense of her relationship with Nyktos. Despite her guilt and confusion, Sera continues to admire his kindness, even as she battles her own self-doubt. The chapter ends on a tense cliffhanger as Sera is ambushed while most vulnerable, leaving readers on edge about her fate.

Chapter 40 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Assassination Attempt
Location: Sera's bathing chamber Sera is viciously attacked while taking a bath. A man, later revealed to be Hamid, tries to strangle her using a sash. Sera fights back with all her strength, fueled by a mix of fear and fury. She manages to break free, striking Hamid with a piece of broken wood. The violent confrontation ends when Hamid slips, hits his head on the tub, and collapses. Shadows suddenly gather in the room as Nyktos arrives in a storm of rage and fear, his concern for Sera evident.

Aftermath of the Attack
Characters Present: Nyktos, Saion, Ector, and Rhain Nyktos helps Sera out of the bath, wrapping her in a towel. His deep concern over her well-being is clear, even though he tries to mask it. As the gods gather to investigate, Ector impulsively kills Hamid, reducing him to ash and eliminating the chance to question him about his motives. Nyktos is visibly frustrated, realizing they’ve lost an opportunity to uncover why Hamid, who had seemed loyal, turned against them.

Motives and Questions
The group debates Hamid's actions. Hamid had appeared loyal to the Shadowlands and had even hated Kolis, making his assassination attempt on Sera confusing. The group wonders if Gemma, whom Hamid visited recently, could have unintentionally revealed something that triggered Hamid to act. However, with Hamid dead, the truth remains unclear.

Sera’s Condition and New Revelation
Sera begins experiencing severe headaches and dizziness, which alarms Nyktos. He theorizes that the symptoms are linked to the Culling, the process godlings undergo as they approach Ascension. Even though Sera is not a godling, the ember of life inside her could be causing similar side effects. This explains her ongoing headaches and other symptoms she’s been experiencing for the past few years. Nyktos offers her a special tea to help ease the pain, noting that it's a rare remedy not known to mortals, raising questions about Sir Holland’s knowledge of it.

Nyktos' Cold Decision
Emotional Fallout: Sera confronts Nyktos, seeking more than just a political relationship. She admits that she had hoped for at least friendship between them, but Nyktos brutally shuts down that possibility. He states that, while he understands and respects her reasons for trying to betray him, he can never trust her. In a cold and final tone, he declares that she will be his Consort in name only, with no hope of further emotional connection or intimacy.
This chapter escalates the tension between Sera and Nyktos. Despite Nyktos' clear concern for Sera’s safety, his emotional distance is reinforced, drawing a sharp line between duty and personal connection. Meanwhile, the mystery behind Hamid's sudden betrayal deepens, leaving questions unanswered about who or what is pulling the strings behind the scenes.

Chapter 41 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Morning Reflections and Preparations
Location: Nyktos' fortress, Shadowlands The chapter begins with Sera sitting alone in her chambers the next morning, feeling a mix of sorrow and confusion. She's preoccupied with the overwhelming weight of her recent experiences, including her betrayal of Nyktos and her role in the events with Hamid. Despite everything, she still carries a small butter knife in her boot for protection, reflecting her lingering sense of unease.

Gemma’s Revelation
Characters Present: Aios, Bele, and Gemma Aios comes to Sera’s chambers, asking her to meet Gemma, who has finally awakened. Though Bele warns against letting Sera leave, Aios is determined. When they meet Gemma, she reveals that she did, in fact, die and that Sera's touch brought her back. She also admits that she told Hamid that Sera was the "presence" that Kolis had been searching for. Hamid, terrified of Kolis, believed that eliminating Sera would protect the Shadowlands.

Insight into Kolis and His "Reborn"
Gemma also shares more disturbing details about Kolis' actions. He had been experimenting on the Chosen, calling them his "Reborn" or "Revenants." These individuals were drastically changed, appearing lifeless with black, shadowstone-colored eyes. They only moved at night, and their behavior became predatory, terrifying the others in Kolis' court. Kolis believed that perfecting these Reborn required his mysterious graeca, which Gemma suggests is linked to Sera.

Fate and the Ember of Life
After learning about Kolis’ experiments and Gemma’s role in Hamid’s actions, Sera begins to realize that her connection to the ember of life might go deeper than she originally thought. She remembers a conversation with her old nursemaid, Odetta, who once told her that she was “touched by Death and Life.” Sera suspects that the Fates, or Arae, may have knowledge about her situation, and she becomes determined to tell Nyktos about both the Reborn and this potential lead.

Unexpected Arrival
Cliffhanger: As Sera, Aios, and Bele prepare to find Nyktos and inform him of their discoveries, they are interrupted by the sudden arrival of the goddess Cressa, who enters through the main doors of the fortress. Her presence creates immediate tension, suggesting that something significant is about to happen.
This chapter brings several new revelations, particularly about Kolis' twisted experiments with the Chosen and his obsession with finding the "graeca." Sera's growing understanding of the ember of life and her possible connection to the Fates adds a new layer of intrigue. However, the sudden appearance of Cressa hints at even more danger or significant developments to come.

Chapter 42 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Cressa's Arrival and Attack
Location: Nyktos' fortress, Shadowlands, throne room Cressa, dressed in a nearly translucent gown, confronts Sera, Aios, and Bele. Without warning, Cressa attacks Aios with a blast of eather, incapacitating her. Bele attempts to fight back but is quickly overpowered by Cressa, who shows surprising speed and strength. Bele is stabbed with a shadowstone dagger, which is deadly to gods, leaving her unable to heal. As Bele falls, Sera is left defenseless.

Madis and Taric Join the Battle
Characters: Madis, Taric, Cressa Madis and Taric join Cressa in the attack. Taric, a golden-haired god, is intrigued by Sera. After some taunting and a brief skirmish, Sera tries to defend herself with a butter knife, but it breaks against Taric’s chest, highlighting her helplessness against these powerful gods. The trio mocks her resistance but doesn’t kill her, hinting that they need her alive for something important.

Taric’s Bite and Mind Assault
Event: Taric bites Sera, feeding from the same spot Nyktos had previously bitten her. Unlike Nyktos’ bite, this one brings immense pain and agony. As he drains her blood, Taric mentally invades Sera’s thoughts, searching her memories. The experience is excruciating, causing Sera to panic as she struggles against him. The pain is so overwhelming that Sera realizes for the first time how terrifying true fear can be.

Nyktos’ Arrival
Cliffhanger: Just as Taric confirms that Sera is the one they’ve been searching for, the room begins to vibrate with an ominous energy. The air fills with the scent of Nyktos, signaling his return. A powerful gust of wind and the roar of a draken herald his arrival. Nyktos appears in his true Primal form, more terrifying and beautiful than Sera has ever seen him. His skin is midnight black streaked with eather, and his wings are solid arcs of silver and shadow. He hovers in the air, commanding the gods to kneel before him, radiating an overwhelming aura of power.

This chapter is intense, with Sera facing off against three powerful gods and enduring immense pain and mental invasion from Taric. Despite her resilience, it becomes clear that Sera is in grave danger, and her connection to Kolis and the ember of life makes her a target. Nyktos' dramatic arrival at the end promises a fierce confrontation, as he unleashes his full power to protect Sera.

Chapter 43 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Nyktos' Wrath
Location: Nyktos' fortress, Shadowlands, throne room Nyktos arrives in his terrifying Primal form, immediately demanding submission from the three gods who attacked Sera, Bele, and Aios. Cressa and the others drop to one knee, acknowledging Nyktos’ overwhelming power. Despite their excuses, Nyktos is furious that they dared to touch what is his—Sera. With a mere thought, Nyktos shatters Cressa’s body into dust, and Nektas, the draken, eliminates Madis with a blast of silver fire.

Taric’s Defiance
Character: Taric, the last of the attacking gods, refuses to back down and forms a weapon made of eather. However, Nyktos swiftly disarms him, reminding Taric that using eather against him is futile. When Taric mocks Nyktos, telling him that Kolis will stop at nothing to get Sera, Nyktos gruesomely punishes him by causing his eyes to melt and ultimately kills him by tearing through his chest.

Sera's Reaction and Nyktos' Comfort
Emotional Scene: After Taric’s brutal death, Nyktos turns to Sera, kneeling before her. He reassures her that he will never hurt her, despite the fear and trauma she experienced when Taric forcibly invaded her memories. Sera admits to being terrified, but Nyktos reminds her that while she may feel fear, she is never truly afraid. In a poignant moment, Nyktos returns the shadowstone dagger to Sera, symbolizing that he understands how much she needs it for comfort and control.

Bele’s Death and Resurrection
Critical Moment: When Sera looks over at Bele, she realizes the goddess is dying from the shadowstone dagger wound. Despite Nyktos telling her that an ember of life wouldn’t be enough to save a god, Sera insists on trying. With Aios’ encouragement, Sera channels the ember’s power into Bele. At first, nothing happens, but then a massive shockwave of power ripples through the room, accompanied by a bolt of lightning in the sky. Bele awakens, breathing again—miraculously brought back to life.

The Revelation
Plot Twist: Not only has Sera brought Bele back to life, but Nyktos realizes that Sera has also Ascended Bele, something that should be impossible with just the ember of life. This revelation leaves everyone, including Nyktos, in awe of the true extent of Sera’s power.

This chapter is a turning point for Sera’s abilities, showcasing her extraordinary power. Nyktos’ protection of Sera, as well as his vulnerability when she tries to save Bele, deepens their bond. The unexpected Ascension of Bele reveals that Sera is far more powerful than anyone realized, hinting at even greater implications for her connection to the ember of life and Nyktos’ father’s plans.

Chapter 44 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera Reflects in Nyktos’ Office
Location: Nyktos’ office, Shadowlands Sera is in Nyktos' office, reflecting on the events that led her to Ascend Bele, a feat that should have been impossible. She’s still trying to understand the full implications of what happened and wonders why Ector and Saion seem so unsettled by her powers. Saion explains that Ascending a god is a significant transition, but Sera doesn’t fully grasp how profound her action was.

The Mystery of Bele’s Ascension
Discussion: Nyktos joins the conversation, confirming that Bele’s Ascension could challenge the authority of other Primals, particularly Hanan, the Primal of the Hunt and Divine Justice. This Ascension has likely caused ripples in the power dynamics between the gods, leaving Kolis and the other Primals feeling threatened and confused. The possibility of Bele becoming more powerful than a typical god leaves everyone on edge.

The Viktor Revelation
Important Information: Nyktos and Saion discuss the viktors—a group of beings neither mortal nor god, who are eternal and reborn to serve a purpose. Viktors are guardians of those destined for great change, and Sera learns that the viktors might have been protecting her. This revelation leads Sera to suspect that Sir Holland, the one who trained and protected her, might have been one of these viktors.

The Fates Are Summoned
Plot Development: Nyktos reveals that he has summoned the Fates (Arae) to see if they can provide answers. Though Primals cannot command the Arae, he hopes they will come of their own will. As they wait, Sera tries to make sense of everything, admitting she doesn’t want to be alone in her chambers with so many thoughts swirling in her head. She falls asleep beside Nyktos, feeling both comforted and confused by her connection with him.

A Tense and Surprising Kiss
Emotional Shift: After waking, Nyktos, perhaps overwhelmed by emotions, kisses Sera passionately, but then quickly pulls away, stating that it changes nothing. Despite the kiss, he insists that their relationship remains the same, a fact that leaves Sera both shaken and slightly hopeful.

Meeting the Fates
New Characters: As Sera and Nyktos head to the throne room to meet the Fates, they encounter Penellaphe, an ethereal goddess who is aware of Sera’s identity. Penellaphe directs them to meet one of the Arae, who is waiting inside for them. Nyktos and Sera prepare to meet the Fate, unsure of what answers they will receive.

The Shocking Appearance of Sir Holland
Cliffhanger: Entering the chamber, Sera is stunned to see someone she never expected—Sir Holland, her former protector and trainer, standing before the dais. This revelation leaves Sera speechless, as the implications of his presence in the Shadowlands suggest a deeper connection to the viktors and her own destiny.

This chapter deepens the mystery surrounding Sera’s power and connections to both the viktors and the Fates. Nyktos' relationship with Sera takes a complicated turn with his passionate but regretful kiss, and the appearance of Sir Holland at the end raises even more questions about her past and future. The involvement of the Fates suggests that more answers about Sera’s destiny are about to be revealed.

Chapter 45 Recap - A Shadow in the Ember

Sera Discovers Sir Holland’s True Identity
Revelation: Sera is shocked to find Sir Holland, her trusted mentor, revealed to be one of the Arae, a Spirit of Fate, who had been masquerading as a mortal for most of her life. He trained her, but under strict guidelines, never fully able to tell her the truth of her destiny. His unwavering belief in her over the years now makes sense, but the realization still leaves Sera grappling with feelings of betrayal and confusion.

Nyktos’ Realization of His Father’s Plan
Important Information: Nyktos connects the dots, realizing that the prophecy surrounding Sera’s birth and Holland’s role had been part of a grander plan set in motion by his father, Eythos, the true Primal of Life. Holland explains that Eythos had embedded an ember of life within Sera’s bloodline, taken from both Eythos himself and Nyktos before Nyktos underwent the Culling. This ember was hidden in Sera’s bloodline to protect it from Kolis, who would have seen Nyktos as a greater threat if he had retained the ember.

Sera’s Connection to Nyktos
Emotional Revelation: Both Sera and Nyktos admit that they felt a strange sense of rightness and warmth around each other from their very first meeting. Penellaphe, another Spirit of Fate, explains that this could be because of the essence of life Sera carries from Nyktos’ father and Nyktos himself. This shared power connects their souls in a way that feels like they were meant to find each other.

Prophecy and Fate
The Prophecy: Penellaphe shares a prophecy that she once had, which involves a Queen of Flesh and Fire and a King risen from Blood and Ash, who will rule side by side and bring hope to both mortals and gods. This cryptic message seems to point to Sera and Nyktos, although the details are still unclear. Penellaphe also hints at the destruction that Kolis might bring, confirming that Sera’s role in this prophecy is critical to the survival of both realms.

The Culling Threatens Sera’s Life
Plot Development: Holland reveals that because Sera carries Nyktos’ blood (from when she accidentally ingested it), she is destined to undergo the Culling, a transformation that only godlings and those with divine power can survive. As a mortal, Sera is not physically equipped to survive the Culling, and her body will likely fail. The only way she could live through this process is with the love of a Primal who shares the ember of life she carries.

Nyktos and Sera’s Love as a Solution
Emotional Tension: Holland and Penellaphe explain that the one unpredictable force that can change fate is love. To survive the Culling, Sera would need the love of a Primal—specifically Nyktos. However, both Sera and Nyktos know that Nyktos has said he is incapable of love. This realization leaves them both devastated, as Sera is resigned to the fact that she will die unless Nyktos can somehow love her.

Sera is the Primal of Life
Shocking Conclusion: As Holland and Penellaphe explain more of the prophecy, it becomes clear that Sera is not just any mortal carrying the ember of life—she is the Primal of Life. Her bloodline has kept the ember of life alive, and if she dies, all life across both realms will cease. Nyktos is overwhelmed by this revelation, realizing that Sera is the heir to all realms, lands, seas, and skies. She is the embodiment of life itself.

This chapter is a major turning point in the story, revealing Sera's true identity as the Primal of Life and the immense power and responsibility she holds. The prophecy ties Sera and Nyktos together, but the emotional stakes rise as it becomes clear that their survival depends on love—a force that Nyktos has claimed he is incapable of. This creates an intense emotional and existential dilemma for both characters as they face not only their destiny but also the potential end of all life if they fail.
